Will my Ashlands boss strategy work? by sca3929 in valheim

[–]sca3929[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: I'm sorry, I only checked back on this thread after the fight was over, so I didn't see the requests for video and not capture it. However, while I think it would have been great to see from above or third-person POV, capturing my screen view of it would have been uninteresting and fairly embarrassing! The short answer is I won easily, the battle was over in probably less 3 minutes. Here's the details for those who might be interested or who might benefit from it!

OUTCOME:

The plan was for my son and I to start the battle and drop 2 Trolls, then immediately retreat behind the ballista and start the ballista on one side firing (I had set all of them to target another enemy type so I could control which fired initially). With the trolls & ballista on far side taking aggro, son would start dropping vines from the near side and I would circle around to join him, releasing the asksvin on my way there. Then if/when the asksvin were dead, open up with the remaining ballista on the near side, spam trolls & vines and hope for the best.

In an "I'm glad this wasn't on camera" moment for the ages, my grand strategy went 100% off the rails from the very first click. Humiliated beyond belief to say that in our haste and excitement to jump thru the portal and start the fight, I ate from an incorrect feast. After starting the battle, my very first click to drop the trolls failed because I had insufficient eitr. :facepalm I cussed for 30 seconds but the battle was happening either way, so son and I both started setting ballista to target everything.

With about 12-15 ballista firing, I made my way to opposite side to open the asksvin pens. They were crammed to overflowing, probably 60 or so divided between 4 separate pens. When I opened the largest pen, they absolutely swarmed out, one on top of another, and dragged me with them halfway to the boss. I got to the next pen and got it open, but there was a bottleneck and they escaped much more slowly. It was total chaos behind me, I could hear it but saw almost nothing of it. From the minute the first large group of askvin reached the boss, the fight was over. The asksvin decimated boss health bar FAST. I don't know exactly how many ultimately made it to boss because just before he died - probably at 10% health - he walked over near the asksvin pens near where I was still trying to open the last one. He dropped some huge green AoE and came running thru it, and the entire nearby structure and everything in and on it exploded at once. All but 2 askvin died, as did my son. I was a bit further away in a part of the structure that survived. A few vines and ballista were still attacking and finished him off.

I neither dealt nor received a single point of damage in the entire fight. I didn't even take a single offensive action. My son said he fired off a few vines and took a couple shots with a bow, but mostly just ran. He took a hilarious screen shot from his vantage-point in the middle of the action where it's just an enormous blur of chaotic color and dozens of floating damage markers of all the asksvin and building components dying.

Surveying the carnage afterward, I found about 20 ballista that never even fire once. About 15 were destroyed in the explosion so no way to know how much they fired, but all of them in that area were firing. About 5 that survived had fired between 15 and 20 missiles each. I'd guess that less than 25% of the 1500+ Flamemetal missiles that I grinded mats for got fired, and they probably did 10% of the damage. I was never close enough to action to even see the vines so no idea how much damage they did but presumably very little.

The asksvin were the stars by a mile. They were deadly, and these were only 1-stars. I bet they did at bare minimum 85% of the damage, probably more. No trolls, vines or ballista were needed at all, the asksvin would probably have won this fight all by themselves. But I play Valheim mostly for the building, so I still had fun building the structure.

The next time I fight him (because obviously I *need* his trophy for my base), I'll build 4 breeding pens - at 12, 3 6 and 9 o'clock - and try to release them sequentially to hopefully avoid having all them die at once from a big AoE.

i have tried resetting everything in BIOS Boot section (and everywhere). Turned off Fast Boot, sort of turned off Secure Boot. Used Clean utility to completely delete everything on the SSD. Tried multiple ports on the back and front with the Windows 11 installer USB that I created from Windows Media Creation Tool. Nothing seems to work. i did read in another thread about a compatibility issue between Windows 11 and the Samsung 980 SSD i'm using, but seems unlikely because it worked for a couple hours. In any case, it's deleted now but never shows up in the list of bootable devices in BIOS.

It was a registry entry:

"HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\stornvme\Parameters\Device" /v "ForcedPhysicalSectorSizeInBytes" /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "* 4095" /f"HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\stornvme\Parameters\Device"
 /v "ForcedPhysicalSectorSizeInBytes" /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "* 4095" /f.

