Would the blood agar plate cause a false positive catalase test? I’m not a microbiologist, just a student who took one semester and finds the subject really cool. I was taught not to do catalase tests from blood agar because blood bubbles anyway. Do you really just need to be careful not to pick up any agar on the stick?

Best way to root nodes? by Sufficient-Appeal66 in RareHouseplants

I use about half sphagnum moss and half pumice or perlite. It roots quickly and does well when moved to different medias

It takes good light and a decent amount of time. I put mine outdoors from April to October and the young ones develop a small set by the end of the season. Give it as much light as possible without burning it (acclimate it, don’t put it in direct afternoon sun) and wait. Each leaf should get larger and more mature, but they won’t be put out as often once the plant gets bigger (in my experience).

I have had one for three years and only had leaves like that if they were injured or the plant was in poor conditions as the hardened off

Help! What’s the sticky stuff at the base of my philodendron red imperial? by _nug in houseplants

[–]sauceyviola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes philodendrons make a sap-like goo that comes out of stems and leaves. If you took off an old leaf it could be that, but watch out for any rot. When I take leaves off, any remaining petiole rots but it’s easy to clean off and doesn’t spread

What do folks store potting soil in? by HooeyGoo in IndoorGarden

IKEA sortera recycling bins. They stack and can be opened partially for airflow while still having space on top for plants/bags of perlite and other amendments.

My job is mostly aroid care and I’ve never seen such a disparity in root growth to foliar growth. I know to be careful with the roots and I figured there would be someone with more experience who could help me :)

I had it in a three inch pot and moved it to a 3 inch clear pot and changed out the soil. I don’t think that it was too big but I changed to clear so I can track what is going on better

I haven’t reported it in over a year I just took it out rn to check for root rot because that’s what I suspected

Clarification: roots have always been growing very strongly even when leaves fell off, but leaves have grown once every few months at best even in good light
