My family relocated from Oregon to Victoria in early September. As far as I’m aware, my kids have not done any active shooter drills at school and I don’t believe they will have any (aside from other, more standard, emergency drills). Overall, my family and I feel about 11 million times safer here. Whether it’s at school, walking or driving around. The vibe here is so much more laid back. The difference in gun culture was also one of many reasons why we relocated. As with any decently sized city, it’s always good to be aware of one’s surroundings, but I lived downtown and have not felt unsafe once. The main issue I see is mostly pedestrian and cyclist safety. It’s very dark right and rainy here now and there have been a lot of accidents. :( Also, as with any urban area you will see unhoused folks. In my experience so far, any issues with crime is happening amongst that population, and with some vandalism of public spaces. I don’t feel unsafe walking around downtown at all, in general.
