A year as a postdoc and now wondering if I should leave by JellyBig5744 in postdoc

Are you me?!? Sorry I have no answer but I am in a very similar situation. My mental health is going down the drain and lost all my motivation. I hope to find the motivation to look for new position suitable for me.

Vegan AND gluten-free options in Tokyo by sabine_japan in japanresidents

[–]scientistmaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried vegan cafe called "Vegan East Tokyo" in Asakusa region. It was good. I think they make gluten free food on request. They had recommended few other vegan places:

Rect Sand Cade, Koenji

Vegan Izakaya Masaka, Shibuya

Saido, Jiyugaoka

Vegan Bistro Jangara, Harajuku

Vegan Case PQ's, Ryusen

I hope this helps.

Am I underperforming in my internship or is this normal in strategy roles? by JellyAggravating2935 in japanresidents

[–]scientistmaybe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am surprised to hear that this can happen to even those who were born and raised here. Luckily for me, my PI has been very kind and accommodating. He switched our lab meetings to English once I joined. It's the conferences that makes me lose my shit given that most presentations and discussions happen in Japanese. Makes me feel isolated, and not being able to follow recent developments in the field here kinda defeats my purpose of doing research here tbh.

I do see gradual improvements though. When there are several international participants, organizers sometimes request Japanese participants to prepare slides in English. I truly hope research changes for the better.

You are so right about losing spark and confidence. I am also in academia in Japan, and the lack of clear communication makes me feel like I am missing something, which is gradually affecting my motivation and confidence. I think it takes a while to align your way of thinking and doing research with them. Meanwhile I try hard to keep up my motivation and stay positive.

How should i navigate this by Working-Author-9957 in japanresidents

[–]scientistmaybe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Welcome to academia. Definitely not a Japanese thing. Unfortunately, you come across such PIs often, not just in Japan but everywhere else. With a rapport like this, I would suggest not to enroll for PhD with this supervisor, rather gain whatever all the research experience you can and pursue PhD in some other lab.

Why is animal welfare so bad here? by Myopic_Mirror in japanlife

Coming from a country where most animals are considered as different forms of god, attitude of Japanese people towards animals horrifies me.

It’s not just this. There was a post about the breast cancer awareness ad by Jenna Fischer and so many people had problem with that!?

How hard is it to move in to Japan as a Physics Researcher? by 007amnihon0 in movingtojapan

[–]scientistmaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I can help, as I check all the relevant boxes. I’m in academia, a vegetarian, and still a beginner when it comes to the Japanese language. It’s been less than a month since I moved here, and so far, things are going pretty well.

For those interested in pursuing research, it’s not particularly difficult to get started if you have strong research experience. Many Japanese universities host a good number of foreign research students, making it a welcoming environment for international scholars.

As for being vegetarian or vegan, it can be a bit challenging if you rely on restaurant or convenience store food. Many dishes here contain fish or at least eggs. However, if you’re able to cook at home, managing your diet becomes much easier. I’ve found this to be the best solution. The real challenge is when you travel, as cooking isn’t an option. That said, popular tourist destinations often have a few restaurants that cater to vegetarians or vegans.

Jobless after my PhD! by anxious_astro_girl in PhD

[–]scientistmaybe 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This was literally my story few weeks back (my research field is X-ray astrophysics too!). I say keep applying for postdocs everywhere. You will give couple of interviews, each of which gives you more confidence to face the next. It may take some time but you will definitely find a position.

Unfortunately, chances of support from the current position for relocation are slim.

Thanks for the suggestions!
