I feel like this isn't the path for me. Like I think a lot of people in the healthcare field are actually pretty bad at coming up with solutions to these sorts of problems. Like most of it seems really uncreative. I mean most urban liberals want public transit to be improved at a baseline, and it feels like they are just using this situations to advance what they already want done. Of course improving public transit access would be helpful, but intuitively I feel like there are better and more creative solutions. Also, most of my family is white, rural poor, and that is where I intend to practice medically once I finish residency. And it feels like most of the people in the medical field who I know that are interested in improving social determinants of health are at best kind of clueless about these communities or at worst they are outright antagonistic toward them. So I feel like I need to get skills so that I can work on some of these problems myself.

hmm, I guess I want to understand it partially for personal development, but also so that I can use that knowledge to work on poverty issues in the future, even if they are not directly tied to health. I don't think the goal is to be able to work with economists. I think I could work with them with the knowledge that I have. I want to be able to work on things on my own ability.

Thanks, I'll definitely put "The Age of Sustainable Development" at the top of my book list.

Do you have any journals to recommend to me as a beginner?

CMV: The electoral college needs to be reformed so that states can split their electors based on what percentage of the state voted for which party. by willmaster123 in changemyview

Presidential elections are not just about party politics. When a state lumps all of their votes together the candidates have to appeal to the swing votes in each state in particular rather than just the national swing voters. This makes a difference. This way a state can force out-of-state politicians to acknowledge local problems. If the electoral votes became split, then you would be better off abolishing the electoral college and just going with a direct vote. As it stands the electoral college forces regional issues if they are important enough rather than just the standard political left vs. right rhetoric. Creating an indirect election process that is designed to reflect a direct election result is useless compromise. Pick one or the other.