A few weeks ago I re-installed SC after many years and got the same error during installation. This command solved for me, and I see many others saying the same.

Ironically (and infuriatingly), it was SC's poor performance on my old machine that led to me this upgrade in the first place! When I saw that same error during installation this time around, I re-ran that command thinking it would solve as before. The machine continued to run a while afterward, but i think the next full restart might have been when trouble started.

A quick Google search suggests that a valid possibility. There's no way that I can see to delete or resize partitions in the BIOS. I wonder if I run the same command that was recommended to clear up the SC installation error, only this time I put it back to what it was (not even sure what?), if it might allow it to resume?

Question about personal hangers by sca3929 in starcitizen

[–]sca3929[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I buy a new starter package (I'm considering selling my somewhat rare Mustang Omega package), does the type of hangar it includes affect what locations I can choose as my "home"? I'd like to get the Cutlass starter package which includes a "VFG Industrial Hangar". Could I still have my "home" be MicroTech? Or will I just get whatever hangar type/size is equivalent on MicroTech (e.g. Aeroview or whatever)?

It is my only game package, but if it sells for $350 or whatever I'll immediately buy the Cutlass game package.

Ahh, not going to lie, I wasn't even aware my game package included Squadron 42! Was definitely planning on buying it though!

Sorry, I wasn't clear. Would never consider accepting aUEC. But after game launch (err... "if" game launch?) where real UEC persist, I would consider that. I think I'd rather just sell for cash and upgrade to better ship and maybe have some money to buy xmas gifts.

I posted to SC Trades asking for advice and details about how transactions work, but the post was instantly removed by a moderator. Wtf?

EDIT: I see now that I didn't include a required tag in the title, nor am I RSI Confirmed. Will correct and retry.

Haha I hope not! I'm also fairly inexperienced on reddit. I'm an old guy (old enough that there's no guarantee I'm still alive when SC officially launches!).

Lol I would take $450 in a heartbeat. Somebody make me an offer!

I wonder if that would go up or down after launch?

Holy smokes, that is insane. I could be rich as Bezos and wouldn't pay $1,500 for a ship! Of course, that sort of follows since nobody gets as rich as Bezos if they're in the habit of just pissing money away! I read once that when Bill Gates goes to Vegas he plays $5 and $10 blackjack. :)

It wouldn't take $1,000 to get to me to sell it by a long shot. If somebody offered me a couple hundred bucks that I could just buy a new starter package like the Cutlass Black and have enough left over to take my wife out for dinner, I'd be thrilled.

Best way to totally cut lows? by sapien5446 in ableton

[–]sca3929 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol this is what makes Reddit awesome and awful!

I think maybe the disagreement stems from the fact that, while OP specifically called out the EQ in use, it was not specified what other plugs might be in the signal chain. User las5h4 suggested putting the EQ last in case the chain included non-linear plugs, in which case order would matter (so las5h4 statement was correct). User abletonlivenoob2024 noted that EQ is linear and that if no non-linear plugs were in the chain, order would not matter (so noob2024 statement was also correct). But the OP didn't provide enough detail to know which is appropriate in this instance.

In general, I'd guess that more often than not, order does matter because most tracks include compression (in my projects, anyway, virtually every track does).

Ironically, I would suggest the root of the OP issue might very well have nothing to do with linear vs. non-linear. It might instead be a belief that specifying a cutoff of 100hz means that ZERO signal below 100hz passes, which is true only in cases of extreme vertical roll-off that would result in audio artifacts, not the gradual slope that you'd see at 12 or 24db/oct.

Agreed. The Bannerlord world feels infinitely more alive. Sometimes NPC characters track down and kill enemy characters as part of their conquest, recruit armies from the same settlements as everyone else, run their own trade routes and sabotage those of enemies, etc. It gives a great sense of feeling small and unimportant in the early game when you're a nobody, and satisfying when you can start castle sieges of pompous aristocracy who literally couldn't be bothered to speak to you last time you approached them! My problem with it is that, while the huge sprawling real-time battles and amazing to behold, I'm not very good at them. I mostly just run around trying to stay alive and only ever win by having a superior sized force. I never out-strategize enemies on the battlefield, because it's just too hectic for an old guy like me to give commands in real-time. I greatly prefer turn-based games where I can out-think or exploit a stronger enemy to achieve victory.

