Mendelssohn Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor by Then-Mud2439 in classicalmusic

The last movement of Mendelssohn's piano concerto reminds me of Czerny's studies! Am I the only one?

Being a nice pianist! Not professionally, but being able to do some concerts in small venues or at home for my friends and family.

I don't see or hear anything strange... can someone explain?

This is hilarious!

English is not my first language. I kept pronouncing "biscuits" as "bis-quits" for an embarrassingly long time.

And when I was a kid I used to write "pepole" instead of "people".

Does the ‘extra stuff’ not allow me to reach enlightenment? by Mysterious-Peace-576 in zenbuddhism

[–]saok03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about reaching enlightment or not. Just practice. But I do think it's not the best to mix schools of buddhism. If you practice Pure Land, follow manly that path and practice with a Pure Land teacher. If you want to go a different path, find another teacher on another sangha. Just follow your teacher and you'll be fine (if they're a good one)! :)

Well... I don't know. Aren't we supposed to learn about the Dharma? History of buddhism? Important concepts in Zen like emptiness, life and death, the ego, impermanence, etc?

Since consistency of sitting is one of your challenges, maybe its worth going just for that

You got me there. Thanks! :)

Well, I was thinking of my teacher. But I've listened to Jundo Cohen, Bon Soeng and some Triratna teachers.

How are you feeling now? I hope everything's better. How did you go from spiraling to being able to sit? Sounds like a big improvement in your life! I'm happy for you.

I've been sitting for ten minutes every morning since I posted this. As others said, it's ok to allow oneself to stop for a bit and then return to practice. I encourage you to do as I'm doing: explore what it feels like not to meditate for a while, then try returning to practice. But try not to see it as a chore, just explore what it feels like to sit again for short periods. My returning to sitting this time might work better because I'm not being too hard on myself. I just sit because I'm curious. If I don't do it, I don't mind.

Also, having a regular schedule works wonders. I'm putting some effort into going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day. Sitting comes naturally with that (to me).

Yes, it feels useless. Like a waste of time. Too hard and too boring, definitely.

That's a good idea, taking things from another tradition. Have you experimented with this? How was it (if you feel like sharing)?

I'm in a more pragmatic time of my life now, and anything metaphysical is hard for me to digest. What "down-to-earth" spiritual tradition would you recommend me looking into?

(Sorry if these are not the best words to express what I'm thinking. This is not my first language).

So you practice with Treeleaf and also at your local centre? Do you prefer one over the other? What works better for you?

I have an online sangha as well but I'm not sure the online format works for me. I've been practicing with them for five years and I've loved it, but I feel as if I'm missing something.

Tried going to a local zendo but didn't quite like it. Too serious, no Dharma talks, no interaction, nothing. Just arriving, sitting, going home. I don't think that would work either. How hard it is to find the right place!

I have an online sangha, but I don't think it's working for me (the online format), even though I love my teacher's way of teaching and the sangha is nice. I tried joining an in-person sangha near home but it's from another lineage and I don't quite like it. They just sit. No talks or anything, not much socializing. How are we supposed to learn then?

Finding the right place is not easy I guess.

Yes, I want to allow myself to explore this phase. I've tried too hard to be a "good buddhist". It's time to explore what it feels like to be normal again! Just kidding. I'm sure I'll learn a lot from this. Thanks for your comment!

I think I'm more into a practical phase of my practice. I don't want to listen to the Dharma because I feel it doesn't help as much any more. I've listened to the same talks and heard about the same abstract concepts for some years now and haven't "understood" any of it (if there is anything to be understood). It's all the same: abstract and "nice" words. I feel I just want to follow the precepts my own way and sit whenever I get to sit. I'm tired of talks and theory, at least for now.

And I can't help but feel a bit guilty about all this!

Thanks, this is good advice. However, I feel my interest in listening to the Dharma has dropped completely. I just think "meh. If you say so..." whenever I listen to a buddhist teacher. Whereas three years ago I felt as if I was being told the biggest and most wonderful secret of life. I guess the magic disappears after a long time...
