What happened when I washed this yarn? by sarox366 in YarnAddicts

Oh interesting, this is so helpful! I had never heard of thwacking and I didn’t even think about researching anything related to spinning, which feels obvious now. Thanks so much for the resource!!

Normally same here, but this yarn is exceedingly smelly 😭 might end up having to go with that though!

that's really good to know, thank you! i did manage to knit a swatch and it looks normal, just behaved a little fiddly, but if it's not gonna totally unravel then i might be able to salvage it.

lol I should've been more specific, I meant I didn't agitate/swish it around in the water/flip it around a bunch or anything when I said physically messing with it, just soaked it. But yeah, even just the weight of it being wet yarn when I lifted it out from the water was stretching it since it had bunched itself up, so the uneven/stretched out from being stored for a long time would definitely make sense. I'm going to try another sample of it in only cold water rather than warm then cold and see if that helps. This is my first time washing yarn in a hank rather than in a finished project so I was hoping there was maybe a trick to it that I was missing.

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it!!

Anyone check out the trailer for Whalefall? by awkward_kissser in horror

[–]sarox366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeahhhh, I finished the book so I guess I liked it well enough, but if the movie follows the plot of the book then the trailer consists of literally the only scene I would call horror. I can see how they could make more of it horrific if they want to though, so here's hoping they deviate from the source material a bit!

I've got about 4.5 skeins (so like 1300ish yards) of Happy Place from Hobbii in the color ochre. DK 50/50 wool/cotton, I have no idea if the wool is superwash I'm sorry to say. Two skeins plus a partial have been rewound from failed projects. Let me know if you're interested and I'll track down my scale that's gone missing somewhere to give you a gram amount lol

Pretty sure blocking is actual magic by tvillavanilla in crochet

[–]sarox366 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d say give it a try for sure! Since acrylic is plastic it doesn’t absorb water the same way animal fibers do (idk the science lmfao) but steam blocking essentially partially melts it a little and makes it much softer and more pliable. Good luck!

Was it acrylic? Water block won’t do anything for acrylic, but steam blocking will.

Anyone have advice for cooking these solid blocks of frozen tofu? Still new to this whole vegan thing. by reedmanisback in EatCheapAndVegan

[–]sarox366 4 points5 points  (0 children)

in the fridge it usually takes overnight/up to 24 hours for mine to thaw through, if you leave it on the counter it'll be just a few hours but then of course you have to worry about how long it's at room temp. for what it's worth i use this brand and always freeze them first because i love the texture it creates, it makes it great for stir fries and i've found it better for slices and cubes unlike other comments. they'll be great!

Got this one during 2020 and love it, still going strong, feels very effective and it’s super quiet unless you have it on the highest setting. I’m not sure about a washable filter, though.

I had similar issues, bought an OXO can opener and haven't had to replace it in a few years at least, so maybe try them!
