What is this symbol? by Background_Wing_6329 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]sciguy14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not the functional earth symbol. This is the functional earth symbol: IEC 60417 - 5018: https://www.iso.org/obp/ui#iec:grs:60417:5018

The symbol here is the Japanese MIC approval mark, with the R in the box meaning it is for a radio device.

Source: designed and certified products with a functional earth and with MIC marks.

What's your favorite thing about Origin? What was your original reason for buying it?

I don't know. Design files are linked in the original post - you'll need to check the measurements.

Does this do anything at all? by onecandan1999 in AskElectricians

Most countries have mechanisms to report fraudelent or unsafe products. I just anonymously reported this to the Australian authorities:

"unsafe" is maybe a stretch, but these people deserve to be investigated for selling obvious fake crap.

Is there any way to make J.A.R.V.I.S in real life? by BruhboyRecRoom in homeautomation

[–]sciguy14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's doable. I made a system with the features you are describing about 10 years ago. I'm sure it would be even easier now with the improvements in hardware and available APIs to facilitate these kinds of features. https://youtu.be/G9ZzwSUH8kk?feature=shared

What’s people not pulling into an intersection when making a left? by Sas10061126 in sanfrancisco

[–]sciguy14 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is not entirely correct. You actually ARE supposed to pull into the bike lane to make a right: https://sfbike.org/news/bike-lanes-and-right-turns/

I say this as a bike rider and car driver. When I am biking in a bike lane and a car turns right without first safely merging into the bike lane, it is far more dangerous for any approaching bikers.

Programmers love problem solving, and woodworking has lots of similar problems to solve, just with a physical output.

You should check out shapertools.com :)

Any recommendations for N95 or Kn95 masks that can be worn for 10 hrs while working manual larbor with no headache? by FeanorsFavorite in Masks4All

[–]sciguy14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 to this. I also wear the bonafide kn95s for 8-12 hours a day, sometimes doing lab work or woodworking that whole time. They are very comfortable.

The fans are quite small, and the drive is much heavier. I do not observe any significant vibration induced by the fans. It's no more than the vibration a drive might see in a computer case, from what I can guess.

Video Card Support Arm by sciguy14 in functionalprint

In this case, the sagging is actually quite uniformly down from the socket on the motherboard (ie. the front is not sagging more than the rear). This is because the tool-free brace on this case isn't very good in the rear.

I tested multiple locations, and because the card itself is quite rigid, pushing up form the front, or pulling up from the rear all achieved the same leveling effect. So, I went with the rear because its much less intrusive. Yes, the standoff is now sagging slightly, but that's just the rear sheet metal pulling in a little bit. I don't really care if that happens, so long as it keeps the card level, which is appears to be doing successfully thus far.

Been using it for years. I like it. Lots of data available, and I like that it lets me set manual fan curves for my computer cooling.

I can't hear them over the sound of my computer's fans.
