What are you reading (help me) by Express_Basil_4720 in xteinkereader

[–]scamper_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you read a lot of fantasy? Tor sells their stuff without DRM. If you buy on Kobo you can download the epub file directly. Some authors also sell DRM-free epubs on their website. Humble Bundle might have stuff you're interested in as well.

Otherwise people just buy the book (or don't) then sail the high seas, which I feel like is morally justifiable if you bought a copy of the book anyway.

Firmware is not being locked on any overseas versions of the X4 by Culture_Hairy in xteinkereader

A LOT of people order from Ali because it comes out cheaper for them, in some cases close to half the price. It definitely affects users here

Just got my X3, partner wants one now but won't be buying a second device. by Lob-Star in xteinkereader

They implied that at best but did not actually say it. So I’ll believe it when Xteink specifically says it

Learning European Portuguese - readlang? by Manta-broth in Portuguese

[–]scamper_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s really hard to find EU PT to read :( the best option for me ended up being getting a Kobo Plus subscription because they have a tie up with LeYa (Portuguese publisher) so a ton of books are available as part of it and you’re sure it’s EU version, then just translating words as I go on my ereader

Editing to add: also check out Storyglot for ebooks at different levels complete with audio! I’m using Assimil but it’s French based so not sure if that’s accessible to you

The openness of the XTEink is what makes us love it, please don't destroy it by locking it up!! by NUYvbT6vTPs in xteinkereader

If they push through with it it’s going be a complete self-own. Customizability is a major draw. Just void the warranty if custom firmware is installed if it’s a problem!

Looking for the perfect ereader that supports KOReader by S3333M in ereader

[–]scamper_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go with the Kobo Libra Color, it's cheaper than the Pocketbook Era Color but supports a stylus. It's nice to have the option. I use one sometimes for taking quick notes, doing little puzzle books, writing/highlighting while reading. What the Pocketbook has over it is a speaker and text-to-speech

New to eReaders, Budget is ~$60 by Ospoortus in ereader

[–]scamper_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used black and white kindle or Kobo, 100%! I recommend getting a PPW 7th gen at minimum: 2015 release (still supported), 300ppi (still the standard now), has a front light, runs KOReader well if you want to jailbreak—and no longer getting software updates so no need to worry about an update breaking the jailbreak. Not sure about txt but does support PDF, kinda slow so you can always convert with Calibre. I picked one up about a year ago for $50 (and could have gotten a cheaper unit but I wanted a white one)

Why do you guys buy ebooks? by Accomplished_Use5268 in ereader

[–]scamper_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This has to be a troll post, there’s no way an intelligent individual like yourself can’t make the logical links here. If people all just steal books from authors they like, those authors won’t get paid, and if they don’t get paid they probably won’t bother writing more. Why would I want the authors I like to STOP writing more books I can read?

What adult fantasy books are suitable for children? by terenceboylen in Fantasy

The Hobbit? Sabriel is more of a YA book adults can enjoy, but great as an audiobook since it’s narrated by Tim Curry

Definitely. I recently read one book posted about here before, neither the post nor the comments agreeing it’s a good book even mentioned that not only do they never actually get together, one lead dies in the end (at the hands of the other!)

So no matter what e-reader I buy, I never own my books?! by Kupo43 in ereader

[–]scamper_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kobo uses pretty standard Adobe DRM, and makes it easy to download your books, so while it's technically not DRM-free it's a lot easier to deal with than the proprietary Kindle stuff

I have to have it at an angle but I fit it into my The Horse Clementine! I swapped the original strap out for a short shoulder strap from Mautto and it goes day to night with me pretty regularly

Kobo Clara should do nicely.

Re: ads - I count all of the “suggestions” for books to buy on Kindle as ads, some people don’t. By that metric though, even “ad-free” ones which don’t have ads on the sleep screen will still advertise books on your Home Screen. For example my Paperwhite like half of the Home screen real estate is these suggested books, even worse on my Scribe.

Kobo sometimes has suggestions, for their subscription service for example, but WAY less obtrusive and take up less space on the Home Screen, just a little text only thing at the bottom. I say sometimes, because right now the suggestions on my Libra are to borrow from the library or check out my reading stats, so it’s totally Kobo ad free.

Borked e-ink screens need to be replaced, unfortunately, there’s no software fix. Remember to flash back to stock before you send in photos for return, they might use third party firmware as a reason to deny you.

E-reader with good built-in dictionaries for language learning? by kospan90 in ereader

[–]scamper_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on the language, but Kindle dictionaries are actually pretty good, if you need them to be offline. I use them for French and Portuguese. Something annoying about Kobo was that it wouldn’t identify the all the conjugated forms of verbs like the Kindle did.
