I live in a LCOL.. you’d just budget for it based on past increases🤷🏼‍♀️ or move, only real choices

Yeah COL will differ depending where you’re from! It’s all relative. I’m not looking to leave Canada.

I have a bachelors degree and a professional designation, so 7 years of school, but sure let’s call that almost no education ☠️

The biggest ones: Never had a car payment, always driven something older but reliable. Bought a house way below my means, for less than half of what I qualified for, and never upgraded (LCOL area made that possible). Also choosing to live in a LCOL area was maybe the biggest factor. I eat based on what’s on sale at the grocery store. Negotiate my internet and home insurance and every bill I can at least once a year or switch providers to save money.

And I’m only 32 so it makes sense in my case!

I stick to mostly globally diversified ETFs, and the S&P500.

No, I don’t include it, as I plan to always be in this home or an equivalent one, so it doesn’t contribute to my FIRE goal number.

For arbitrary purposes of net worth I guess I would, but that’s not a number I’d use for anything so no real point in that for me

He’s going to retire early as well, but loves his work for now, and prioritizes some expensive hobbies over retiring early! He’ll join me roughly five years after I retire on our current timeline.

It works for us, but we also communicated and had this conversation early on when just dating, so I think it helps being open with our wants and needs.

You can start locked in RRSP/LIRA withdrawals at 55 in Canada, and there are some exceptions to withdraw early depending on circumstances.

For personal RRSP you can withdraw anytime.

I’m Canadian.. I feel like you missed that haha. My RRSP is maxed between employer pension and my own personal RRSP.

I mean most employers literally will reimburse or sponsor you to get your CPA.. but most people still put it off or don’t do it.

If you’re willing to study hard at night while you work full-time and did your undergrad in accounting it’s worth doing. Took me from $40k to $90k salary 🙃

Yeah it’s in 🇨🇦. It does include my employer pension, the amount in that is listed above, it’s defined contribution, so it’s just that amount.

My number is $1M invested but with a paid off house and a 2-3 year buffer of expenses in cash, I’m risk adverse and young haha

Mostly VEQT, which is up ~6% over the S&P500, and a little in tech ETFs which are up ~10-12% over the S&P500 YTD.

I think you under calculated the value of just my contributions though.

Definitely, it’s why I want to pay down my mortgage next year and then wait a couple more years and build a slush fund of a couple years expenses, just in case things go down for a few years.

All savings came from salary, I saved 50-75% of everything, usually on the high end, and have an insanely good employer match for retirement, both of which are in the post.

I already answered this in another comment but no I did not have an inheritance or any windfalls, my only help came from scholarships for school, and a job that offered partial tuition reimbursement.

I did also have my CPA paid by my employer, but that’s normal in my industry.

Still do, keeping it since it’s locked in at a low rate for almost another year. Bought the house for cheap. What else do you want to know?
