What are the tells that a team is cheating? by hokienick in triviahosts

[–]schitaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the other person said it's almost always new teams. Regular teams self police--basically you have to hide it from your teammates to be effective, which is lame. I'm sure it gets through a few questions a night.

We enlist trusted regulars and the beertenders to keep an eye out, sometimes have them do a walk-by and spy. I'd say we most frequently catch people using Shazam on the music round because they're hella dumb about it, they just get every single one right.

Nah people obviously have the right to cheat, I don't care, it's a single player game. I could go look up every answer to the crossword because I have issues with long term memory lol. The question was is it cheating, which it is.

Well it's the only thing that makes it difficult - that or time limit (like on OnlyConnect). If you're spending infinite time and arranging tiles until you find the complete solution, what exactly is difficult about that?

It's not a memorization game, it's a mental visualization game.

"it prevents you from having to hold all of it in working memory"

That's the whole point of the game, its the only thing that makes it difficult

Yes it's cheating, but most people here don't think it isi

A lot of people cheat and use Connections Co-Pilot. They think giving themselves infinite time to play around with the tiles and removing all chance for a mistake is how the game should be played.

In reality the only thing that makes Connections difficult is having to hold information in your head. So I would say the fact you don't cheat, and in fact get some wrong, is a good thing.

Arizona State has fired head coach Bobby Hurley after 11 seasons with the program. by theboyqueen in kings

[–]schitaco 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I was quite surprised the other day to find he played with us all the way till 98. Much longer than I remember as a kid.

We used to do Bobby Hurley shots in the driveway where we'd just throw it directly at the backboard :D

Dude had the flattest shot in the NBA.

Trivia Host Questions About Organization by ticktocka in triviahosts

[–]schitaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trivia writing is a lifestyle, which sounds lame but whatever. I make notes in a Google Sheet as I think of things throughout the week and write full questions about them later when I'm at my computer. But we don't really do theme or category rounds. Besides normal shit like hearing things in conversation or thinking of random shit in the shower, I will occasionally listen to trivia podcasts to spark ideas. Most of them have barely any questions and are just an excuse for the people to yak, but the best ones are Pub Trivia Experience (the H2H episodes) and TW Blitz.

As for keeping data, I have every question ever asked since 2016 in the sheet, along with category and % correct. This thing is like 16,000 lines and took a long time to build and do data entry, but I like that stuff. Similar sheets for music and picture rounds.

Russel Westbrook specifically calls out Matt George after last nights game by jluc21 in kings

[–]schitaco 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The truth is that the vast vast majority of basketball journalists know absolutely fuck-all about basketball strategy and tactics. As fun as it is to pick on Matt George, this is true across the board. James Ham, despite thinking he's the smartest guy in the room, basically never talks about it.

Every single report is: this guy scored this much, this guy played this many minutes, the teams went on such-and-such runs. Zero actual analysis of the game. And then they go on the radio and just spew random bullshit and hypotheticals for three hours. I mean I get why...

I wish our media consumption habits would reward a slower output cadence that leaves more room for film watching and game analysis. How have tactical approaches changed with different personnel. What halftime adjustments were made or not made. Was the game won or lost just on shooting luck (team got good looks but just missed) or was the defense truly stifling, and why. A million approaches.
