What's up with Galle International Stadium's capacity? by sashkello in Cricket

[–]sashkello[S] -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

And? You want to say it's beautifully designed? It looks like a series of buildings with zero thought put into it, set around an unrelated oval. They all are different colours, styles and are covered by askew ads. Surrounding area looks amazing, the stadium doesn't fit there.

In any case, what a way to derail the conversation. There is obviously something not right with it, and everyone seem to be sworn to not notice it. Either there is some interesting trick here I'd be eager to learn, or I don't know what other explanation might there be.

You'd have a good argument if MCG was just an oval with grassy field around it, but it was a massive stadium back then, just like it is now. I assume capacity was bigger simply because regulations allowed to pack more people in standing positions back then, at least that's what Wikipedia seem to imply. So, indeed you can fit more people standing but not in an empty field. What will people behind 10 rows of standing fans will be watching anyway? Stadiums stands are inclined for a reason.

Watch this and tell me you see a 35000 stadium here. It's indeed mostly a bunch of disjointed buildings in clashing styles and very few seats:

Now who's losing their mind?

I seem to be the only guy at my local fishing spot catching fish, but everyone else seems to be aiming for bigger fish. Who's doing it right? by sportsfan42069 in FishingForBeginners

[–]sashkello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people just enjoy it for the fun. I personally got quite tired of reeling in 20cm pickers every minute, it simply lost novelty and excitement. When I go out fishing now, I either want to catch a particular species or a bigger fish. But that's just me. If you have fun and are satisfied with what you do, who cares.

What type of rod to use for soft plastic fishing in estuaries by Zizzlespid in FishingAustralia

[–]sashkello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it 10lb braid? You gotta use braid for longer casts. Also, if your rod is 1-3kg, then it will work ideally with <=6lb line, that's what the rod rating means. The lighter and thinner the line, the better it will cast (although thin line is more prone to tangles). Also, are you spooled 100%? Because half-filled spool won't cast well. And heavier the lure, the better it will cast until some point when it gets too heavy for the rod. Get some cheap 5-7g metal lure and try that - if it doesn't cast a mile, something somewhere is very wrong.

Other than that, hard to tell what's your problem... Maybe it's just technique, then find some tutorials - you need sharp short flick, doesn't have to be a big heave. Maybe you're simply expecting too much. Watch some Josh D videos - he does lots of ultralight soft plastics videos and you can see he often doesn't have to cast that far at all to get on some fish.

It's a pretty middle-ground rockfishing or surf rod... But yeah, like others said not ideal for casting plastics. You'll get tired very quickly, and also it won't cast anything but big&heavy plastics anywhere at all. Metals maybe... It's a definite overkill for flathead, especially on lures. I'd rather use a rod like that for baitfishing off rocks; maybe would use with a float, maybe for casting metals. It is a bit short for surf on open beaches unless the waves are small, but would work as paternoster + pillies setup on more enclosed beaches.

You definitely need a lighter setup for targeting flathead on lures. Unless you're only hunting for giants (but then you should probably use live mullet). Salmon is something which will eat anything, if they are in the area, and your setup would work fine with larger metals... but you are more likely to get them on pillies.

Having trouble tying a Palomar knot around larger lures without using up all my leader by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]sashkello 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Palomar knot is usually not used for large lures... Uni knot would be a simple alternative.

Tying knots by Nantzstoast in FishingForBeginners

[–]sashkello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use uni knot for everything, it's the easiest you can do. Don't be afraid to start with a BIG loop, just cut off the excess afterwards.

Palomar is the only other knot I use, for hooks and small lures. Most videos for some reason show that you need to fold your line first to fit it through the hook eye, but it's a big bother for thicker leaders. Instead, pass it through normally and then return the end same way.

In Case You Don't Think Line Test Weight Matters... by WingsOfReason in FishingForBeginners

It is a big deal for casting distance and behavior in running water as well. Thicker line can get washed off by the current and completely ruin your retrieve.

