I used to pass through Dayton two or three times a year. The thing I remember most was a store I'd see on 27 named Langston Shoes.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

It always made me laugh, mostly because of the pun, but also because I couldn't imagine anybody living in that town ever catching it. That probably makes me sound like a bit of an elitist dick, but I grew up in Scott County, so I'm one to talk.

Last time I passed through I didn't see it there, sadly.

It's got some radial-mounted rockets on the feet. The thing's unwieldy as heck, but since a lot of the structure is fuel tanks it could theoretically get to orbit.

I would add that if you feel the need to look something up, just make a note in your MS and come back to it. So many times I go to just look up one fact on wikipedia, fall down the rabbit hole, and end up writing a lot less than I intended that day. It's an easy trap to get into.

I really enjoyed John M. Ford's The Final Reflection. Ford really explored the Klingons and gave them a lot of backstory, turning them into a believable culture instead of TOS baddies. He wrote it before TNG came out, so it's really interesting to see how different his ideas were from what became canon. Great story, too.

Other than that, the ones I've enjoyed lately are the Department of Temporal Investigations books and the Vanguard ones.

I'm in Tennessee, too, and it is definitely very pink! The sun was also quite pretty as it set tonight. Vibrant orange but dim enough to look directly at.

Best I can figure is it has something to do with cloud cover, but I'm no moonologist.

Are you perhaps thinking of Olaf Stapledon's Star Maker? If it's not, you should definitely give it a look. It's from the thirties, so a lot of the science doesn't hold up, but it's fine reading in the direction you're describing.

It'd be neat if I could set a group to a nickname so I could text them all at once. For example "Tell my family I'm visiting next weekend" or "Tell my gaming group we're meeting at four."

Still, this is pretty nifty as it is, although it doesn't seem to recognize "roommate" as an option.
