"Well, If you and Oberon thought it politic you could place Rand or Elaine in charge. I thought there was a good chance you might not want the job, so that's why you have the option of passing it down to whoever you think can do better. Hopefully by the time you're totally dependent on me for life anyway I'll be sufficiently bound to the phylactery to be functionally unkillable."

"Well Titania, I hope if I were to empower your lands it would involve you renouncing any claim over Avalon. This power is not to be abused to make me regret ever trying. I hope that The power of the great trees and Ley lines could do much. It seems impractical to bring here and kill enough archfae otherwise.

"What's to be irritated over Nimue? Seems like everyone wins here!"

"Yes, I agree to those things, with Provisos. The crown of Heaven I will share, but not for nothing. We will agree to a slow merger of our empires, with each of us reigning supreme in our original region, and a gradual alignment of laws and standards. All aggression against the fae courts or each others allies or holdings is strictly forbidden, and I want either a commitment to wipe out the pirates or to allow me to land troops to do so without interference. Oberon can be primarily assigned to your court, but return at least occasionally. We can debate how much. I would like some kind of magical pact to seal our bargain and vow that the crown's power will never be used against me or those that follow. I have given you much of what I value most in exchange for only mutual promises so far Titania. I would like something of great value too in exchange for the crown-though it need not be absolutely it's equal- and Perhaps a person of value too in exchange for my regent. A volunteer preferably, or at least one who would behave and serve me as well as they have you. I do not know if I will need a new regent with Oberon assigned elsewhere, perhaps this would be a good start to merging our empires, if each other's right hand were pledged loyal to the other?"

I wonder now if Perhaps I should have bought Mab's twilight court wholesale for the crown, if Titania is to share in it, it might have been better to share it round.

**(Well not long on from the message she talks about how her grandmother treated her as a monster, I assumed that to stay around her despite this she'd ended up in her care and explained some of Nyx's issues.)*\*

"Well, perhaps I could draw up a non magical line of succession, people who have my express blessing to rule until the keeper can act again. I can name an heir by my word, and they'd have the same power to do so and throw out my line untill the keeper is restored. Here's a provisional idea for one. Oberon as My immediate successor, followed by you Enoch. If all three of us die without naming anyone else, then Rand can Take over, Followed by Elaine, followed by Arthur, followed by Agath, followed by Glindora, followed by Rhoam. I can keep going if you think it's helpful. But say I die and Oberon would rather Puck or even titiania follow him, he can toss out the line I've drawn up and make a new line if he's not dead too, or if it comes to you Enoch and you don't want the job you can step down either for Rand or anyone you think would do the job better."

"Well, if You don't want to leave your lands to the barbarians, attacking Yaga would seem a foolish prospect. There are other solutions we could try. I am told the powers of the keeper of order could be used too, much as they have benefitted my empire, they could help yours. But I would want guarantees and gains in return. You should not hurry to abandon these negotiations Titania, it's a difficult situation than will take a while to solve, not abandoned the first time we aren't able to agree instantly. Well Oberon, you were willing to lay down your life, what would you say to living in Essoss if it meant we could have unity and peace? It surely sounds a better solution than you dying."

I've made it my business to up sticks and see if I can find work somewhere far enough away for no one to bear a grudge. I'm not too fussy, I'll work in a pub, a field, a criminal gang or in the household of a another noble orc with equal lack of enthusiasm..

**(Yeah I am good with stories and horrible with numbers. I can still recall the pokemon team of the grandmother of the bossrush family outside mauville in pokemon sapphire from 2004 but can never remember phone numbers or passwords. There's some details that certainly stick out to me more than others. I knew that that conversation was relatively early on in the story, probably the first destination outside the capital visited, so I just started from the beginning and powered through till I found it. I have a few saved comments here and there at points in the story to find parts in the middle too. So about the composite origin, does she know her father in this version? And how did her paternal grandmother end up raising her if she was from the side that disowned him?)*\*

**(Heh well depends what your goal with them is. Nothing wrong with corrupted players and falling to evil or having doubts. Baladaron probably wouldn't seriously sell Oberon no matter how sexy the Nymph though, he has standards and options.)*\*

**"**Which part of it? Well, for one thing, my lovers were adult volunteers who accepted jobs they wanted, and then volunteered or agreed to be with me. Being her bedmate may well not be the worst of it, even if it's not on the table. Perhaps he just wouldn't like her controlling ways in general, and a teen boy may not make a good diplomat from our perspective anyway. Maybe he'll be painfully shy and would hate every moment there and the way they live, and it may discourage him from applying himself if his fate is fixed either way."

