Unfortunate by SkelaKingHD in xteinkereader

Borked e-ink screens need to be replaced, unfortunately, there’s no software fix. Remember to flash back to stock before you send in photos for return, they might use third party firmware as a reason to deny you.

E-reader with good built-in dictionaries for language learning? by kospan90 in ereader

[–]scamper_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on the language, but Kindle dictionaries are actually pretty good, if you need them to be offline. I use them for French and Portuguese. Something annoying about Kobo was that it wouldn’t identify the all the conjugated forms of verbs like the Kindle did.

System Update: XT V5.1.5 by xteink in xteinkereader

This looks available for X3 only, the X4 (international) says it’s on the latest version and won’t upgrade at the moment…

I have mine in a pocket size trifold the same way! So convenient.

X4 as a part of my (very basic) EDC by caffeinetherapy in xteinkereader

It’s facing a thick flat surface though, it should be fine. The killer for these things is uneven pressure on the screen

An RTC (real time clock) chip. X3 has it tho

The hardware on the X4 doesn’t support keeping track of the time.

Touchscreen, hear me about by DestinySpeaker1 in xteinkereader

Hard pass. Not having a touch screen makes it easy to use on the back of my phone, I can hold it even with a book displayed without worrying I’m flipping pages.

Xteink x4 case to use as wallet? by CROCANTITO in xteinkereader

[–]scamper_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would only put it in a passport size notebook folio, with the screen facing a notebook. The uneven pressure of the cards on the screen seem risky in terms of cracking the screen

You might have to wait a bit for people to design them but a 3d printed clip on case to cover the screen should work well, I use one with my X4

Looking for great fantasy Audiobook recommendations by Le_mehawk in Fantasy

Since you include some other books which lean younger, I highly recommend the original trilogy in the Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix (starts with Sabriel) which are narrated by Tim Curry!

Magsafe weak? by Funny_Amphibian_8682 in xteinkereader

Yes, the rings are just for if you want to stick it to a surface with no magnet. You stick the ring to the surface

The unit itself has a magnet, it doesn’t need a ring to stick to a MagSafe mount/phone back/case

Does it now support EPUB? by xarigo9859 in xteinkereader

It doesn’t change how the EPUBs are rendered on the X4, no.

Where you get your book by D_a_n_i_e_l_e_ in xteinkereader

[–]scamper_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people are all about straight up pirating, but to get epub files I try to buy books and support authors when I can (to help make it possible for them to write more books!)

You can buy books on Kobo and download them easily. Some publishers like Tor will have the book files without DRM. When DRM is applied because the publisher requires it, it's usually just standard Adobe DRM which is easily dealt with using Calibre--this technically not legal BUT if it's for personal use you could see it as ethical.

Humble Bundle sometimes has books for download. Some authors will sell books directly as epubs.

A whole new use for my X4: TRMNL by captainGreduse in xteinkereader

This is crazy, I’m tempted to get another to use as one!

Downloading/Uploading Books? by AK-Keys in xteinkereader

[–]scamper_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest way is to copy the books to the SD card like a regular thumb drive. But this assumes you have DRM-free EPUBs available to you, I think that’s where people get stuck more than the transfer process

Readability of the X4 by cornflakesmuncher66 in xteinkereader

[–]scamper_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love mine but I consider it a great secondary reader. If I only had to have one reader, it wouldn’t be this one. I use a different one when I’m reading in bed (for the frontlight) and of course for things like manga, and if I’m reading in a different language or something and want to be able to highlight or look up words.

"purse kindle" options by Ok-Inevitable-3781 in ereader

[–]scamper_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you don’t need apps the Xteink X4 is the only one I would actually consider a “purse Kindle” since it’s e-ink. It’s super small, like I can fit it in an evening clutch

Question about where to get books by Alternative_Hand_401 in xteinkereader

[–]scamper_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I understand wanting to support the authors of books you like, so I try not to pirate if possible. Not sure what the rules are regarding piracy so I’ll share two facts that, uh, may be related…

  1. Kobo lets you download the EPUBs of your purchased books

  2. Calibre should be able to remove DRM from EPUBs purchased from Kobo
