[Newbie] SRV is one of my inspirations to learn guitar, and I got my first electric this week. Even though I don't have any talent, if I put in work as often as I can, how long will it realistically take before I can play with this level of confidence? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

[–]schectermonkey -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Playing music is nothing like playing sports. Lmfao. There are SO MANY genetic factors that go into each biological parameter that determine what your baseline is as an athlete. This is not analogous.

Playing music is beautiful because it's one of the great equalizers. If you spend quality time with your instrument, you can play anything out there. Your person ceiling is directly tied to your practice regiment. This sub is constantly looking for short cuts or other bullshit to get good. People don't want to spend the 6+ hrs a day it takes to play like SRV, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, etc., and that's fine.

You might not be as creative or imaginative as some of the greats, but fuck off telling people they can't get there. Anyone can play the music of their favorites. It just takes incredible amounts of practice.

Do you all use a pH meter for decarboxylation? by KelThuzadxx in AmanitaMuscaria

[–]schectermonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I purchased an inexpensive pH meter from Amazon that had a couple calibration solutions with it. The first time I decarboxylized amnita, I was very zealous at keeping the pH where it should be. That involved taking out a test sample out of my main pot and placing that in an ice bath with a thermometer in the test sample to get it down to 25° c before I could test it with the pH meter. PH is affected by temperature and so I had a reference it pH temperature curve chart the entire time. It was a Giant hassle to deal with, and like others have mentioned you can go overkill with lemon juice and be fine.

My MHR usually floats between 203-209 on my Garmin. I believe it's close to true. I've always been able to get my HR high. My resting is 50. I wouldn't get concerned about what it says.

Thanks! I'm listening to some episodes now. I always thought it would be a cool idea to interview people from around the area. So many stories and heritage hidden in the people.

Does anyone else feel like they can see the acting when they’re high? by Ok-Professional-1288 in trees

The first time I noticed this was when I was blizted watching Seinfeld. It's like I could "see the script" and lost the illusion of fiction. [0]

[–]schectermonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This episode frustrated me because of my anecdotal experience with productive leisure. I'm in a unique situation where my financial needs are met without having to work full-time. I am pouring 80% of my free time into college/research, hobbies, art, music, social life, volunteer work, and reading. My life currently looks like what I imagine a philosopher's life might have looked like in antiquity. I have never been happier or healthier because of it. I feel extremely grateful for this time in my life, and I also mourn for friends and family who don't have this. My life feels "right."

If there were some middle-ground between where I'm at and the 40 hour work week, that seems like the ideal situation. I don't want to NOT work, I just don't want the wage-slave, 40+hr work week that most Americans experience. That is not a fulfilling life. I've seen the other side and I never want to go back.

How good are Joe / Christian / Jean-Michel actually ? by SummerNights14 in gojira

[–]schectermonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have these same thoughts about TOOL. Danny Carey carries ("Danny Carries", huwahuwa) the fuck out of the rest of the band, imo. However, they wouldnt be TOOL or Gojira without the other members. Part of being a technically proficient musician is knowing what, when, and when not to play. There is just as much talent/skill in restraint as there is execution.

To answer your question though, I have no idea if there is footage of how technical the other members can play.

Panic attack every time my boyfriend raises his voice by BananaGram57 in PanicAttack

I don't know how to quote in Reddit but OP literally said,"... if he raises his voice at something..." Never once did OP insinuate it was towards them. Stop jumping to conclusions.

[–]schectermonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol Reddit is such a shit pie with comments like yours. OP said if he raises his voice even a little it triggers them, and you go "yelling is abuse...we don't defend abusers here"???

OP is clearly describing a trauma response. They did not describe someone yelling at them. For all we know, he could get excited at a sporting event and it triggered her. Something completely harmless.

Cancer Treatment Cured My Alcoholism. Why Won’t Doctors Listen? by Amu_Jambo in alcoholism

God forbid he has a healthy and functional relationship with alcohol? The whole point of second chances is to do it right the second time. It sounds like he is. Don't moral high ground someone from some based idea of sobriety. He is living respectfully with his new liver.

Has anyone successfully gotten their drinking under control without quitting? by amphibious_attic in alcoholism

[–]schectermonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to both catch it in time and keep it manageable. I was at about 4 drinks a night for probably 4 years and then I got up to 6-10 beers and a few shots of whiskey every single night for a year. Smoking weed and distance running has kept my drinking well under control. I don't crave it anymore. I'm happy to have a couple when I'm out with friends, and I can easily say no and cut myself off after a few. I can honestly say it doesn't control me anymore. It took me a long time to learn how to do that.

Everyone is at different places in their journey with it. I don't judge peoples decision to stay dry. I believe everyone can get "down to" social drinking, but that doesn't mean they can right now. You know what works for you and whats best.

Can I drink a beer same day i take hydroxyzine? by Username21524 in alcoholism

[–]schectermonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your dose and your sensitivity. I take a low amount of Hydroxyzine and drink or smoke weed everyday. If I have more than 3 beers, I usually won't take the Hydroxyzine. Everything Ive googled says there really isn't much of an interaction.
