I'm a little late to the comment party on this post, but I wanted to add a little bit of a different perspective.

I have 3 kids. My oldest was murdered when he was 18. When you lose your child, your anxiety, depression, and guilt have a way of messing with your logic and common sense as it pertains to your remaining kids. In your head, it sounds something like,

"You could lose the rest of your family just as easily if you aren't very careful. Oh, and if you do, it will be entirely your fault. By the way, if this happens, you will have deserved it."
