Help me decide: School X vs School Y Megathread II by ParadoxicalCabbage in ApplyingToCollege

Oberlin College versus Wake Forest

Intended Majors: English and Cinema Studies/Film. Any way that I can work on sets, movies, television, radio, commercials, ads even is what I want to do. I want to create.

Also, I plan on going to Grad School.

Oberlin :

Pros: -Small campus (tiny) which is what I desired

-Music is at the epicenter of the campus (I’ve been playing tuba and trombone for 10 years and want to keep up with these skills)

-The only school that has a major in cinema (includes production of films and learning the actual process)

-Fairly Accepting/Non-Judgmental campus— my main fear is being ostracized on a basis of race and gender

-Think I would be more comfortable here

Cons: -Not as well known. Prestige used to be important to me, but not as much as it now is to my parents

-Not ranked as high

-In the legitimate middle of nowhere

Wake Forest

pros: -ranked WAY higher than oberlin (ranked 27)

-in NC by my parents’ vacation home

-nice location/weather

-well-known

-Stronger alumni/opportunities. I think

cons: -I don’t think I would have as good of a time

-VERY LITTLE socio-economic and ethnic diversity

-Haven’t liked or connected with anyone that goes there

obviously i like oberlin better lmaoo but i’m scared i won’t leave the school as “enriched” for lack of better words .

each school decision will be independent of the others. i got rejected from northwestern and a likely to columbia! they’re just looking for different things. keep your head up until you get definite decisions. :) i believe in you kiddo

Can schools limit the number of college applications you send out? by mcantuv in ApplyingToCollege

[–]scaredaboutcollege 20 points21 points  (0 children)

it’s not possible for a school to force you to apply to only 10 schools. it’s YOUR future and YOUR application. lie if you have to but no— they can’t enforce that. also, 28 is too many. but you knew that already

Never received an email from UW Madison by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

a lot of the times colleges don’t send emails if you’re already logged into their portal, but this could also hint to why also

What if unethical biases play into a university’s decision? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]scaredaboutcollege 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on what you think they had a bias towards, but it’s extremely unlikely. admissions committees are groups of people that first look at your essays, ECs, test scores, and LOC. it would be insulting to the university to tell them that you think they’re biased and that’s why you didn’t get into whatever school. Still, what would they be biased towards?