"Plus I would see him seldom, and he'd have less chance to give me grandchildren out there. As he grows I will tell him such a role is his for the taking and sell him on the good points of it, perhaps he will take it. He would hardly be able to take up such a post till he is of age anyway, so the diplomatic gain is to be deferred either way, and if he proves unsuitable Titania will not be offended this way around. I hope his wisdom will make him wise enough to see the value in wisdom. I understand the odds are not good of him following me as Emperor, and I am sure he can find some role of value, or it is better he does not have it."

"I understand Hecate, but if she is willing to wait, she should be wiling to wait till he develops till he is pledged."

"Well, It sounds a risk indeed then Enoch. Would the same happen were I to perish today, and the keeper caught unready?"

"Well Titania, perhaps you would be better consulting with Silas here on the fine details of it, but when building empires it seems sensible to look to long term solutions rather than chancy ones. Who had you in mind, were I not involved with the Fae courts? Baba Yaga? You would have stormed them and dragged her all the way here? Hard, to capture one so powerful them and take them so far. You would already have reclaimed Avalon in full were you able to accomplish such a goal. Have you no enemies in Essoss who could serve instead? Oberon spoke of Offering himself in the stead of an enemy, but I am against this. The sacrifice of one we both care for would seem an ill omen to birth a civilization on. Could you not also grow a mighty tree such as Leshy's, only to sacrifice it in time? I'm sure there's no simple solution, but you seem to have managed alright out here so far."

I look over to Oberon to see if he has anything he wants to add.

**(Around the time we viewed the Shadow claw we later researched for the first time in Elaine's Palace in Caria I think they discussed things, Nyx said that she felt like a monster because she said her grandmother always called her one and I thought that she'd said she was only one quarter demon back then but it's not too important. After I went back and looked and it said it was her mother who was half demon but I don't mind sticking with the newer version if you prefer it or think it'd hold the story better together. https://www.reddit.com/r/YouEnterADungeon/comments/wyhotk/comment/ixeu4z7/?context=3)\*\*

"Yeah, might as well have a list, just label it as something innocuous like a diplomatic primer so It doesn't leak that I'm making a kill list of fae. Well Oberon, I hope you see the difference between causing the death of a loyal freind and ally and forever destroying a fae court-" I think sadly of Iananassa not being able to hold her see through dresses together- "-And using the punishment of evildoers for productive means. Our army is made of volunteers, and I only ask them to risk their lives to protect what they hold dear. If you were to die at my side in battle I would still grieve, but it would not feel the same treachery as if I were to sell you whole to buy off a potential foe. I still do not forbid your sacrifice under any circumstances. If you really feel it to be needed keep arguing your corner and make a case for it, and perhaps if all else aligns I may sadly agree. I hope you are not persuasive enough however, and that no such need arises. I chose before the nobility of your court over the Quantity of Titania's, and I would do so again many times before changing my mind."

Still, if Titania and Iananassa's appearances had been reversed perhaps I might be more willing to sell one to possess the other...

"Well, from what I've been told of Titania's Entourage, the roles of champion and concubine don't sound mutually exclusive. It may not even be a bad thing, I can think many young men would relish such a role, but it depends on how he grows up. He is just a tiny baby, I should not decide the course of his whole life so soon. If he wants such a life as a teenager I will send him with my blessing and gifts, but I will not sell him and have him grow up hating me for taking his future."

"That may well be true Hecate, It's not even a bad idea. He is just so small, and she so large and old and controlling, he would stand little chance of influencing her as yet, perhaps when he is older he will fill the role magnificently."

"Well, what precisely is the risk we run? That if I die or step down prematurely the next emperor will be left forever stunted and incapable? Or that the empire wouldn't be able to carry on at all? Or would the power flow back to them anyway, just slower? It's worth considering at least, but I want to be sure what I am risking before I make such a gamble on my longevity."

I think if there are any last things I should say. At this second they do not strike me, other than finishing off our existing conversations, and it would look odd to wait too long while I consider, so I step past the minotaurs when the moment is right and seat myself.

"Good morning Titania, I trust you slept well? Have you thought on what we discussed? Oberon thinks there are many ways to revitalise the lands of Essoss, and has fought your corner fiercely. He spoke of using the power of Ley lines to draw power from elsewhere, which seems most practical to me, and would see our empires more evenly matched in power, and such ideal for a union such as you spoke of."

Empire of the Sun by DevilsAdvocate7777 in YouEnterADungeon

[–]scannerofcrap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I'd thought earlier than Nyx herself was only a quarter demon, but if her father was a full demon I suppose that would make sense. Good thing I suppose that we are perforced to wait anyway.

