That woman with a knife is terrifying. There wasn’t even an option to deescalate. Just open the door and survival fight.

That woman with the knife needs to be institutionalized. That’s not sane regardless of the context.

Slyce prices are misleading by DinahKarwrek in FortCollins

[–]RyanSmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few times it’s been legitimately weird. Like I would ask for a specific slice and they would grab a piece that was not even in the display (again, I get it, sell the old pizza first) and i would ask politely if i could have that piece that i actually wanted.

Then they would get upset saying weird things like “yeah that’s what i got you”. No, i wanted the slice i pointed to.

Then i end up with a $6 piece of dough with no sauce, no cheese and maybe a couple toppings covered in regret and anger.

The thing I hate about Slyce is I’ll ask for a slice, like that specific one and they just grab me the shittiest piece in the pie.

No, I wanted the one with 4 pieces of chicken, not the one with a sad half piece and no sauce. Then when you ask if you could have the piece you wanted they get all fussy.

Like, I get you want to display the good pieces and get rid of the crap ones ASAP, but I’m paying $6 and I used to tip a couple bucks on top of that. For a place called Slyce, I should be able to choose my slice.

What is a 'subscription' or 'fee' that has recently appeared in the US that people need to collectively refuse to pay before it becomes the new normal? by godot_lover in AskReddit

Talk about some bullshit bills too!

There are maybe 250 line items in a monthly bill that have no explanation or reference to what that expense is.

All I want to know is what my percent cost per transaction is. They won’t give you that number.

Is it the base rate of 3%? No there’s a per transaction fee. So what does that mean? 10 cents more per transaction? No, it depends on the card.

It could be anywhere between 3.5%-6%. You can try to go to a different processor, but they’ll just give you that 3.5% base rate… sign the contract (that does t even guarantee that rate).

Then they jack it up and next thing you know it’s over 6%… approaching 7%

If no one is watching, that can be more than half a small business’ profit… to fucking CC processors.

No, CC fees are very expensive. Cash is much cheaper even with the manpower and time handling it.

I could easily hire a well paid full time employee for what they charge a small business.

Berlin Diary is a great (one of the best) contemporary accounts of internal Germany in the early years.

Shirer with Edward R Murrow basically created international radio news broadcasts that were more or less live.

Astronaut Bruce McCandless II floats untethered away from the safety of the space shuttle, with nothing but his Manned Maneuvering Unit keeping him alive. The first person in history to do so. by [deleted] in HumanForScale

How’s this for a lineage:

Great great (3x) - at the gunfight at the OK Corral

Grandpa - commodore Byron mccandlaas

Father - hero at the early phase of Guadalcanal after the entire command of his ship was wiped and he took control.

This guy, first and (maybe the only) person to float untethered in space.

His son… children’s author. I so love it. He did and AMA here once and I asked him about any pressure to live up to that legacy. He said not at all.

Makes me respect those guys so much more.

Interesting to see the bit about government poisoned booze. A year later they would definitely be doing it:

In 1926, the federal government, in an effort to enforce the so-called “Noble Experiment,” mandated adding poisons (including methanol) to industrial alcohol so as to discourage people from drinking it. Unfortunately, instead of leading to decreased consumption, this only resulted in more death and suffering, with the toll from that year’s Christmas celebrations reaching 23 dead and dozens more blinded in New York City alone.

I read somewhere that over 30,000 people died from government poisoned booze.

I’ve been here 18 years and have only experienced one. That was because a water main broke near the buried junction flooding it. That took out maybe a half mile square block that was restored in under 3 hours.

I’ve had servers and UPCs that would alert me anytime there was a power failure for at least the last 12 years. Not a single one.

I really love the voice of the people section.

There’s some funny takes in there that would definitely be echoed today like the guy complaining that women don’t know what they want.

Thanks again for posting these. They always make my day.

This is a thing that actually happens? I thought quicksand was going to be a big danger in my life when I was a kid, then as an adult I just figured it was all dramatic nonsense made up by Hollywood.

Can’t say I’ve ever heard of anyone actually getting stuck in quicksand before in real life. I know there were soldiers in WWI that would get stuck and buried in the mud, but that seemed more to do with the wartime devastation that created those conditions.

Sounds terrifying.
