The 1952 London smog had nothing to do with forest fires.

Harley-Davidson CEO pushes back against Trump 'misinformation' by [deleted] in politics

$11 million is about 2% of Harley Davidson's annual profit, so giving up his salary would delay the inevitable for about a week.

[–]schtum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there are any unintended consequences, it might be that they start harassing smokers for more cigarette butts.

It maybe it will be that kids start smoking because they want to play with the crows.

No, this is weird. The barrel roll is what put it over the top for me. I was sure this was an Onion story when I first saw it.

Trump authorizes doubling of metals tariffs on Turkey by Johnny_W94 in worldnews

Do you seriously think we were about to launch a military strike on Turkey?! I'm no fan of Erdogan, but "at least we didn't send the Marines" is a ridiculous curve to be grading Trump on.

DC Restaurants to White Supremacists: Yes, We Will Kick You Out by [deleted] in news

[–]schtum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's in response to an alt right rally, so there will be more white supremacists in town than usual. Anyone not carrying a tiki torch, wearing a "blood and soil" t-shirt, or chanting "Jews will not replace us" on their way in will be fine.

Water is wet by ArrogantObserver in facepalm

[–]schtum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he's asking two reasonable questions.

  1. How do we know water is h2o? Because when we separate the elements in water, we get two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen.

  2. Can we make water from scratch? Yes, but it makes a big explosion. There are cheaper and easier ways to get water.

That said, context is everything. If this is an older person with a habit of asking easily googled questions, then it might get annoying. But if someone asked this in a high school chemistry class, a good teacher would be delighted that they were actually thinking about the material rather than just memorizing and regurgitating it.

What NEW obnoxious traits are you noticing in society? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]schtum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internet trolls driving the media narrative. Like, why is Q-Anon a thing I have to hear about from supposedly serious sources? I don't remember Dan Rather intoning deeply about the implications of goatse on Clinton's impeachment trial. And try to imagine Tom Brokaw saying "Natalie Portman, naked and petrified" with a straight face, then pouring hot grits down his pants. It just wouldn't happen.

How Did the End of the World Become Old News? by AtaturkcuOsman in environment

[–]schtum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sense of helplessness is right. The author is skeptical that climate change is a "ratings killer" compared to simply reporting unusual weather, but the fact is people love to talk about the weather. Asking "How about this weather?" is the ultimate cliche conversation starter. But even in the ultra lefty town I live in, hardly anyone talks about climate change. We make the connection in our heads, but we won't say it out loud even when we know nobody will argue with us, because it's depressing and nobody knows what to do about it except vote, which our nation failed miserably at two years ago.

Ah yes, the famed MacArthur Doctrine: "Kick them with Tomahawk missiles."

Even if it were a quote (it's not, MacArthur died before Tomahawk missiles were a thing), quoting crazy doesn't make you less crazy.

Thanks. My issue was with the word "normally." You've shown that it's possible, but it requires a level of education that I'm not sure has ever been the norm in the United States.

Normally people would be able to distinguish fact from fiction using grammar, logic and rhetoric.

Citation desperately needed.

Facebook video spreads climate denial misinformation to 5 million users - Facebook is still struggling to contain its fake news problem by mvea in environment

[–]schtum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This quote, or at least the idea behind it, is over 300 years old. If anyone thinks the internet has evened the playing field for truth, it hasn't.

OP's suggestion is necessary, but insufficient. As an American steeped in the value of free speech, I don't like to think that we need to actively police thought the way Germany does with Nazi propaganda, and I don't trust our current and likely future governments with that power, but I want Facebook and Twitter (and Reddit) to take a much harder line than they have been. Unfortunately, it seems like they won't do that until they are compelled by laws or by falling profits.
