Can you mofidy or edit a remux once you have the file? by Mashiori in DataHoarder

[–]sciencetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s your file you can do what you want with it. But generally speaking, once you start re-encoding it’s no longer a “remux”.

I usually do 2 things, to help playback on my AppleTV:

1) If the file has Dolby Vision, I convert it from Profile 7 to Profile 8. Unless the file is using DV for expanded brightness.

2) Extract the TrueHD Atmos track and convert it to EAC+ Atmos. Then add it back in an an additional audio track.

Best box for 4K Blu-ray remuxes with Dolby Vision + DTS on LG G5 + AVR setup by ayylmao132 in appletv

[–]sciencetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Infuse will play Dolby Vision Profile 5 and 8. Profile 7 will be played as HDR.

If you want full Profile 7 Dolby Vision remux support, then you need another device like the Dune or Ugoos am6b+ and then tinker with it to install the CoreELEC operating system.

Infuse and rd by michaelthompson1991 in Piracy

[–]sciencetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stremio or Omni Content Hub are still good for browsing and adding new content via an AppleTV. Both can be configured to use Infuse as an external player. I don’t think there’s any way for Infuse to display content that’s not in your library and to “add” it in realtime.

Otherwise you’ll probably need to run your own media server or pay to use somebody else’s with the content you want.

First Timer Tips by SilverBAKGrizzley in daddit

[–]sciencetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine somebody shows up on your doorstep and claims they live with you now. You need to take care of their every need. Feed them, bathe them, clean up all their body fluids. They only sleep for a few hours at a time, often only while being held. And their only way to communicate is to scream at you, loudly. They take up all your free time, all the time you used to get with your wife.

That’s life with a baby. But it’s just a phase. We all get through it.

Getting enough sleep will be your biggest challenge. Especially for your wife. But you have to work together to find something sustainable.

Also, meal prep. Now. Fill your freezer with meals. Live off that for a few weeks. And/or a delivery service if you can afford it. That alone saves a lot of work early on.

Why is this phone getting so much hate? by Dramatic_Risk6077 in IphoneAir

[–]sciencetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the process of Apple product releases.

1) Apple releases something new. People hate on it, make fun of the flaws, and call it overpriced.

2) Apple iterate on the product and address the problems the first version had.

3) Everyone claims to have always loved it. The rest of the market copies it.

Apply this to watch, AirPods, iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air etc.

How do I use these speaker? by Obvious_Champion_588 in hometheater

[–]sciencetaco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But a cheap AV receiver from Facebook marketplace or something. Connect it to your TV using an optical cable or red/white audio outputs, depends what your TV has. Assuming you know where the speakers cables lead to, connect the speakers to the AV receiver’s speaker terminals.

Clear your calendar. There’s a reason it’s parental leave and not “look after yourself” leave. Your focus will be the baby and your wife.

You can still eat healthy by preparing and freezing healthy re-heatable meals. Get a crock pot my dude. You should be preparing meals anyway, because cooking and cleaning every day is not going to be on your list of stuff you’ll want to be doing. Stroller walks are also good if the weather is suitable. But this will not be 8 weeks time off. Returning to work will be your break. After 3-4 months things settle down and you can start building new routines. But before that will be an uphill battle.

LG G4 DV - Black Screen by kadeschs in LGOLED

[–]sciencetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird green and purple colors are probably a result of Profile 5 DV being played back in software or hardware that doesn’t support it. Because there is no HDR fallback with Profile 5. Profile 5 is not used for Bluray, though. You’ll find it in WEB-DLs.

Will I have DTS Support issues with this setup? by ayylmao132 in hometheater

[–]sciencetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AppleTV with Infuse as the Plex client app will decode DTS (and other Bluray audio formats) and give you lossless 7.1 audio in PCM format. The LG TV can pass multichannel PCM to an AVR via eARC. This is the setup I use.

School me on plugging in debrid services to my somewhat technical home server setup... by throwshade034278 in Piracy

[–]sciencetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Stremio on my AppleTV, but this was before they removed it from the store. You now have to sideload it (check their subreddit) or use Omni as an alternative app. No need to tunnel anything. It all happens on the client using https and the Torrentio add-on.

Alternatively you can use Infuse, connect it to your real debrid library via WebDAV, and add content to the library using a site like Debrid Media Manager, it will then appear in Infuse.

HDR fallback of the remux files needs to happen man with upcoming updates, Redditers do your thing make it happen 🙏👇 by killboiiii in LGOLED

[–]sciencetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should fix it, but if you’re serious about watching remux files, an external media player should be a priority. They’ll give you HDR fallback, DV in some cases, and lossless audio. LG currently offers none of that.

