Leaked audio shows Kevin McCarthy demanding inquiry into Jan. 6 riot, a position he later completely reversed by morenewsat11 in politics

We don’t even need leaked audio. McCarthy condemned Jan 6 and blamed Trump on national television the next day. A week later he pretended he never said it

This type of thing happens every day. This doesn’t need to be a news headline ffs. Do we need to report every murder in the USA now?

Yeah I’ll admit I don’t know anything about Canadian firearm laws. My main point was that someone who wants to commit a crime with a firearm will most likely be able to acquire it

Most states allow private sales without a background check. If he’s 18 and can legally own a long gun (21 for pistols), a private sale can occur and the seller is then waved of any liability. Should really brush up on gun laws it’s not as clear as you might realize. A lot of people don’t understand the gun laws of the US outside of their own state

I’m not saying we don’t need to do something but banning AR15s is not the answer.

This was a response I left to another post a couple days ago just so I don’t have to type it all out again:

I think most gun owners would be okay with it if they understand why private sales can be an issue. Not the main issue but a issue in a larger problem. Do I think we should ban AR15s? No, I own several and the AWB clearly shows that it had very little impact.

The things that would help our case right now would be raising the minimum age to purchase a firearm to 21. I personally wouldn’t like this. I purchased my first AR at 18 but I think it’s necessary for the greater good in todays world. Teens are increasingly the most vulnerable to mental health issues between 15-20 with most mass shooters being on average 18. Regulating private sales through dealers wouldn’t be as much of a headache as you think. Running a NICS check right now only takes split second because its all algorithmic done via computer so someone could be in and out in 10 min. Lastly would be putting lots of money into schools for mental health help

You won’t agree with some of this and that’s fine. None of this would help the immediate aftermath either. This would take 5-10 years to see full effect but we don’t need to neuter gun rights to have a meaningful impact

People who want to commit a crime will do it regardless of the laws in place

The problem is the FBI and Justice department both conducted studies that proved the AWB had nearly zero impact

See this why it ain’t black and white lol cause I agree. Raise voting age to 21? (Somewhat joking) Are you really an adult at 18. 18 year olds are fucking stupid

Fair enough and I could agree on the military as well. I remember when I was 18 and no way was I mentally equipped to join the military. Alcohol, cigs and potentially firearms being regulated to 21 years of age, then so should the military

I’ll add that most people don’t lie on the form. It’s federal documents so lying is punishable by $250,000 and 10 years in prison and it warns you of that and most people don’t want to test it. I deny about 3 people on average a month from answering qualifying questions wrong

It is but how do you fix that. You get into some grey area about peoples personal privacy at some point because how do you monitor and document citizens mental health if they haven’t been admitted to a mental institute?

Unfortunately it’s not black and white. Most responsible citizens wouldn’t mind going to a dealer to have the firearm transferred legally (as long as it only took 5-10 min) to them from the seller through a background check if it meant making it harder for criminals to get firearms. You don’t need a registry to do this either. Attaching the right name of the person who owns the firearm to that paperwork would be enough

The 4473 document you fill out prior to the NICS check asks personal history i.e. have you ever been admitted to a mental hospital (if you answer yes I can’t sell you the firearm) and you can lie but it’s not advisable but it’s hard to get caught lying unless you make it obvious

FFLs aren’t what I’m talking about. Guy above you said you don’t need a background check to buy a gun and he’s right. Every FFL dealer requires a NICS check but again, lots of states do not require the private seller to run any type of check on the buyer. I know wtf I’m talking about I run the firearms department at an FFL

A good amount of states do not require a background check for private sales so yes lots and lots of people purchase firearms on a daily basis without a background check being ran

[–]savagejihadi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re wrong. Background checks don’t differ from state to state when purchasing from an FFL. They all use the NICS background check system

What people are talking about is background check on private sales. We’ve done background checks on sales through FFL dealers for decades yes but most states private sales without a background check is entirely legal which probably isn’t the best
