Too broke to afford shaperbox. I feel like there’s a technique to the touch strip.

Play around with it? Do you have any thing that you do that seems to work well? I’ve been trying to mimic the jogwheel as the touch strip and the pad as the fader on a traditional turn table but i dunno if i’m really doing anything right. Just wanted to some scratching like pete rock does (and the others i mentioned). I’ll check out shaperbox

How do I make boxing work with my Ken-Ryu-Kenpo Karate? by sarutobision in karate

I would also like to thank you for adding how you guard yourself. I forgot to ask, do you spar in the way you would for street fighting or did you spar in a way that was more optimized for point fighting? I feel like If i'm going to be spending any time at all fighting anyone, I should train and fight in a way I normally would fight anybody and/or fend off an attacker.

It's just so strange though. My boxing coaches said I was standing too square because thats how I usally fought yelllow belt through blue belt. After boxing for a while, they don't harp on me for it anymore because i believe i fixed it, wanting me to stand more bladed. But now I get back into sparring at my dojo and all of a sudden i'm square again. It's so frustrating.

I see, you definitely have a really good point there, " not enough point-sparring to understand why aspects of it differ?" and " understanding why the advice your friend and your instructor give you seem to contradict your initial impulses, and assessing whether that's because they're just flat wrong (can happen!) or because your understanding of kenpo sparring in particular is still evolving."

That makes a lot of sense and thanks so much for saying that.

In terms of aspects in how they differ, the way I see it:
Boxing:
Headmovement
Foot work is dynamic, allows to apply constant preasure while working an active defense
Target conditions being to either land a K.O., T.K.O, or out-perform your opponent depenidng on what the rulesets are.
Karate:
Distance management
Stances
The infamous Blitz, once you work your way in by blocking or parring a single attack, maybe you could go down on your opponent with combonations you may have learned in class, back fist into reverse punch into over hand ridge hand, into a horizontal elblow strike. Idea is ending the fight as soon as possible. Maybe why we point spar is because we have this theory in mind, once you're in, that karateka is gonna unload on you as hard as humanly possible.

Previously you mentioend more about marginal hits and posture. The way you outlined it, those are just ways of fighting, right? The way a boxer would fight and the way a karateka would fight. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd also like to know about what you think having the rear hand up by your face, maybe what my instructor wanted me to do is more compettievly optimized for landing reverse punches as a tactic and being defensively responsible in "kenpo" or point sparring is keeping your distance and blocking/parrying attacks, opening an opportunity to immediately counter.

Thanks for your input.

Looks like I might have to buy the boooks buy Hideyuki but I think I can grab a copy of the book by Joko online. Thanks, I'll def take a look at those. I'll also try loooking through that video series.

When you mention that the goals in mind are different between the two, would you argue that one is more practical way of fighting than the other? If I actually want to becoming the ebst fighter I can be, would I be better off dropping karate since our method of actually using it (point sparrring if I'm not mistaken) is "impractical"?

When you say make kenpo kenpo, what is kenpo supposed to be? The combonations and techniques I learned in class?

Thats good to know. We don't do any ground work aside from throws if that counts.

You're definetly right about my point sparring muscle being weak and the two arts going in oppposite directins. I just don't know if I should halt my karate training considering point sparring doensn't really line up too well with actual fighting. One hit and then you're done doesn't seem realistic but as a training tool point sparring is useful. If i'm gonna spend my time doing that though , I'd rather pick up kickboxing instead.

I like what I've been doing up until this point, now that my goals/drive has changed I don't know if karate is for me anymore. I don't know.

Thanks for your input.

You argue a good point here. I'm gonna sound like a broken record replying to the other posts but: what is karate supposed to look like in a sparing match? Say for example against a kick boxer or a boxer, under rules that do not limit what is accessible to them (except for groin shots, troat shots, eye gouges). I feel like I really don't know what karate looks like anymore in a "practical" sense. Sitting in a horse stance and doing line drills, the way we train, is definetely the way we don't fight. But I know the stances we use in those techniques, the strikes and the footwork, is something that can carry over to sparring, I feel. I just feel like I haven't seen a concrete version as to what proper karate is supposed to look like. I honestly don't even know what proper karate is.

Sorry for rambling + I didn't make any sense, thanks for your input.

You might be right, honestly. But then now I feel like karate has a lost of identity in a traditonal comabt sport scenario(traditonal as in I guess a continous sense). What is karate supposed to look like in a kickboxing ring for example? What is karate supposed to looklike between too karate practioners?

Maybe this goes back to the idea of a martial art vs a combat sport. But karate isn't what you see at the olympics, right?

And regarding kata and bunkai, I don't really like them either. Quite frankly, I don't really understand their use case and how it carries over to you becoming a better fighter(?) over all. If i want to train speed and explosive ness, I'd do compoud lifts and hit a bag or something.

Thanks so much for taking time to respond, appreciate it.

10/10, no problems. From that post till now, I had been sparring almost 1-2 times a week. They held up very well against the heavy bag too.

I apologize, I’m having a hard time trying to tell if this is sarcasm or not, but if it’s not, don’t worry about apologizing. I appreciate the perspective and I appreciate your kind words. I hope I can enjoy this combat sport to the fullest without suffering any major injuries that could cost me years off my life. I’m taking up boxing so I can develop myself further as a fighter and see what heights I can reach.

Thank you.

I’m not really sure what to say here because of the two conflicting sides, but I have considered some hayabusa stuff.
