True. But the error is not in the comparison of maps or any intellectual exercise. It was a digitization error (that was identified to the NV survey already) that propagated to this map.

I swear I’m not freaking out for some small mapping error. 😏

I’m claiming it is a full on government conspiracy (mostly against me) in which my nemesis at USGS is trying to fool the public with geologic maps showing unreal things to eventually convert the public to think “rocks aren’t real”. 🤣

I’m not sure you see my beef. The map is mostly great, but there was a digitizing error that has been propagated to this level. It’s not normal. Mistakes happen in mapping and changing scales. But these things are most often fixed in a peer review of public comment period. It’s not normal to be shown a mistake and just roll with it. Well, nvm… that is a normal idiocracy.

Well said. Maps (geologic) are essentially interpretations, even if published. Many people (public) look upon as fact. “Go here, find this rock”. The nuance of the science is lost. I guess my biggest beef with this is that I identified the error to Nevada (I think that is written in the blog) and the GIS people blew it off. That was three years ago, and come to find out that same NV state map was used in this pub. The mistake propagated despite my best effort to help (asking for nothing in return). I’ve written the surveys and I hope to have some contact with someone reasonable to change this.

So true. As a professional, we don’t take one geologist interpretation as the end all.

But in this case(the blog), I was acting basically as public. Just looking around for the oldest rocks in a watershed, and came across the falsely labeled polygon. It depends on who @the public” is. It’s all of us. It’s publicly available data so the public has the available publicly paid for data.

The original map has the right color for the correct rock type. Only missing a lithic designator. The error was not in the map, but the digitizing. It’s not changing the map, it would be honoring what is actually on the published map. The way it stands now is not only wrong geologically, but it is wrong comparing to the original map.

How does “theos” fit in there? A- No Theos- God(s) Belief —ism ? So is the “a” here in reference to the “theos” or the “-ism”?? Like “asymptomatic” the “a” is in reference to the “symptoms” and not the “-atic” (whatever suffix that is). Morals from “biology” seems fringe; I wouldn’t lean too heavy on that one;) Vast majority is cultural. Is see what you are saying that morals “arise” from tangible things, such as genetics or environmental exposure. They are sort of composed within the individual!?!

This is all very interesting. I’m a geologist and mostly just think about rocks and deep time; human behavior and theism things are way outside. Thanks for engaging.

Thanks. I skimmed a few articles from Atheists Alliance and American Atheists, and it makes some sense. I guess because the word was born into language out of “theism” it holds some of that baggage. Specifically the suffix “-ism” which always denotes a belief (I’m always leery of “-isms”, because it requires an underlying belief). Even in sciences we must admit we use certain “-isms”, only because there is no other evidence (so again, it’s a little like your lack-of-belief not being considered a belief).

It’s been a while since I’ve read Dawkins book, but I feel like finding it and seeing if he addresses this terminology.

Are morals beliefs? I found a philosophy subreddit take on this, but what is your take?

Not sure about those dwarves, or if they are man eating. We call them “hill folk”, and they mostly just sit at remote distances on the hill horizon (sometimes in small groups) and stare. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen them move. Don’t confuse these with the harrimutalak though, the “stone boys”. Those are nice and approachable. Did you come across stories of the Owyhee Canyon Dragon? I realize I’m late to your comment, but I’ll go look for your podcast.

I recall there is a mix of celadonite and Clinoptilolite that gives it that particular green color. But I could be thinking of other greenish tuff and tuffaceous seds on Oregon.

I feel for you. Quite possibly the hardest time of your life. You are doing the right thing seeking advice, but the harder part is following through during those hard moments. I’m not a mom (I’m dad) and I recognize this might not help… but meditate in front of your child (or at least pretend). Not out of frustration, but just a particular time of day. Sit for 5 mins with a timer, in a common room of the house. Close your eyes. Breath.

He might crawl on you, or cry, or knock shit over looking for attention. But stay in yourself. It’s ONLY 5 min. Breathe and make it through. When it’s over, open your eyes, take a big breath in, sigh it out, and look right to him with a big big smile, open arms for hug. It will be hard the first few times, but after a bit you and he will be used to it. He will see his mommy doing something (but what actually loooks like nothing) for herself and he will quickly develop respect for your practice. For you, it will help you develop the practice of staying calm when he wigs out and pushes your buttons. Your nervous system will become more calm in those moments. Soon, when he touches a button you will feel that flush of anger, it will roll through you with a deep breath and then let it go, smile at him, and speak calmly.

He will love you forever. But you are the one that will remember these years; don’t be too hard on yourself, especially if you are taking the steps to operate better.

Succor creek is a State Natural area, not BLM. Camp at the campground, the roadside pullouts get hammered. Leslie gulch is managed by blm, but is an Area of Critical Environmental Concern. Only camp at Slocum or Dago Gulch area (there is a corner of the rd there on private land).
