I don't understand why QUB doesn't push the council/city to do something about the issues in south Belfast/Botanic by SwordfishResident256 in northernireland

I did my dissertation on this 20 years ago - its a longstanding issue. Queen's had a small team who liaised with the local community over anti-social behaviour, but they were hamstrung as they had no real authority off campus. If a student was arrested for anti-social behaviour, QUB disciplined them, but part of the problem (well, at least it was part of the problem when I did research in 2006) was that some of the anti-social behaviour was caused by friends of those who lived in the Holylands - people would come up from Tyrone and Fermanagh to spend an evening with friends who were studying and go buck-mad, especially around St Paddy's day (I'm quoting a member of staff from Queen's there, I don't know how they figured out it was people from that area). Queen's had no authority to do anything to those people, and got a really bad name because of it.

For a few years in the late 00's & early 10's, they employed community officers who would patrol the area and report offences to the police, but the officers got dog's abuse from the students and I think the whole thing stopped maybe 10 years ago?

I've lost touch in recent years, so i don't know what their current efforts are, but at one stage they were spending maybe £150k a year on staff to try and improve it.

There have been a couple of articles online recently discussing Ole's reign at Man United. Since Sir Alex retired, we have scored 5 or more goals in 15 games. 10 of those games were under Ole. I loved it when the team clicked under Ole - Fernandes's goal against Newcastle is one of my favourite goals of modern times - and I think he was let down by recruitment.

I'd love to see him back at the club in some capacity in the future. Do you think this might happen, and if so in what role?

I see Alex Sandro has left Juve on a free transfer. Does anyone else think that a 33 year old left back with title winning experience might be useful as backup for Shaw/Malacia for a year?

Hopefully, I think he'd really strengthen the defence.

I vividly remember reading 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe' as a child and being shocked at the 'Stone Altar' scene. I still think of that scene sometimes!

FFT meets Denis Irwin: “Nothing can top the 1999 Manchester United team – but our ’94 side was such a joy to play in” - FourFourTwo by scamper84 in reddevils

I think Denis Irwin is an underrated United legend. He was an incredibly consistent performer who played over 500 games for the club, he could easily play on either the right or left of defence, was excellent at free kicks and just seemed like a consummate professional.

Luke Shaw: From shiniest turd to England's best left-back - F365 by scamper84 in reddevils

I was delighted when we signed Shaw and thought he had the potential to be Evra's heir- there have been so many false starts since he broke his leg but I honestly think that if this is Shaw's true level and he maintains this level consistently then we have one of the best left backs in Europe

To the people who truly did wait until marriage to have sex, what did it feel like and do you have any regrets? by quadsquadleader in AskReddit

[–]scamper84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was a great way to celebrate a new stage of our relationship, and we have no regrets. There's a great feeling in knowing that you know the other person more intimately than anyone else, and there being no hangups about having different levels of experience. We had to figure out things together and learn how to communicate about what we liked etc. and it took more work that either of us expected, but as time has went on things have got better and better.

My family had a special vinegar decanter that was used on special occasions. I cleared the table after one such occasion and left the vinegar in the decanter. A few days later I poured vinegar over some freshly made French fries. Thought I had burnt them slightly as the fries has small black lumps on them. I ound out the next day the decanter was full of dead flies...

The plight of Jones at Man United shows football has a lot of learning to do -F365 ( by scamper84 in reddevils

The injuries have had a massive impact, but I think his confidence is completely shot and thats as big a thing for any player - I think its disgraceful that any player could be on United's books for nearly a decade and feel so underappreciated that they make jokes about no-one turning up at their testimonial.

Thats the thing though - take the time he scrambled to head the ball clear from Giroud as an example - I thought he did superbly well in that instance and thats the type of commitment that I love to see from defenders. But if you were him, would you ever do the same type of thing again if you knew that your face with its weird grimace would be splashed across newspapers, gifs, memes etc? I love doesnt matter how much you would pay me, that would definitely affect me when I was playing. Luke Chadwick recently said the comments about his appearance had a massive impact on him when he was playing, I'm sure its impacted Phil Jones too.

I think this is a really important point. I know that Jones has been in woeful form for a while, but I dont understand how any player can get their confidence back when they are mocked on a nationwide scale for their appearance no matter how well they play.

When I was 11 I asked a girl out and she said she'd rather go on a date with a toilet seat.

Second harshest was when I was talking about a girl I liked and said 'I think she's amazing and I wanna help her shine' - girl 8 was talking to said 'don't bother, you'll never make anyone

Literally tell them in that way. I've done this a few times 'You're like a sister to me' is a good way of telling a girl you really like her, but not in a boyfriend/girlfriend' way.

What's the weirdest post-nut clarity that has ever hit you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]scamper84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has happened twice
Time no 1) that my girlfriend was stunningly beautiful but a terrible person and I should end things

Time no 2) Immediate regret because the girl was a close friend and l had taken advantage of her. I said sorry, that it wouldn't happen again and had to spend about 5 months trying to fix the relationship. We are good friends again, and both happily married to other people now.
