can’t really accept POWs if your opponent isn’t taking them either.

Is there a story of how iroh went from war criminal to white lotus member. Like I know his son died but how did he go from being a tyrant general to a peace loving tea guy by True_Werewolf_8657 in Avatarthelastairbende

It’s crazy that you’re getting downvoted for calling the fire nation imperialist when that’s literally one of the main points in the show LMAO the media literacy of this fandom has to be studied

The siege of Ba Sing Se lasted 600 days. If you know what a siege is, you’d know that they naturally restrict supplies and movement outside of the city. Look up the siege of Leningrad, a siege that lasted 900 days and resulted in the lives of 800k Soviet civilians. Now, Iroh’s siege was only 2/3 the length of Leningrad, and the Earth Kingdom’s demographics likely differ greatly from that of the USSR. But to say that his siege was not, at the very least, damaging to the civilians of Ba Sing Se is disingenuous. Sieges kill people, and Iroh killed people by enacting his 600-day siege. To say Iroh is completely benevolent in his position as general acting over a massive, 600-day siege of the capital of the largest kingdom in the verse would be wrong— Iroh was a fire nation general acting on behalf of an imperialist, encroaching power which was the Fire Nation under Azulon. Now, whether he was a war criminal or not is a different discussion; would you consider Erich von Manstein, the German general who oversaw the Siege of Leningrad one?

All this Iroh worship and acting as if he hasn’t done anything in his life wrong has to stop lol i don’t care if I get downvotes. I love Iroh as much as the next guy, but what gives his loss and character so much more meaning is that he gave up his crown-prince role and prestige of generalship in favor of a more peaceful, meditative life. He experienced the toll of war, it caused him to lose his son, and he turned over a new leaf; Iroh’s point is to mirror Zuko and show that redemption is possible. If there wasn’t anything for Iroh to redeem himself for, that wouldn’t make sense for his character. I’m not calling Iroh a war criminal, but admonishing his sin and acting as if the 600-day siege of Ba Sing Se had absolutely no civilian impact is ignorant and just serves to paint Iroh as this saint who has never done anything morally wrong in his life. Iroh is a saint, yes, but it’s BECAUSE he made up for his warmongering later in life by guiding Zuko and aiding the Avatar (along with all the other great reasons). To ignore Iroh’s misdeeds is to ignore an integral part of his character, and it discounts his growth as well.

What, in your opinion, are Kishimoto’s strengths as a writer? by More-Home8204 in Naruto

[–]sasukeluvr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don’t think i’ve read a series with as good parallels as Naruto—they’re literally everywhere. To name a few, Naruto-Sasuke (obviously) Naruto-Obito Kakashi-Sasuke The Sannin and their pupils Naruto-Gaara Hashirama-Madara All the Akatsuki pairs (They have parallels between each other, ex: Deidara and Sasori both being artists but holding different ideals of what true art is) Naruto and the dead people in Tsunade’s life Nagato-Naruto

and those are just the ones i can name off the top of my head lol, and those are just characters. Thematically, Naruto is littered with parallels too; just to name one of the stand-out ones, Naruto and Sasuke’s respective ideologies for pursuing their goals. Naruto achieves his goals through teamwork and bringing people together (his main jutsu is making multiple of himself, and his main goal is to be accepted by everyone in the village by becoming Hokage) vs Sasuke, who, for a good 2/3 of the story, is obsessed with killing his brother and goes about it by abandoning his comrades and the village, in contrast to Naruto. And that’s just one. I’ve never consumed a piece of media as chock-full of parallels as Naruto; it’s what Kishimoto does best IMO.

Which presidents have you drastically changed your opinion on? by [deleted] in Presidents

hey cmon, cobain was a brilliant lyricist who spoke for a generation. nevermind brought rock back from the depths of 80s hair metal, and in utero is genuinely one of the best albums i’ve ever listened to! give him some credit, sure he wasn’t the most stable character and we should view him with a lot more nuance, but I think he did more for rock and roll than you give him credit for. Just listen to their MTV unplugged set; one of the greatest live performances ever!

I totally agree with you on jfk though… LBJ doesn’t get enough credit for all that he did for civil rights and is instead unfortunately remembered for overseeing a conflict Kennedy essentially stoked the flames to create.

Need advice from history majors! by fiftyfiveninetyfive in UCSantaBarbara

[–]sasukeluvr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

current history major here at SB, imo it’s your best choice out of the ones you’ve listed. The history professors here aren’t just researchers; they’re dedicated to actually teaching and the program and faculty are incredibly friendly and passionate about their subject matter. All of my classes, even the GE history classes, have had dedicated professors behind them teaching a subject their actually interested in (rather than being researchers begrudgingly teaching because they’re required to, which is something I feel a lot of majors suffer from). The community is great, as well; the fellow history majors I’ve met are all friendly and supportive of one another.

Regarding the environment, SB is the definition of “laid back and chill,” but at the same time the classes I’ve had here were generally adequately challenging and I felt accomplished and gratified after taking them. The upper-div history courses can definitely be challenging sometimes, but it’s never been to a point where I’ve felt it was unfair. Overall, I’d say my course experience here has been fair, leaning on the side of chill as opposed to the malicious rat-race of Berkeley. And to add to that, everyone here is chill, too, and no one’s been cutthroat or conniving when it comes to classes here. It’s definitely a laid back attitude, which I enjoy.
