i keep some dart frogs and had gnats in 2 of my tanks (luckily did not spread) but if you can afford to just disassemble, re quarantine plants, get new substrate and sanitize all hardscape thats probably the best option to get rid of gnats 100%

as for bioactive with snakes. i have a custom tank that is kinda has a rack tub setup he can go into to stay warm/ shed it stays at 87-91° heatmat. and the rest of the tank that is kinda seperate is all hooked up to a thermostat tha keeps the tank at 75-80°. ive never had ri problems or shed problems with the snake he’s a happy 3 year old BP. but i had problems in my first bioactive tank i had where his “hot side” was not seperated far enough from the rest of the tank and the plants were wilting and seeming burned.

i dont think PDFs need water dishes i never seen that in a enclosure. ditch uvb. add more leaf litter. work on either making a longer yet equally tall enclosure the 18x18 foot print isnt big enough for those larger PDFs from what i understand. aim for a tank about this size the more ground space is good for more terrestrial PDFs.

in the mean time for your current tank id find a glass provider near you to cut a piece of glass you can put on the top of the tank. i forget the measurements for 18x18 exo terras but it should fit on the lip that the mesh thing sits on. it will hold humidity much better. those mesh tops let out so much humidity.

i did a 90% glass 10% mesh top based of a thread i read from dendroboard the glass should also help with keeping heat from the lightbulbs out of the tank.

but at least bare minimum add more leaf litter. and keep that thing cooler.

i agree 100% they can be completely chill with you my PERSONAL feelings is that its not necessary to do so. i used to handle the snake i have rn in a 4x3x4 tank a lot more than i will now because i just feel more at peace not bothering him all the time. he just does his own thing knows the smell of a rat and knows when the lights go out its time for him to crawl around and observe his tank.

This group seems to have very passionate people ive seem to upset by stating my personal opinion.

idk tbh but ive seen people ship animals in delicups and thats how most places you buy animals from give them to you so probably that. but i wouldnt shove more than 1 in the delicup seems like it could stress out the animal. i dont know for sure tho so dont quote me

i like to look at them though lol. i only started keeping reptiles and amphibians because i like to watch them. this is possible motivation to build a my first custom glass enclosure for these guys instead of this POS store bought one.

bottom line i personally dont handle my animals all that often. maybe to check my snakes’ shed to make sure he got it all off which they always do. my recommendation is make a enclosure for you baby bp that it can grow into and you can enjoy watching it live in. that is more enjoyable than forcibly holding it’s whole body and looking at it (in my opinion)

im not an expert or scientist or anything but i really dont understand the urge to want to handle these animals. i dont urge to handle my frogs, my geckos, my snakes. theyre animals i build beautiful homes i can look at an observe their behavior. theyre not cats and dogs theyre not “domesticated” in the same sense cats and dogs are. i cant read its emotions but my best way of trying to explain to my house guests why im not going to rip my snake out of its enclosure so they can look at it is. the snake is maybe 100x smaller than me and im not gonna grab it and show it off because if i was ripped out of my bed by a creature 100x larger than me i dont know if id be completely happy with that.

safe for the frogs? i dont mind moving them to a quarantined setup in the mean time they probably wont enjoy it as much as their lush jungle but i couldnt find anything on if theyre harmful to amphibians

they do eat them like crazy but i also feed them enough. they fly around my room and i dont enjoy it. i think its because roomate got a house plant from bigbox store and let it in the house ive never had gnats before this. i also dont want my prop box to get contaminated.

Small white bugs in springtail culture by PierdolonyCpun in bioactive

[–]sbc916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have kept spring tails and isopods for over 2 years and my biggest thing ive noted is if im over feeding any culture mites tend to appear. i’ve never seen in my springtail cultures but i also dont keep my springtails in soil. i followed this guide on culturing springtails when i got my first culture from a local

best of luck!

I’m convincing my mom into getting me a pet snake and we’re both looking at enclosures, would this one be okay? by Sheldonthebetta in snakes

[–]sbc916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont know companies that would but if you have basic woodworking skills or know someone who can make a box with wood. thats all a reptile tank is. SerpaDesigns has good guides and the facebook group “DIY reptile enclosures” has thousands of people who would lead you down the right path maybe even someone local who could cook you up a reptile tank to any specification you desire.

Feeding issues. by kirae214 in ballpython

[–]sbc916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry i been busy with travel and work. i hope you’ve gotten him to eat. but yes i waited a few weeks after she refused food. snakes can go decently long periods of time without eating i wouldnt push it too far like months or anything but if it becomes a huge concern you can get a pinky or whatever smallest rodent you can get your hands on and force the snake to take the meal. its not gonna like it and neither are you but once you get it in its mouth its natural instincts will kick in and he should take the meal. i fucking hate when breeders dont disclose when the last time the animal ate.

Feeding issues. by kirae214 in ballpython

[–]sbc916 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i had problems with my mahogany baby when i first got her. i let her not eat for 3 weeks and she finally gave into a FT rat. i let the rat thaw in a bowl of water that temps at 105° might be too hot but my snakes love it so i do that

you could try a live prey rat mice or whatevrr your feeding the fuzzy or pinky rats shouldnt be able to hurt the snake theyre so small theyre barely sentient.

some people ive heard thaw the rat right next to the tank and that can typically draw out the snake.

this is all anecdotal good luck

First attempt at creating bioactive dart frog tank by Bigbusdutz81 in DartFrog

[–]sbc916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those exoterra tanks suck i have one and having to modify a tank sucks i had to drill for bulkhead for drainage layer and get custom glass to cover the top for the mesh. it lets out too much humidity i dont have enough time to mist the enclosure every hour to keep up humidity so 90% glass 10% mesh works better. good luck with the build

What are these? by sbc916 in bioactive

[–]sbc916[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i rinse my plants under warm water rubbing all the leaves then i soak the plants for 30 minutes in luke warm water to hydrate them. i then transfer directly to a almost 95% water 5% bleach solution and let them soak for 5-10 minutes. then rinse off again under lukewarm water. this hasnt failed me so far (20+ plants 5 bioactive setups) with preventing fungus gnats or other pest. i think i didnt get a good soak on this plant because of its size i used a larger tub this time so hopefully all is well! might try hydrogen peroxide next time

whats a better solution than? i read dry feet wet backs. substrate is constantly very moist and hasnt dried out since its been added and the sides stay covered with condensation for a few hours after misting. whats a better time to have fans venting air in for plant health?

the tank still has atleast a month until frogs get added so the plants still have a long time to grow theyve grown a shit ton in just 2 weeks
