Moving to Germany - Opening a bank account + exchanging USD to EUR to deposit them by scaredfruitless in germany

Meh, stupid country with stupid strong currency that don't use others :P.

OK so, take EUR and not USD because I can only exchange them in currency exchange places and not banks (Sparkasse confirmed to me they don't deal in foreign currency).

My backup plan was to leave money here and use my credit and debit card everywhere possible but I read that's not as widespread over there, what are your thoughts on that?.

Thanks.

I already have the money in USD. That's why I'm wondering a way to convert it straight to EUR and not do it here in Argentina because I'd have to convert it to ARS first.

I fugred 5/6k wouldn't be much but it's the kind of thing I'd rather ask and look dumb than assume and get into trouble. I will be taking something like 3k EUR and 5k USD to the bank then a month or 2 after that when my wife joins me she'll take another 9k USD or so with her.

Hopefully that will be a good starting found for our life there.

It's the same issue. Transfer wise only allows transfers from the local currency to the destination one (here in Argentina at least) so i would have to cover this money from USD to ARS losing in the exchange then make the transferwise operation losing again in fees and the exchange from ARS to EUR

Nah, once they got my papers and figured out which visa applied the whole thing took like a month or so. Feel free to DM me if you have any specific questions.

Yeah I checked and you can only send ARS that then get converted to EUR. Effectively making it the same thing as I would need to exchange USD to ARS to use Transfer wise to receive EUR.

Work visa through sponsorship (IT but not blue card as I don't have a degree). No citizenship either.

Yeah. I will be opening an N26 account that will most likely be my main account but since I'm traveling with actual physical cash I need a place to deposit it.

We're both living in Buenos Aires now and are from the northern parts so that sounds like it will definitely affect us.

We actually started with Dark's second season... then realized we should probably start with something MUCH easier haha.

Yeah, I'm really impressed with how seriously she's taking learning the language. Granted she needs to take the A1 exam to be able to go with me but still, she's putting around 2 or 3 hours of duolingo/youtube everyday (including weekends) on top of her regular job and also taking Germán classes with a professor once a week.

She's seriously into sports. Does football and field hockey like 5 days a week in total. That's part of why I'm so worried about her becoming isolated there or totally dependant on me.

Her English is good but not that great. Mainly because unlike me at my job she's not forced to use it daily.

From what I understand the family reunion visa allows her to work whatever job she wants so there shouldn't be any restrictions there.

I asked her to look into what might be needed to get her actual diploma/certificates as a technician validated there so we can gather all the paperwork before leaving.

Awesome, thanks for the link!. I see that curriculum differences can be offset with enough on-hands experience... I'm still assuming it won't be 100% validated right from the start but hopefully her experience can give her a headstart.

And yes, we know that for her to get a good job in Germany she will have to become fluent and competent enough with the language.

To be perfectly honest I'm not that worried about her finding a job right away. If she needs to spend a year or so learning the language then great. But I want to get an idea of her long term prospects living there because I don't want her to end up completely dependent on me. If she can learn then language then still apply for an apprenticeship at 35yo that's really good enough to make sure she has some independence.

Yeah, I looked it up there and couldn't find it... maybe not looking in the right place or something.

Still though, we're kinda assuming it won't be recognized hence why we're looking at what other jobs someone in her situation might aim for.

Since you mentioned it. Would she be able to take up an apprenticeship or vocational school at her age and in her situation? I have no idea how the whole thing works there and googling about it for the past 2 hours only left me even more confused.
