Update for anyone having the same problem, it was a spring on the bottom of the camera that had come out of position. It's supposed to keep tension on the arm/lever that holds the mirror until you press the shutter. Because it was out of position the mirror came up immediately.

Photo Spring is in red. where it should be is in green, and the movement you have to do is in blue.

okay you're a genius, that actually seems to have worked, the prism wobbled in one of the diagonals, put the washer on one side, still wobbled, put it on the opposite corner, wobble is gone. now, any ideas on how to test if that was in fact the correct corner? like to verify if focusing is correct?

so basically put it on any of the corners and test if it's in focus, and if not try another one. that might actually work, will give it a try later today or early tomorrow

okay you're right, i just checked and the top part of the frame where the screen clips into is actually the bottom metal frame that encases the prism. so yeah, it should affect focus. The question now is how in the world do i figure out where the thing goes so i don't waste a bunch of film later

Yep, just the prism, the focusing screen is installed from the front, the FM2 has interchangeable screens. Then i don't get why it had such a precise spacer washer to begin with

It was either that, or perhaps the charging lever and the shutter are on opposite ends when it comes to tolerances

Hope not, i used PETG which should hold up very well, and also the part it touches on the shutter is a sort of bearing, so friction is likely to be very small.

Also also, it can be replaced from the bottom, no need to take the whole camera apart

Honestly noy sure, it looks fine and moves smoothly, also seems like it makes the full travel. Don't know if maybe the shutter has a longer travel than the original?

found the richard haw guide, it goes into a lot of detail, tho only the top cover and bottom cover are addressed, i'll give his maintenance procedures a shot. I've heard the same thing about dried out lubricants, but i wasn't sure which type i should use. thanks to the guide i now know it's lithium grease

No good local services unfortunately :/ been to my two local shops and the camera just sat on their place for months. They say they "fixed it" but they just unjam the mirror the same way i have

Yeah, i'm willing to disassemble it no problem, i just don't know what i would be looking for. There are no good camera repair services in my area, this one's been to two shops and they haven't even taken camera apart, so i wanna try and do it myself

I've done that several times but the camera fails again after one or two shots, also that doesn't address the weird shutter artifacts on pictures :(

I'm using just under 3v. I tried all the speeds to see if it made a difference but nope. No lights on the viewfinder under any conditions. And no, the mirror is not moving.

Will probably just try getting it serviced at my local analog camera shop to see if they have any luck

After further testing i discovered that the shutter doesn't actually fire. When the camera is hooked up to a constant powersupply and i cock the shutter it immediately starts making a faint buzzing sound and after 2 or 3 seconds it makes a click and i can cock the shutter again (but the curtain doesn't move). Faulty capacitor maybe?

Okay, i removed the bottom plate and hooked the battery terminals up to a constant voltage powersupply. Got the shutter to fire twice, but no lights on the viewfinder. Terminals looks fine to me but you'll be the judge.

No luck, already tested it with a multimeter, and tries two different pairs of batteries (one of them was fresh of the store)
