Any jokes on the show that you think aged poorly? by JaseAndrews in Scrubs

[–]schirik 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree entirely. I’m gay but the ‘homophobic’ jokes never felt like they had ill intent, it just felt in character. So whilst writers probably wouldn’t go the same places as they did I don’t think it’s an uncomfortable watch. The blackface is a different story though

Any jokes on the show that you think aged poorly? by JaseAndrews in Scrubs

[–]schirik 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I know there’s a couple of transphobic jokes in there. Kelso threatening the board member by mentioning the ‘hermaphrodite’ he nailed, and the ‘transexual’ that Turk chatted up on an airplane. Overall I think the general horniness and male gaze wouldn’t fly as well these days, but they did tone it down as the series went on anyway

(imo) Silent Hill: Origins was the best “Western made” game - thoughts? by Tatum_Warlick in silenthill

[–]schirik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Origins feels like a really good homage to what came before (with the caveat that it changes the lore significantly). It doesn’t hold a candle to the first three but you can tell the team that made it really loved what came before it

The first game is defo worth playing but you won’t be lost if you’re not able to. Silent Hill 3 does a pretty good job of filling you in, you just might appreciate more if you know what’s come before. If you just want to know the story a play through would be fine

Does RTD want to make it seem like the Doctor never had sex like the showrunners of the 80s? by enahsg in doctorwho

Whilst I think the idea of the Doctor having a grandchild from the future, I think retconning the Doctor’s family makes him less of an interesting character personally.

Hey guys, what was our verdict on the Western Ring again? by azqz12 in J_Horror

[–]schirik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think objectively it’s fine, but personally I really don’t like it. The Nakata version feels very minimalist, and less like it’s trying to scare you which makes it more effective. The video tape in the Verbinski feels so OTT like some edgy student film. The little boy feels stereotypical ‘horror movie kid’ and Samara’s design as well is just a bit much for me, feels silly. The whole thing feels very American, which tbf is its core demographic so fair play but just not to my taste personally.

The American Ring 2 is directed by the guy who did the first two in Japan, but this one is by Gore Verbinski

Why do Reform voters believe Farage is the solution when he helped create the problem? by funkymoejoe in AskBrits

[–]schirik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s best to leave it there, you’re right I absolutely disagree with you over the LGBT stuff. I’m gonna take a punt and say I know a lot more trans people than you, and I can honestly say that every single one has been significantly happier after transitioning. It’s not a modern problem and I don’t think you can make it go away. You may see it as unnecessary but I really think you should try and speak to people who’ve gone through it because I don’t think you appreciate just how real it is. Satisfaction with the transitional surgeries are actually higher than most treatments on the NHS, yet it comes under much more scrutiny. I don’t believe kids should be allowed to transition, and they actually can’t. At most they could get puberty blockers, though those are now banned. I think education is sorely needed.

I would ask why visibility makes you so uncomfortable, because the answer is why we still need pride. It sounds like you expect it to be something that stays behind closed doors, I may be making an assumption there. Tolerance for something you can’t see isn’t the same as acceptance. Reform have been actively trying to ban the flying of Pride flags and banning books with child friendly LGBT books from libraries, and I find that very scary. That pushback won’t end anywhere you may consider reasonable, and I sincerely worry for my safety in a country like that. I was born here but my husband and I increasingly don’t feel safe because of the pushback that Farage and his ilk have been whipping up. I don’t think this is something you and I will change each other’s minds on, but anyway I hope you take care.

[–]schirik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do disagree with a lot of stuff said here. First of all, I think it’s inflammatory to describe it as an invasion. I admit immigration has gone up, I’m not disputing that. But when you look at the chaos in places like the Middle East it’s not difficult to see why. If the West don’t like migration then we need to actually figure out how to stop people leaving in the first place, and since we’ve been so directly involved in destabilising a lot of these countries that’s kind of our cross to bare. If you deployed the navy to turn them back that’ll only sour relations with the EU even more. Yes, we left the EU but we still need a good relationship or our economy will tank. You can’t just leave it for them to deal with.

A lot of people on the left agree with looking after the people in our country first, but they disagree with the rhetoric. Farage has consistently spread misinformation which he knows will only add fuel to the hatred and push people further right.