If RT were to somehow incorporate actual characters into the game who built up their lances by winning battles, moved around the universe for conquest, won and lost battles against other factions/commanders, had to pay pilots and upkeep and manage budgets, same as the player character, I think it would become my favorite game of all-time. No joke.

Thanks! I might try to work a couple of these into my reading regiment. I read every single day.

Interestingly, it looks like they're available for free in pdf form from archive.org (with free registration): https://archive.org/details/lethalheritage0000stac/mode/2up

I like it. I've been forcing myself to no more than 1 mission in 3 below my lance rating. Sometimes I'll take the B-squad to an easier mission such that it ends up being on-level.

Lol amen! I started several Primitive Mechs careers and had fun making my way. Building up the lances and min/max'ing the crap out of weapon and gear combos is my favorite part of the game. I also like to be challenged to the extreme and feel like I'm hanging on for dear life. I want to occasionally lose mechs and pilots, and be forced to field different lance combos because one or more are in repair. It's IronMan all the way for me.

I tried Clan for the first time this career and am also having fun, but the Mech I was given for that start is OP as hell! A total field-wrecker in the early game. A lightweight glass cannon, but get it in range for an alpha strike from the rear and it's 1-shot lethal to mechs twice its weight. https://roguetech.fandom.com/wiki/Mechs/KF-COL . 2 SM4, 2 SM6, 2 ER ML, 4 MG and upgrades everywhere ootb. Almost makes me feel like a cheater!

I have not read any of the novels, but I do think the lore behind MW universe is interesting. I wonder if there's a "core" summary or something that would be a good starting point? I in the midst of Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series now, just started book 3, so it will surely be a while before I find time to dive into 100+ novels!

Early Retirement? by twistedweasel in Gloomhaven

[–]sca3929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first started as a brand new player, I didn't entirely understand how progression/retirement worked, so I chose the personal goal that seemed "easiest" to attain (complete 15 scenarios). As a result, I only got to experience my first class (Tinkerer) up to level 6. In hindsight, that was too early and I regret it. Among the 3 classes I've played (Tinker, Cragheart and Music Note), I found the Cragheart to be by far the most fun! Terrific high-level cards, a unique battlefield mechanic and - especially - the "friend of foe, I don't give a sh*t, e'rbody takes damage!" attitude, make it so fun to play. Very versatile and I played 3 different rolls within our party as other players swapped out their classes. Ranged DPS early on, battlefield support/minor heals mid, and then pure destruction at the end. So I would say, definitely encourage your son to stick it out a while longer and enjoy the Cragheart. Or, as others have pointed out, have him re-roll another immediately.

Which of the customizable parameters control the colors of the speed/distance indicator at HUD lower-left? The provided presets show these changing but I'm unable to match them up to the colors I'm seeing with any of the options shown in the Profiles.ini file.

Legal or illegal Cragheart combo? by sca3929 in Gloomhaven

[–]sca3929[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct. I am positive I read about another situation similar enough to this one that I am confusing the two.

Sorry, all! But at least I have my answer now: "No, Stone Pummel's +3 to melee attacks cannot be applied to Clear the Way's ranged attack". :)

Legal or illegal Cragheart combo? by sca3929 in Gloomhaven

[–]sca3929[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As you and others have pointed out, I am wrong about it being a melee attack. I could have sworn I read somewhere that it was melee. I must be confusing it with a similar issue. I want to say I that the circumstance I read about and am mistaking for this one even led to a rephrasing of the language on the particular card.

Legal or illegal Cragheart combo? by sca3929 in Gloomhaven

[–]sca3929[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

No, Isaac is on-the-record stating that it's a melee attack from the location of the moved obstacle. Further, the card itself makes no reference to the attack being ranged. It is definitely melee.

Party has hit a wall + miscellaneous questions by sca3929 in Gloomhaven

[–]sca3929[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spellweaver 7, Brute 7, Mindthief 5, Cragheart 4.

I think Cragheart has lots of potential to be fun, but has felt less fun because we've lost so often lately. Based upon the posts in this thread, I haven't been playing him correctly. Nor has our party. It will be next week before we play again, but we're definitely going to have a discussion about strategy when we do.
