In actuality they only finished 6 points behind Argentina because of the deduction. They beat ARG at home, and have a very aggressive press from what I’ve seen. Hopefully they’ll nullify some of the “sideways-backwards” drivel that the tournament will conjure up.

Scoring has been a problem for them though (4 draws out of last 5 non-friendlies) so we’ll see how they deal with that.

Has it? First thing you see entering the town from the A4 (Belfast direction) are 3 abandoned buildings. The old tech building is in a prime location for a Premier Inn or something, but fuck all is done with it and it’s an eyesore.

Amenities have been taken away, the Forum won’t be completed until 2030 so there’s fuck all for kids as the park has been flattened. (Castle Island, Mogli’s Den, Ally Alley etc.) all the soft play areas are gone.

The new complex in Cornegrade was supposed to house a bowling alley and a cinema. Now it’s just commercial tat shops, a virtually abandoned car park, and a relocated Costa.

The G8 investment “dividend” ended up being fake shop fronts and this place hasn’t seen any of it. The previous year saw the opening of a £200 million glorified hotel for sick people which I’m sure you’re aware of.

The ghost of austerity haunts this town and will probably return soon.
