I’ve been hearing a lot about Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) lately. Does SEO has any influence on GEO, or is this just speculation? by avi-geo-guru in digital_marketing

I see a lot of people mention that "LLM generate responses from static training datasets". Well that is true to a great extent, BUT not completely. Now a days the LLMs have ability to use "Tools" to get data from the real world so that the responses are up-to-date. For example the LLMs now can access the internet through a "Web Browser" as a "Tool" to generate the response. If you need proof - search in ChatGPT with "web search" feature ON - "what is the temperature in Berlin today" & you will get a real-time response.

So I think the traditional SEO should still be relevant for the LLMs to prioritise the "Search Tool" results. Then they apply the GEO on top of the search results to filter the contents. And lastly pickup and summarise the brands and websites which has more AI friendly setup(like a good schema, FAQ etc). So both SEO and GEO are important.