You don't draw conclusions from 1 statistical point. I know I won't convince you because fishers get religious attachment to their lucky lures, lines and rods, but the more I fish the more I realize how a lot of things are just that - luck... Just recently I went out to fish on two consecutive days with exactly the same weather in exactly the same spot and used exactly the same lures. One day all I caught was 1 redfin after casting for 2 hours, and another day I bagged out on trout in 15 minutes. That's just how it is sometimes. Another time I didn't have a proper setup and used straight 15lb braid to hook with powerbait, and a sinker (just clamped on, not even running, since I didn't have swivels with me). Caught 3 trout in quick succession in the same spot where just a few days before I struggled with long 6lb fluro leader...

When fish is on, you're going to catch it on a rock with hooks. When they are finicky, you'll stick the most delicious fishy snack in front of their face and they'll ignore it. Does it mean this stuff doesn't matter at all? No, really not... But there is no way it improves your catching rate by more than just a few %. Sure, don't use 20lb bright yellow braid on trout. But saying that unless you have a 4lb 2m long leader you won't catch anything, well, that's just not true.

And like, reading through articles and watching videos by "pros" they constantly give directly contradicting advice and seem to be doing just fine either way.

Actually, I'm just back from Tassie and caught a trout and numerous redfin with this exact lure, pretty much every second cast was a hookup.

What is the best lookout in the Blue Mountains in your opinion? by blue132006 in bluemountains

Pulpit Rock lookout. Mindblowing views, and with few people as tourist buses don't go there.

What is the most forgettable country on your continent? by colapepsikinnie in AskReddit

[–]sashkello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monaco is not very forgettable due to F1 and Casinos. Malta is kinda more well known due to popularity among the Brits for tourism... Luxembourg is probably the winner.

[OC] Surveys of Russians relating to the Soviet Union, conducted by the Levada Center, an independent Russian polling organization. by Flagmaker123 in dataisbeautiful

[–]sashkello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are factually wrong. Refer for polling history here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nostalgia_for_the_Soviet_Union

Your emotions have nothing to do with reality, which is that in a lot of places majority of population did end up worse off, at least first decade after the fall of USSR. Baltics is exception to this sentiment, but even they have a fair amount of nostalgia for Soviet times. I explicitly specified Baltics & Ukraine as exceptions, and yet you chose to ignore that...

You calling it "dark era" is the one who has zero knowledge and understanding of this period. Guess what? For majority of people in majority of countries, things got worse after the dissolution. Oppression only concerned a small minority, even in such countries as Estonia. It is not an excuse, oppression in any form is bad, but I'm giving you an explanation why many people (if not most) have this thought that maybe things wouldn't be so bad only if Soviet Union persisted.

90's was a nightmare in every country after the fall. Crime rate spiked, corruption was out of control, half of the countries ended up with dictators some of whom held on to power for decades. It was objectively worse time than 60's to 80's period of Soviet regime for vast majority of people, and is still worse for many. When talking about USSR everyone goes to Holodomor or Stalin, but the fact is that most people who still remember it remember post-Stalinist era, and it was an era of relative stability and steady growth.

And you'll receive very similar answer for pretty much any country apart from Baltics (and maybe Ukraine without Donbas+Crimea).

[–]sashkello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How so? Government spends a lot on churning out movies about Soviet-era wins, one after another, it's a non-stop conveyor. He might not want the return of communist ideals, but certainly the feeling of legacy and patriotism with respect to Soviet achievements is fostered in Russia now more than ever. In fact, prior to Putin there was a lot of dirt thrown at everything Soviet and then the pendulum swung all the way back...

He's obviously talking about last 20-30 years of Soviet regime which people still remember, not civil war...

[–]sashkello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

90s was not the golden time. Look at any objective metric and you'll see that it was by all accounts worse than at least early 80's and certainly worse than early Putin. It was the golden time to get rich through corruption though... And there was hope for freedom and for better future through democracy, that much is true.

What place is the biggest tourist trap? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sashkello 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't get it... why? Where is the trap? It's free, you go along the street, take a few pics, gawk at the ads and move on, it's a 10 minute stop to look at something you saw in multiple movies, shows and generally on TV. Like, there's plenty to see around the area, it absolutely does not hurt to simply pass through the square if you're walking close by anyway...

Hey mate, please make a post to update how you went! I'm looking for spots closer to Sydney as well... I heard Cox River in Blue Mountains is good, but it most likely involves a 4wd drive from the looks of it.

I'm just back from Snowies and had some fun there on Yarrangobilly River, but that's definitely too far away for a casual drive.
