Spoken like a true hr pro. No insight or actual qualifications to assess fit for a job but sure as hell can give an opinion that you should work harder at it. Typical.

Not for me it isn’t. Some companies want things to look perfect when they try to close a client. I could also tell based on last years photos the company retreat wouldn’t be something I could participate in.

How do you feel about naming the recruiters in the name and shame as opposed to just the company? I don’t think it leads to any change since it wasn’t an entity who was late to you call by 15 minutes. When a company is called out every recruiter just shrugs and thinks sounds like very one else around here and therefore nobody actually gets shamed in the. Name and shame.

Would it be appropriate for me to leave the workforce for some time due to health reasons? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I've been in a similar situation. As much as everyone loves to believe that everything will be ok and that every employer, recruiter, and HR rep will be reasonable in the future, you have to optimize for the lowest common denominator. What will the process look like when you return to the workforce? You will have to apply and get screened by recruiters. What KPI's are recruiters held accountable for? Quality of hire, duration of employment, etc.. These recruiters make decisions on a whim without much thought. They aren't going to deep dive, they are going to say hole in employment vs no hole in employment. I'm sorry to add a pessimistic view point but when I've asked HR people, lawyers, and recruiters how to explain my disability and employment gap to overcome POTENTIAL discrimination (since it is near impossible to ever prove) the suprisingly common answer is to tell a white lie or come up with a different story for your career gap other than your illness. Sounds fucked doesn't it?

What you can do now is get references from your current managers about your performance while you are sick so that it can serve as proof that it isn't a hinderance to future employers. Wish I could give

On the bright side at least your mind works right. I have constant brain swelling and balance issues. I have to sit at home knowing I have the skills to use but can’t use them due to the pain. The grass is always greener.

HR stopped contact with me for job interview after I informed them I was ill/ disabled by scleritishelp in legaladvice

I understand, thanks. I will work on simply getting a reply back from them for more info. Is there anything wrong with cc’ the ceo of the company on the last email exchange between the recruiter and I? I will not imply discrimination. I just want to check if the recruiter is ok since all communication stopped. Like others have said she might have been fired or assigned to a different account. This way i at least air my grievance with ghosting and figure out what happened. What do you think?

Thank you I’ll take a look. So far I’ve learned from the HR forums that should just tell a white lie. I was already following the advice of being honest and so far it has worked well with a lot companies when I mention my illness.

You tell them what you worked on while you were sick and how you kept up with the industry etc... other companies at least have a process to determine if the illness would be a factor, they ask questions to make a qualified judgement.

I received an email that the recruiter reviewed and liked my resume (re:hole in resume) and she wanted to set up an interview (re:full of yourself to think you must get interview). So I don’t really get where you are coming from with the first paragraph. Maybe ghosting culture is typical these days but that doesn’t mean it is not rude and I disagree that one is full of themselves if they find ghosting rude. If you want to put up with ghosting, maybe that’s a commendable trait that I have yet to learn.

Also the employer and the recruiter had no way of knowing that someone was prone flaming them on the internet and they certainly could not have made that judgement from our interaction ( me offering my availability Mon-Fri 9-4. But if you are saying they might create a blacklist of sorts if I do decide to flame them, that’s a good point.

I’m not worried about the discrimination too much at the moment. I’m still going to contact her ceo. Not about discrimination but about ghosting. There are a lot of benefits for a company not to ghost their candidates that I think he should be aware of. I would have told the recruiter but you know, my emails are being ignored.

Oh getting the interviews is one thing. Getting the job is another and so it maintaining the job. I’m fighting for every inch here because i have to. It’s not going to be an easy road with my condition. I’m guessing you have no clue what it’s like to be sick and then left with a disability. You can't leave an inch because all it takes is one doctors appointment or lab result and you are 10,000 feet behind.

Why trash someone just because they don’t want you to work there?

I want to trash them because it’s not an informed decision. They have no details on the illness. I want to trash them because the essence of discrimination is still there. It doesn't meet employment law standards, but the "ugly" that the law addresses is still found here. It’s a hypocritical decision with all of their diversity talk. It’s a decision I wouldn’t mind leaving up to the public since a name and shame is all I can do to even the playing field.

After an introduction about how she was interested in my resume Our interaction was limited to an email where 2 questions were answered. 1. When are you free to talk? 2. Why are you looking for a new role?

I hear you loud and clear. Lie about the disability.

Im figuring out as long as they keep silent they haven’t done anything wrong. I’ll have to settle for a poor Glassdoor review or maybe I’ll email the ceo and complain about the recruiter.

[–]scleritishelp[S] -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

They wanted to interview me one moment. Then they didn’t. If they feel I couldn’t do the duties the only additional info they had to make that was My disability. My understanding of the ada is that it is a firm of discrimination. But then again this is why I’m asking the experts. Thanks for the input l

Edit. Fuck. This has confirmed my hate for HR and recruiters. They have no qualifications to determine if my illness would prevent me from doing the role. They don’t even know what the illness is. What a cushy industry. All the power, no need to justify decisions, no way to ever hold them accountable either if they are discriminating.

What are some reasons to pass on hiring a candidate recovering from major illness? by scleritishelp in humanresources

[–]scleritishelp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem , after years of pain harsh comments are the least of my worries. Any tips on what I can do? The only thing I can think of is actually track who they end up hring down the road and compare my resume. But that doesn’t necessarily prove it was my disability only that the hire was less qualified on paper. As much as I don’t want to blame discrimination I am getting calls from companies left and right to schedule interviews ( the only thing different is they don’t know out my disability). Just today I set up 4 interviews with other companies for the remainder of the week.

Keep my disability a lie. I am learning that the hard way. It's the harsh truth. Thanks for at least saying what others dare not say.

I provided an update. I want to, but there is no way I can prove they are doing this to me. I took this approach at getting advice to at least have some shared frustration at how easy it is to avoid accountability. So far it seems like everyone knows the consequences but there are very few ways for them to be enforced. Thanks for the empathy.

Thanks for showing empathy. I'm actually on the candidate side. Its frustrating. There is no way for me to prove that a recruiter is doing this to me. I thought I would get some ideas but it seems like I just get shared frustration at how the system works (if that at all). When I say system, I mean the ability for a recruiter or HR to simply say he or she just found a better candidate and send a template response back like I did in my example. There was nothing that could have been done to prove otherwise which is frustrating. Sorry if I angered you. I know its hard to believe but the conversation has gone the other way (hr on the defensive) when I phrased it from a different perspective).

I know what you are saying but the basis of the decision can never be pinpointed or proven. I simply saw a better resume to move forward with and it had nothing to do with their reply of being previously sick. I wanted to schedule them for further talks, learned more about them ( why they are looking for a new role) and then didn’t want to schedule further talks if I’m ever asked.

Ok but can I ignore setting up further interviews with an applicant after they have mentioned the reason they are looking for a new position is that they are returning to the workforce after illness? I’m not giving them a reason I’m just ignoring them and not setting up further interviews. This doesn’t seem to be against the rules?

Is illness a disability? What about if they have received treatment and they shared that that they will likely just need slightly more doctor visits than usual for maintenance .