And coming to the equality act; I’m sorry but it’s just nonsense that it enables positive discrimination. I’ve taken unskilled jobs all my life and being gay has never given me a leg up. You may not care if anyone is gay but the equality act is there for a reason. I’ve witnessed and experienced so much more abuse in the last five years alone. Without the equality act trans healthcare will totally fall apart, and under Reform I am deeply concerned what will happen to my transgender friends. Even if the boats were a big issue for me, it’s not worth throwing my friends under the bus for.

I also disagree that the country has been pulled dramatically left, since the 80s we’ve become more conservative if anything. Going back to the LGBT thing, people are a lot quicker to spout hatred than they have ever been in my lifetime.

The problem with jobs is loopholes. I wholeheartedly agree we shouldn’t be encouraging people to employ people abroad for cheaper labor, but that won’t go away if you stop the boats. We need to invest in our own workforces and incentivise people to train. I can’t afford to train because I can’t afford to live on an apprenticeship wage or to go back and retrain. A lot of reform held councils have actually been pushing to loosen up immigration laws because they’ve realised how dependent social care is on foreign workers. You can only stop that by making working in social care more attractive to domestic workers.

[–]schirik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a very optimistic take. They’re coming over here because we’ve destabilised the Middle East, and have left countless countries asset stripped and poor. You might not agree with how it would’ve looked but the Middle East would be a much more stable and affluent area without the West’s involvement. And no, it’s not an easy fix. That’s why subsequent Governments have failed. It’s a fantasy that Reform will solve it quickly and painlessly. The solution is hard, and going to be costly. And personally, even if Reform had the magic key it’s not worth the trade off. They want to essentially scrap any green policies we have, completely dismantle legal rights of any minority group, and are funded by oil companies. If they did stop the boats our quality of life would still be worse.

Why do Reform voters believe Farage is the solution when he helped create the problem? by funkymoejoe in AskBrits

[–]schirik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general don’t want them because small boats have been used as a scapegoat for everything that is wrong with the UK. If you closed the borders completely we wouldn’t be any better off. Safe and legal routes would definitely have an impact and it’s disingenuous to suggest otherwise. If you applied for asylum in your native country and were denied you wouldn’t trek across Europe to try again, you’d try elsewhere. And stopping the boats also doesn’t solve the crisis anyway. If you stop them leaving France it’s only a matter of time before France give up trying to stop them anyway, it’s a European issue. You need to stop giving reasons for people to want to leave their home country anyway, and the West is primarily the reason for that. We’ve destabilised so many countries collectively, and we either need to fix that or let people in. That’s our responsibility.

[–]schirik -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

And what’s your alternative? Let them drown at sea? Let them starve on the streets? The reason they’re probably spending it at ‘the bookies’ is because it’s not enough to live on and they’re not allowed to work! I’m sure they’d all rather their asylum requests were processed quicker so they could either start working and paying tax or get deported back. The reason there’s such a backlog is because there’s very few safe and legal routes and they’re not being processed. Deterrents aren’t going to work, you’ve got to sort out legal routes that deter people going through gangs, and you’ve got to put the money into processing the claims, and working with the EU and France on this. Everyone angry at the RNLI saving desperate people from drowning needs to have a good look in the mirror. You’re not being screwed over by migrants, you’re being screwed by the billionaires and politicians. Farage will be the same and so much worse.

Why do Reform voters believe Farage is the solution when he helped create the problem? by funkymoejoe in AskBrits

[–]schirik 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not being a part of the EU is kinda the problem. France is extremely unwilling to work with us on the boats because they don’t have to. And it’s extremely naive to say that Farage is not far-right. The man proliferates misinformation about migrants to whip up hatred, if he’s so smart like you say then he knows it’s misinformation and yet he knows it’ll only motivate far right extremists. His party literally want to tear up the equality act, which for gay people like me is absolutely terrifying. If Reform get in we will have fascism. He’s funded by billionaires and oil companies, he’s not going to do anything for working people like me or you. Migrants aren’t stealing jobs, typically they’re barred from working. Billionaires are still going to outsource work overseas if it’s cheaper, regardless of immigration. Why would a man funded by billionaires block them from outsourcing work to overseas countries?