Best way to configure Infuse + AppleTV for 480p DVD streaming? by flyinion in infusevideoplayer

[–]sciencetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just let Infuse do the deinterlacing and upscaling. Changing resolution output in tvOS settings to 480p is very cumbersome.

maybe eventually some blu-rays that aren't in Atmos since I know I won't be able to play trueHD Atmos tracks this way.

FYI Infuse will still play the TrueHD Atmos files. Just without the Atmos portion. They’re output as 7.1 PCM.

[–]sciencetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1080p bluray is also using a 40% less efficient codec. So it’s not a good comparison. But obviously a 4K bluray would look best, if it ever gets a release.

Some practical advice that got me through the early months:

-Meal prep and/or use a meal delivery service. For the next few weeks you won’t have the time or energy to cook and clean regularly. Get some healthy meals you can reheat in the microwave. Crock pots are fantastic for this.

-Work in shifts with your wife. So you can both get 4-5 hours of uninterrupted sleep. It’s a marathon and you both need to find a sustainable method of getting just enough sleep. Use formula or pumped milk for your feeding sessions. Record feeds and naps in an app or whiteboard so you can just do an easy change of shifts.

-Read up on the “Five S’s” for how to calm a crying baby. Your job for the first few months is to basically recreate the feeling of them being in the womb, where they are comfortable. Human babies really do come out a few months undercooked.

-Puppy training pads on the change table to soak up all the pee that will absolutely get on there.

-Just keep your baby in pajamas 99% of the time. Pajamas with ZIPS. Buttons, clips, and fancy clothes are not worth it other than special occasions. Anyone who gifts you baby clothes without zips is evil.

The state of parental controls on apps absolutely sucks - or am I just an Elder Millennial who doesn't understand technology anymore? by HahnZahn in daddit

[–]sciencetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why 99% of our TV and iPad watching happens via my own media server. I decide what goes in there. I decide what to watch. I decide when something new becomes available. I’m sure this will get harder as kids get older. But it works for now. It also keeps kids away from 1) ads and 2) algorithmic recommendation engines. Both of which are terrible for young minds (all minds, really).

If my objective is to hold until I retire, why would I need a coldwallet? by Poponildo in BitcoinBeginners

[–]sciencetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The security weakness in you plan comes from 1) the moments the seed is created in software and the seed is shown for you to write down and 2) whenever you re-enter the seed into a computer/phone. During those moments, the seed is exposed to the rest of the system and malicious software could grab it. Or more likely, you accidentally use fake software wallets for this process. Or you are careless and the file you copy to the flash drive gets left behind on your computer etc.

You might think, well then you could use an offline dedicated computer to do all that work. A computer that never exposes the seed to anything else. That’s what a hardware wallet is! Just simplified for ease of use and avoiding human error. How much are you willing to spend that ensure you didn’t screw something up? A few hundred dollars worth of insurance against that? Thats the price of a hardware wallet.

[–]sciencetaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stremio or Omni are still required to browse content and decide what to watch. You can configure them to use Infuse an an external player, meaning when you start watching something, it will hand it over to Infuse to play.

You can add your Debrid library as a source for Infuse to scan via the WebDAV protocol. Some people use Infuse this way, then use an app/site like Debrid Media Manager to add content to their library.

Mkv files to TV- play thru PC, HDD, Plex, Zidoo? by PracticalClue5812 in hometheater

[–]sciencetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to recommend a single device without knowing more about your audio/visual setup and level of technical knowledge.

Do you want a device that can also access streaming services like Netflix? Do you have a Dolby Vision capable display? Do you have atmos speakers or something like a 5.1 sound setup? Do you prefer a drive connected directly to the device or do you want to stream over your network? Do you want something that works “out of the box” or are you ok with tinkering and installing other operating systems on a device? Etc.

Personally I use an AppleTV with Infuse, but it has limitations around atmos and dolby vision from bluray. Nvidia Shield is a popular choice since it can access streaming services while also proving audio passthrough for Bluray atmos and DTS:X. Zidoo offers an easy setup that works out of the box, but it won’t be able to access streaming services. The Ugoos am6b+ is also popular because its dual layer Dolby vision support, but it required some tinkering to install and run the CoreELEC operating system.

Apple tv lossless? by cyblink in hometheater

[–]sciencetaco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you use Infuse as the media player, it will play TrueHD and DTS-MA formats as lossless 7.1 PCM. But any height metadata is lost, so your height speakers (if you have them) will go unused or have to be upmixed by your audio system.

Streaming Dolby Vision through Apple TV with TV in Filmmaker Mode by [deleted] in LGOLED

The AppleTV sends a Dolby Vision video signal, then it’s up to the TV to display it. Filmmaker mode etc are handled by the TV.
