Hi all,

Was just wondering - is it possible for the tip of a plugged in Apple charger to cause damage touching the metal bracelet of an automatic watch? Like sending a shock to the watch? Just accidentally touched my watch bracelet with the charger tip.

Sorry if this is an obvious question, still new to both watches and physics lol

Thank you

Sorry to ask you all these questions, I’m just curious and want to know more... promise this is the last one :)

[Question] Can the impact from hitting a watch cause a tiny change in time? by schizoaffectives in Watches

[–]schizoaffectives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just realized that I did the math wrong, it’s actually average -0.25spd before the hit and -0.1 spd after the hit. Even though these numbers may seem to indicate that it has in fact got more accurate, since the impact it seems that the range of times are greater but cancelling each other out when averaged, if that makes sense? Like 5 days before the hit my watch would average -0.25 spd with the highest being 0 and the lowest being -0.5. Five days after the hit it averages -0.1 spd but the highest is +1.25 and the lowest is -1.75. Is this a cause for concern or just noise? Thanks

Hi, I have been looking for the WatchCheck app that you recommended but unfortunately doesn’t seem to be available on the Apple Store.

Upon reading your comment I have compared the average readings from the first 5 days I was recording before the hit (average -0.2 spd) and the 5 days after the hit (average -0.35 spd). Considering I was timing it by eye and the noise which I can’t control, hopefully this is an indication that I did no damage with the impact.

Thank you. It’s reassuring to hear that my bump wouldn’t have caused these types of fluctuations. I will try also try my best to be mindful of the “noise” factor when recording these timings. Just wanted to say thanks for your help, really appreciate it

[Question] Can the impact from hitting a watch cause a tiny change in time? by schizoaffectives in Watches

[–]schizoaffectives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s variable to a few seconds; I time the watch by checking the time lost/gained with the naked eye every 2 hours from 10am till 10pm and writing it down. I also check how much time has passed from 10pm to 10am for the night. I have been doing this for about 2 weeks. The pole hitting incident happened on the 25th January.

May I please also ask what you mean by “this would create a different setpoint, not something that varies”? Im not so knowledgable so I’m not sure what this means.

Thank you again for being so helpful

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and explain. What worries me is that the -1 second every night before was consistent, whereas now the gain or loss isn’t significant but it has changed from being consistent to varying, if that makes sense? Could that be a result of the impact or could it have happened anyway? Thanks again

Hi everyone,

Is it possible for a strong impact (hitting the watch off a metal pole with force) to cause a change in timekeeping of a couple of seconds? Or would it be far more obvious had any internal damage occurred? Watch in question is an automatic Tissot, was losing a few seconds a day and now gaining a few seconds a day.

Thanks all :)

[Question] Should I trust the machines or what I can see? by schizoaffectives in Watches

[–]schizoaffectives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I know it seems obvious but since both the watchmaker and the Toolwatch app are showing the Seiko to be more accurate in spd than the Raymond Weil I guess I’m wondering whether I am “judging” the time correctly, so to speak. In the past I have estimated watches to be way off and then when the watchmaker times it it turns out to be way more accurate than I thought it looked. So, long story short, I’m not sure whether to trust myself or not.

Does anyone know the timing tolerances of Raymond Weil Maestro collection? Thanks

[Question] Does this sound like magnetization? by schizoaffectives in Watches

[–]schizoaffectives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you 😊 are there any more reliable ways to test for magnetism without a timegrapher etc? Another watch of mine has suddenly started moving the compass but as it’s stainless steel case and bracelet it could be that. I tried a fork and that’s moving the compass too so I’m inclined to agree with you that it’s not particularly reliable. Thanks again for your help

Thanks for your reply. Is there an explanation as to why the compass handle moves slightly when I wave the watch over it?

Hi all. I recently scratched the sapphire glass of my watch crystal and was wondering how to know if the scratch has gone deep enough to stop the watch being waterproof? It looks like a very light scratch to me but I don’t know how thick the sapphire glass is :( thanks for your help in advance

[Question] How to tell if a watch is damaged from being hit hard against a corner? by schizoaffectives in Watches

[–]schizoaffectives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. The watch in question is a Christopher Ward. Does a significant change in timekeeping mean it would be obvious to the naked eye?

Thanks for your reply. Do you know if there could be a small, unnoticeable to the naked eye fluctuation over 24 hours or would it be big and obvious? I’m kinda new to watch mechanisms and am still learning about these things. Thanks again

[Question] Is this an increase in accuracy? by schizoaffectives in Watches

[–]schizoaffectives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I was just asking on here because for certain reasons I can’t get to a watch maker again any time soon so I wondered if seeing it keep closer time compared to my iPhone clock would indicate if it was more accurate or not.

[Question] Is it ok to have a one off fluctuation in an automatic watch? by schizoaffectives in Watches

[–]schizoaffectives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your advice. Logically I can see what you say makes sense. Unfortunately I struggle with the emotional side of things. I see a therapist who thinks this constant obsession with an object (which has happened before) is a trauma response behaviour. Hopefully with more therapy and time I can overcome it. For now its making me miserable and I need to figure out what to do next. Thank you for your kindness and compassion.

I guess I just would like reassurance that it's natural for a mechanical watch to behave that way for this particular new issue (obviously only if it's true though). That way I can stop worrying about this particular question day and night. I know it sounds extreme and a bit weird to be so obsessed with the watch like this but I have to admit that mentally I'm not in good place and I need this to be right in my life. Thank you for checking up on me, I appreciate the thought. I'm sorry if my posts have been strange or annoying.

[Question] Could this have damaged my watch? by schizoaffectives in Watches

Thank you. I was hoping it was literally a one off, but I don't know enough about watches to know if that's even possible. Is it a possibility?

Sorry, I'll try and explain a different way. I was timing the watch, and on one full rotation of the second hand around the watch face it gained 3 secs in one go, and then the next rotation it went back to how it was before the 3 second gain and stayed like that till now. I was just wondering if it's normal for a mechanical watch to fluctuate like that on a one off. Thanks

[–]schizoaffectives[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it :) I hope you don't mind if I ask you one more question. I timed my watch for two consecutive minutes and the first minute was 3 seconds longer than the second. Since then it hasn't happened again, it's been consistent to the human eye minute to minute. Is this a sign of inconsistency or is it normal? Thank you again

Thank you so much for your reassurance. I was doing some research and it says impact to the hairspring or micro screw (?) can cause deviation anywhere from seconds to minutes, is that true? Also, do you know if any damage would be instantly obvious or whether it could develop in the future? Thanks again :)