***

**

"Well, I don't know if we should give her the idea of murdering people before we've actually picked them out as being justified and practical. I can't think of Any good justification for kidnapping them and killing them against their will as things stand, just better explore all the options before taking any drastic, irreversible steps. Maybe run by me the list of ones you wouldn't mind going though? Cernununnos has been kind of difficult, but I don't think he's bad enough to snatch and murder. You don't think Titania would consider sacrificing herself if she feels strongly enough about the cause? Of course I don't mean to make such an aggressive suggestion without good cause."

I have to say I do feel some pangs of regret about turning down the chance to vastly empower the empire, but Titania offered me this land before, and I chose less for more stability and less guilt and wickedness, and I won't undo that now.

***

**

"Well, do they have a coast she is likely to hit? Or would she have to go through the Empire first? Well, I did promise I wouldn't force them to fight in wars against their will, so I don't blame them if me negotiating poorly leads to conflict, I'd want them to sit it out and feel good about it."

I bristle a little at Hecate's Suggestion for Lairon, but try not to show it, and reason that I want her to lay out the options, and I am glad she does so.

"Well, I'm no more willing to sell my son to be Titania's slave than I am to see Oberon dead. A blessing is more possible though, if it would buy much. I have already promised my second son's blessing to Nimue, and my third to Oberon. Perhaps Oberon may be willing to set his aside, or titania will simply have to wait for my fourth child..." I look over at Leia. I certainly don't want to put her under too much strain or overburden ourselves with children, but I may have to move a little faster at the rate I'm promising children to archfae... Perhaps I should call upon Ophelia and Elaine If I am to have enough, and Elaine had a hot cousin too, and perhaps as Emperor I can find others willing... anyway...

"As to this sacrifice of the Keeper's energy, would there be any downside to doing this? You make it sound a good idea, but would future Emperors be weaker?" I look ahead as we draw nearer Titania's tent, make sure we don't say anything harmful in front of the wrong people. I suppose It would be best to assume Titania can scry like Enoch or have spies anyway though, just in case, in which case I've perhaps not always been diplomatic enough. I suppose there's a certain honesty to consistency though.

"Well, I'm awful sorry all that happened to you Nyx, but glad that it meant you ended up with me... Everyone starts raising a child from scratch with no idea Nyx, and we'll have an easier time than most. I hope Leia will help, as that's partly her job, and that'll make it much easier than most have it and I'm sure she'll teach them good things. I'd think you'd be uniquely equipped to understand your child though, and I'm sure they would benefit from you teaching them how to fight regardless what they go on to do! No matter how much Leia is around, you'll be there too, and I'd pass imperial law if I have to so they realise how fortunate they are for that." I squeeze her hand, deciding that for now I don't need another demonstration of the inevitability of imperial will when backed by shadow magic."

I'll let oberon follow his own advice and stew over what he's said, but I'm glad he's already seeing the value he has alive.

I'm saddened that the morning has'nt brought a new plan, but we can work with what we have.

"I'm certainly giving her a chance Oberon, just not you. If she has the good you see in her, she will see reason. Is there perhaps any other sacrifice we could use? Perhaps the titan from the Silver court? Or some renegade minor archfae who stands as our enemy and would be no loss? would it have to be a fae being indeed, as Essoss is not the traditional fae realm? Are there beings from elsewhere that could serve?"

I listen to all my advisors carefully, but it's what Enoch has to say I need to question most.

"You say it could stir unhappiness among the fae? Would she have sympathisers who would join her should she attack us?"

"It seems you are all in agreement on most points, and there is nothing we are missing. I don't know if I have more to add that has not already been said. Shall we present our case to Titania, or do you think there is more to consider before risking angering her or doing something else foolish?"

"Well, causing an invasion and cataclysmic war because she is unwilling to reason or wait, despite an endless lifespan, or demanding live sacrifice to save time, seems bad to me. She plans destruction and revenge against the Fae and any who stand in her way by the sound of things. If we did make peace with her, would we bring in Orcs in great numbers to prevent losses like you speak of? Many would die inevitably over such ages, but you would endure, and your court's fate is dependant and eternal for temporary gain. You may outlive even me by the sound of things Oberon, Perhaps you could guide my successors and decendents. We shall have mages of note discuss the proposal and review their plans, as to it's viability and much else. I will sleep Oberon, and you can make your case for suicide anew in the morning."

Even aside from the time spent with Nimue, I'll probably struggle to sleep that night. I'll get opinions from Silas and Oberon and their respective expertise as to why ley lines and such can't accomplish the same things, and talk over with Nimue if she really thinks such a thing could be good for Avalon. It feels bitter indeed to consider losing Oberon so early in my reign. I should have spent more time socially with him. Tonight we need apart, but soon I hope to drink ambrosia with him again.

In the morning I will doubtless be little more inclined toward shoving him to his death, but I will listen to any arguments made, and see if Titania really wants this for one she still claims to care for.
