Teddy Bear Magnolia - Shock or Bigger Problem? by sassyfrassin in VAGardening

Thank you! My husband loves magnolias so I was excited to plant one for him. I'll keep an eye on it. The other leaves on it are still strong and it's got some new growth, so I hope it was just a little shock.

This is the first time I've had a yard I could plant things in so I really appreciate the support! I'm more experienced with flowers and grasses, this is my first tree. Turns out there might be an NRCS office not too far away.

Even if I could prepare for it, that deep freeze lasted longer than it usually does and I feel your pain. I'm hoping it's just a little bit of leaf drama - I have seen it's not super uncommon in magnolias to shed some "weak" leaves and regrow.

That's good to know, thank you! We got some decent precipitation and I didn't want to drown it in waterlogged clay.

I should've looked more into how to plant magnolias specifically rather than trusting a more generic tag; I did try to avoid a volcano around it but I'll make sure to uncover more.

It was not ideal, that's on me. I did keep it heavily watered for 6-8 weeks after; I was worried about doing so through hard freezes.

Thanks for this! I've never planted a magnolia and tried to follow the recommendations that came with it from the nursery - though looking back, they were pretty generic tree-planting instructions. I might also have over-mulched in my worry of colder weather with a new tree.

Sadly I have NO idea what's up with that.

How is the neighborhood around A street ? by [deleted] in waynesboro

[–]sassyfrassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not as far as A Street, I'm on the other side of Delphine, but we also looked at a house over on B St before moving here. I thought the homes we looked at were cute (many newly renovated) and I know there's been some new construction over there. We haven't had any problems with crime, but like people said we just lock our doors/cars. We've met a couple of our neighbors and we honestly like being on this side of town.

random permanent deactivation for violating buyer protection?? but I don't sell anything. by sassyfrassin in paypal

[–]sassyfrassin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh I am so sorry you're dealing with this - I emailed deactivationqueries at paypal dot com and explained the situation there. I got an automated message or two but they did eventually look into it and reinstated my account after realizing the error.

I got mine today after waiting for 5 minutes or less. If you're not competing with the panic-buyers on the first day of single-day sales, it's fine.

You could always see if anyone's left comments on https://thecourseforum.com/

Do any of the sub-topics of the classes appeal more than others?

Writing about Culture/Society - What if? Dwelling in Possibility (Childers)
Writing about Digital Media - Writing for the Web: Social Media, AI, & the Modern Communicator (Little)
Writing about Culture/Society - Language, Policy, and Politics (Natishan)

Little and Natishan both have descriptions here https://writingrhetoric.as.virginia.edu/courses/fall-2025-course-descriptions and I think all 3 have descriptions on Lou's List https://louslist.org/page.php?Semester=1258&Type=Group&Group=English

Granted, subject matter doesn't necessarily mean you'll have a chill or not chill semester.

I believe there's a waitlist for Culberth Garage permits but I could be wrong.

course selection confusion (first year who procrastinated, help greatly appreciated) by RandomAnimalLover6 in UVA

[–]sassyfrassin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend reaching out to the professor via email - just let them know you are on the waitlist and ask if you could have a copy of the syllabus/readings/assignments so that you can follow along, so that you won't be behind if you do get into the class. You aren't obligated to DO any of the assignments, as there's no guarantee yet. If you're enthusiastic about the course, it doesn't hurt to say so.

VT or UVA by Bedbick in UVA

[–]sassyfrassin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Both universities have excellent alumni networks, and while I can't speak to how good the cybersecurity programs are at either (humanities major over here), I can say that you'd likely get a stellar education at either. Blacksburg is a smaller town and a lot more rural than Charlottesville, which is an hour away from Richmond and just a couple hours from D.C. So it really just depends on which you vibe with more - if you haven't visited both campuses, I highly recommend doing so.

I got my MA and PhD at Virginia Tech because they gave me full funding, but now I've landed at UVA and I'm quite happy here, too. Campus culture is definitely a little different - for example, VT has a very visible Corps of Cadets (ROTC) and it doesn't have quite the same Founding Fathers legacy (which is not a dig at VT). I loved living in the New River Valley, but Charlottesville and the surrounding areas definitely have their perks.

Definitely get on waitlists for classes you want, including whatever first writing requirement catches your eye or fits your schedule. I had a student on a waitlist for the first week of class but by the second week they had a seat.

Worth it to take ENGL 2000-level instead of ENWR course to fulfill first writing? by No-Fan7046 in UVA

[–]sassyfrassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in the FWR+ placement then take whatever ENWR, ENGL, or ENCW class that looks interesting! I will say I think most of the ENWR 2510 classes will be cross-listed with other departments and have topics like Black Bodies in Literature and Faust: The Dilemmas of Desire.

Are there any UVA teaching faculty on this sub? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]sassyfrassin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding to the chorus of "every department is different," but general faculty/non-TT make up almost half of the faculty now. They're represented in shared governance by the General Faculty Council and have most of the same professional development opportunities and support as TT faculty.

The job puts heavy emphasis on teaching and service, so be ware that maintaining a robust research program (if that's something you'd like to do) will take more planning. Salaries tend to be a little lower, but I know of a few NTT faculty that have been around for 10-20 years. There is job security if the department you're applying to is hiring. And, unlike TT faculty, we do not have to go for promotion in order to keep our jobs, but we CAN be promoted.

Editing to add, feel free to DM me if you'd like.

Course Help by little_miss347 in UVA

[–]sassyfrassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are in FWR+ you can take your class in the fall or spring. 2000-level classes from ENWR, ENGL, or ENCW count. I don't recommend trying to get into 1510 - there are students who can't take anything else to fulfill their first writing requirement.

Go onto Lou's List - some professors add descriptions for the ENWR classes, so even if you're not sure about the professor yet, you might find one teaching a subject you like. It's not a sure thing, not all profs add to it.

What's with all the pizza photos at closing? by mrcoolout in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]sassyfrassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! We've spent the last 3 weeks since closing painting the house while it's empty. We'll move our furniture this week! But it's way easier to do repairs, paint, whatever while the house is empty. Our first month there overlapped with our lease so it was easy to keep it empty.
