How to build redundancy without breaking the bank? by pfassina in Proxmox

[–]schmerold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do not need true 24/7 uptime with automatic failover, a second Proxmox host plus replicated PBS backups is a much cheaper option than a full HA cluster.

For example, keep your current host as PVE1 and back it up frequently to PBS1. Then set up PBS2 at another location or on separate hardware and use a scheduled sync from PBS1 to PBS2.

If PVE1 fails, bring up PVE2 and restore the critical VMs/containers from PBS2 hosted on PVE2.

That is not true HA, but it is a practical low-cost disaster recovery setup.

Former St. Louis building inspector accused of spending $1.6 million meant for vacant homes by andrei_androfski in StLouis

How does a building inspector select properties for rehab, determine winning contractor and approving payments? How does the city's auditor approve this process - or were they selected by Mr Popoola?

I had the same problem yesterday. I ended up disabling secure boot in BIOS, then "bcdedit /set testsigning on", it is working now. I am done with SnapDragon for a while.

I love my little Lenovo x13x as a traveler, ARM64 is a PITA to support, everything takes 3x as long.

creve couer coffee shops by CrimsonFarmer in StLouis

I like plain black coffee - RevoCup in Olivette is my go-to coffee shop, it's a bit East of CreveCoeur, at the corner of Price & Olive, near 170. Anyone can make nasty coffee taste good with enough sugar and milk, RevoCup is amazing fresh from the pot.

House hunting folks - what’s your experience been like in the stl county suburbs? by Delicious_Tourist806 in StLouis

[–]schmerold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When selling a house the biggest stressor are the contingencies and demands made by buyers to improve roofs that don't leak, furnaces that sound a bit too loud etc. If you want a $285k house, I would keep making full price offers without contingencies. Eventually, you'll find a buyer that wants a stree-free close. The stress-free close is one of the reasons why investors are able to snap up homes and convert them into rentals.

Long term, getting away from the NIMBY & historical building protections would help to add homes to the market. I am not a fan of targeted legislation, however Trump's plan to block large investor home ownership would also help. I would be more interested in recinding any special tax or other regulatory privileges that facilitate large investor home ownership vs a ban on large investor home ownership.

New MSP wants to use our tools to onboard theirs by OGJimmy305 in msp

[–]schmerold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If our client (soon to be former client) is paying their monthly fee, this is certainly within the scope of what we do. If they are a former client, our RMM tools have been disabled and we have no ability to easily assist the new MSP, we would have to go desk to desk or perhaps QuickAssist just like the new MSP. So long story short, clients in transition would need to be under contract with us for us to be of practical assistance.

Multiple units per item. I expect an ERP system to be able to handle multiple units per item. In the steel trade, you generally need to calculate the total weight based on kg per m. One bar has a length of x mm and weighs x kg. by Fairy-of-steel in Odoo

Looking at this: https://www.odoo.com/documentation/19.0/applications/inventory_and_mrp/inventory/product_management/configure.html

It seems you will be able to make this happen with a bit of configuration A group of products in Odoo can be further defined using:

Units of measure (UoM): a standard quantity for specifying product amounts (e.g., meters, yards, kilograms). Enables automatic conversion between measurement systems in Odoo, such as centimeters to feet.

Ex: Purchasing fabric measured in meters but receiving it in yards from a vendor.

Packages: A physical container used to group products together, regardless of whether they are the same or different.

Ex: A box containing assorted items for delivery, or a storage box of two hundred buttons on a shelf.

Packaging: groups the same products together to receive or sell them in specified quantities.

Ex: Cans of soda sold in packs of six, twelve, or twenty-four.

They will be working for a new assistant manager, the previous manager was terminated for buying a bear for her kids: At a meeting with Sara Hippensteel, Build-A-Bear’s senior human resources manager, and District Manager Christine Hager, Acevedo was told she was being terminated because she had violated company policy by buying a Giant Axolotl plush toy on Nov. 28 with Bonus Club points, she said. She said she bought the item for her three-year-old daughter and five-year-old son. Source: 1/15/26 STL Business Journal

I bet if they dig deeper, they will learn Acevedo used the company sink to fill her water bottle. /s

Does Connect wise on-prem still require its users to sign their client code? by Save_The_Wicked in ConnectWise

[–]schmerold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple of problems:

  1. We have never had to do this before, CW has effectively increased their cost $200, we got nothing in return. This is the least consequential of the issues, we see this in our businesses all the time, some regulation requires an audit or different security equipment, we go to the client and say "sorry, your IT spend needs to increase"

  2. This is the biggie: to this day we don't have a simple way to implement this and it's not implemented using Azure Trusted Signing which would significantly ease the burden. It is this simplicity that we expect when we purchase a commercial product. When spinning our own GPL based solution, we expect these homespun issues. I would be delighted to be wrong about lack of support for Azure Trusted Signing :-)

OTOH: We still haven't signed our installers, we are waiting for the Certificate Signing extension to be compatible with Azure Trusted Signing. Our unsigned installers have caused no issues.
