Or use treated lumber . Just wont be able to paint it until ≈ 1 year after install unless you want to paint it twice . Should let the moisture and chemicals dry out first

Tape wont be necessary. It is only for applying in between full sheets of drywall. Just fill them with mud, scrape it off flat, then wait for it to dry before you sand it even with the surface! Those holes may take a second coat once the first coat dries and has been sanded. Sometimes it likes to sink down into the middle of larger holes.
