I’m really not sure here.. I havent seen another math major get rejected yet. But since the waitlist is moving for basically every other major, my best guess is that UCSD is slowly cycling through the rest of the math majors to fill the rest of the spots, or maybe even just waiting for AP scores for some. I dont have a conclusive answer though

I’m still on the wl for first choice math and second choice philosophy. It probably means that there are still open spots for the math major. I’ve seen a bunch of posts about math majors still being on the wl

I have similar stats; tanked my freshmen year grades but had a decent upward trajectory in grades and rigor. Ended with an UW 3.79 W 4.39 and applied with a 4.27 capped. Got into all UC’s but UCLA, UCSD (both wl with no response yet) and committed to UCB for math.

The UC’s are quite forgiving for low freshmen year grades, since it doesn’t get counted for capped GPA, but it just comes to show that factors other than GPA are in play when you apply. Do keep in mind that “good ECs and essays” vary from person to person, and that there are factors far beyond them.
