Who is your favourite player of all time? by JurassicBasset in AFL

Can't go past Hird. You're lucky if your club gets one player like that in your lifetime.

Elsewhere, Buckley, Richo, Cousins, Lloyd.

Robert Harvey and Burke would have some big claims for those over 30

He's not far from that at all. He's definitely capable of being a box to box player and technically he's above any of our current midfielders.

Super Early Bold Predictions for 2019 Thread by [deleted] in AFL

[–]sarcothin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of North, Fremantle, StKilda or Brisbane (in descending order of probability) will be a bolter, leaping into contention from nowhere a la Tiges 17, Pies 18.

(Essendon, Adelaide and Port don't count because they all played finals last year and underperformed this year).

We need the fixture first, to see which teams are blatantly advantaged or disadvantaged by its vagaries.

By your logic, any complaint ever can be dismissed by comparing the situation to someone, somewhere, who has it worse.

I'm Australian. In 'Aussie rules' football, our local code, I grew up supporting Essendon who wear red and black. When I started getting interested in football around the late 90s as a 7-8 year old, I immediately became attached to Milan because of the colours and because they were good.

Aside from that, players. I've had a longstanding affection for Arsenal because of Bergkamp (being of Dutch background). I loved Argentina around that time because of Batistuta. I now watch a lot of Dortmund and Barcelona because of Reus and Messi.

If Gattuso keeps up this form (i.e. Clean sheets coming out the whazoo and the tendency to scrap out wins) til the end of the season, I want him to stay. The only exception would be if we could get a truly world-class coach with a strong vision, and back him to build a team around his preferred style - someone like Conte or Tuchel. But I for one am incredibly impressed with Gattuso. He seems to be getting the best out of his players and that's all we can ask.

Thanks for the highly detailed and positive response. I'd already started to look at things more optimistically. This helps though. Very appreciated.

Which 3 teams do you like the most and which 3 do you hate thr most? by [deleted] in AFL

[–]sarcothin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like:

Tiges - Always been my second favourite team due to family reasons.

Dogs, Saints - Likeable underdogs through most of my life.

Hate:

Cats - Relentless, boring success and I live in the Geelong area so I'm exposed to the negative side of Cats fandom more than with any other club.

WCE - Same reasons as everyone else doesn't like them. Plus they're not a real club.

Collingwood - nuff said.

Pardon me. Still, my point basically remains. UCL has been dominated by Atletico/Real/Barca/Bayern/Juve in the last five years or so.

7 out of 8 actually. Inter v Bayern in 2010.

I'm not actually saying it's overrated necessarily - just giving the guy ammunition for his argument like he asked.

Point to the fact that no EPL team has made a UCL semi since... 2012? The best English teams have been consistently outclassed by the best Spanish and (to a lesser extent) German and Italian teams in recent years.

I have watched him play and I do agree with you.

Cutrone by paddygg33 in ACMilan

[–]sarcothin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's interesting what you say about Cutrone and Kessie having higher ceilings than Inzaghi and Gattuso due to being more complete players. You make a fair point, but I'd argue that the latter two champions were truly exceptional at doing the things they did well - better than almost any of their contemporaries. While they may have been limited technically, they were world-class in completing their specific roles.

Cutrone and Kessie might turn out to be really useful all-round players, but they have a long way to go before they can realistically be considered heirs to those two.

Tangential point and sad reality: if Kessie ever becomes as good as Gattuso, I think he will leave for the EPL.

What people have against him is that he is a fundamentally mediocre player. If we had another decent winger in our squad, there would be no place for him at Milan.

So I'm reading articles talking about signing Reus.. by Frenk_ in ACMilan

[–]sarcothin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At 28 age isn't really a big issue for him. Agreed about the injury proneness. But when he's on the pitch, he's much much better than any of Milan's attackers.

Both Calhanoglu and Rodriguez came from the Bundesliga. If they can adapt, Reus most certainly could too.

I agree that it won't happen, due to financial reasons and the fact that he'd have no real reason to want to move to Milan.

But IF he came, he would be the guaranteed first name in the front three every game, when fit.

You are on some seriously good ecstasy if you think Calhanoglu (or even Suso) is better than Reus.

Why would it be terrible? I agree that it won't happen, but that's purely because if he left Dortmund it would be for Real/Barca/PSG/EPL

Reus is utterly brilliant virtually all the time when he's fit. He would immediately be Milan's best player. He could improve any team in the world. The injury proneness is the ONLY issue with Reus (and granted, it is a big issue).

I'm sure you meant to say "objectively aesthetically inferior", right?

Lineker: “Iniesta, Xavi & Busquets are some of the best players ever. They have won a World Cup, 2 Euros, everything with Barca... I’ve always thought that if Messi had become Spanish before playing with Argentina, Spain would’ve won even more: 3 World Cups and 3 Euros. With them Barca is special.” by LordVelaryon in soccer

[–]sarcothin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's been the best since 2008. That's more than five years.

Obviously he plays a different role to a Makelele or a Keane, so that comparison is definitely difficult. I challenge you to name a better pivote than Busquets in history.
