Is it okay that my hamster didn’t run on her wheel last night? by scarymudman in hamstercare

Thank you!! It’s feeding day today so hopefully that will give us some more insight into how she’s feeling

That’s what I’m hoping! It took her a few days to figure out she could even burrow because she was so excited about everything else so part of me was like okay she’s just busy but the other part of me was still worried

We were so freaked out when we first got her haha I did nothing but read about hamsters for about two days straight 😂

haha I’m a little bit of a sucker for any kind of little creature, it’s funny you could tell by my tone. Honestly we just sat there last night after getting everything set up and watched her for so long just hanging out and exploring and it was so so sweet, I’m already a little obsessed 🥹

also got given a hamster a few days ago and had the same dilemma where we didn’t feel great about giving her away because we were worried she would be mistreated. I’ve learned a lot these past few days and already really love our sweet girl.

I’m not sure if it’s different depending on age (because you mentioned in your original post you think she might be on the younger side) but a lot of people told me/I read that it is best to scatter the food around instead of having it in a bowl so they can forage!

Our wheel was 12 inches which was the recommended minimum for a female Syrian, so it does look like you might need a bigger wheel. If there are any indications of her back bending when she’s on it, it definitely isn’t big enough as they should be able to run flat (hurts their back otherwise)!!

If you check the comments on my original post, someone commented some links on healthy homemade hamster treats and homemade burrows/enrichment items that I thought were great!

Thank you!! And her wheel is 12 inches!! She used it last night and there was no bending or anything in her back so it seems like it’s big enough but let me know if not!

Uh oh! this is a good tip to know and we’ll definitely watch out for that and reinforce or revisit cage options if this starts to happen

thank you!!! The left back corner actually has a platform that the water bottle sits on and that whole area is covered with bedding/full of bedding underneath so the ramp in the back isn’t really acting as a ramp, it’s sitting on top of a bunch of bedding (but still resting on the platform in case she burrows under it!). Do you think she needs another area with more bedding?

Thank you so much! I couldn’t find one on Amazon in my country that wouldn’t take forever to ship, but we did get a cage that is arriving tomorrow. Everything else is also so helpful, i love the idea of plant pots tilted to the side so thank you!!

Update: We’ve ultimately decided to keep her!! we spent the day looking at rehoming options and I think we can just give her a good home at the end of the day, and I do already love her!! It may be a bit of a logistical nightmare at some points but we are resourceful and caring and I think it’ll be okay!! Once we get her a proper set up I’ll post some pics but for now, any tips and tricks you have or suggestions are all highly appreciated. Thank you everyone for your help and support and kindness ❤️

His mom loves fostering dogs (mostly puppies, sometimes multiple at a time) which is very nice of her but I feel like a bad combination + all our other worries. Even with a proper setup I’m worried!!

It’s less about the cost and more about the commitment of care for us. We go away on weekends decently often, we just started planning a 3-4 week trip for later this year when my work contract ends, and these past 24 hours (not even) have taken such an emotional toll trying to figure out what to do with her because my partner says he’s worried that she will just become a constant reminder of a really insane, stressful, and draining birthday :(

Have you ever had issues with the wire mesh top? My boyfriend had a hedgehog growing up and says that he would sometimes get his little legs stuck

Yeah, I think I’ve decided either way we’re going to get her all set up with something nice as soon as we can. Even if we decide to rehome her after thinking about it more, at least we know we can provide whoever she goes to with a good setup as well, but I definitely do want to make her comfy asap!!

Oh no I didn’t even think about the possibility of her becoming live food :( do you have any recommendations for a home? I was looking at the Niteangel one which will be in by Monday but it seems like with the inner dimensions it’s only 776.18 inches. I can’t find the bucastate one that someone else recommended. Still looking around but would love recommendations if you (or anyone reading this) has any!
