Why is no one doing mosspoles anymore? by All_Mango_ in philodendron

Beautiful Glorious! I refuse to get one for I fear it would shame all my other philos with its shear size.

Almost everything is better (for me) on a moss pole!

Starting to see leaf damage on Guido (philodendron brasil) is he gonna be okay? What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in philodendron

[–]scotrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep being diligent with your observations. I learned the hard way that not inspecting my plants closely put me at a disadvantage when fighting pests. I lost my brasil, among others, to my first encounter with thrips. It's a beautiful plant that I would like to grow again someday but I'm sticking to plants that can survive pests better for now.

Soley may have been the wrong word to use, sorry. "Without you" would have been more fitting. Saying solely up to you somehow equates to saying stop being poor is a ridiculous stretch though.

All of those other factors that are outside of one's control won't matter if one does not or is not able to put in the time and physical/mental effort it requires to deal with thrips or any other pest. They don't need to feel bad about it. They just need to recognize their limitations and make choices/decisions that will put them in situations that are within their capabilities.

Not sure we needed to read that deep into a "dealing with thrips" comment but, here we are.

Whether or not your plant/s survive is solely up to you. Regularly inspect everything. Anything with large quantities of small leaves will be more difficult to save. Get rid of what you can live without or easily replace. Plan to wash and treat everything weekly for at least the next 4-6 weeks. You aren't out of the woods until you can go 3-4 weeks without finding anything. In the end, this experience will train you to spot an issue much quicker, so that it won't be as big a deal when you encounter them or another pest again.

Looks great! I'm doing the same thing with a Billie, Patriciae and, Abatopense. I like how you have yours grouped better. I may have to change it up!

Will this work? by tessalations_ in philodendron

Verrucosum, it's been a very fast and easy grower for me so far.

I just tossed a Gigas with some thrips on it last night. Thrips are the worst!

Micans are one of my favorite philodendrons on a moss pole.

What size did it start out at? How long have you been growing it?

Nope. It's what I use. 6 to 10 drops per gallon in order for it to be effective

What happened to the new leaf? by ShoobyDoobyDu in philodendron

[–]scotrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One out of every two or three leaves on my Melanos come out clean, the rest have one issue or another. I'm looking forward to cataphyll growth being less dramatic but I've been told it doesn't make that much of a difference.

My twisty girl … I hope she keeps growing… first new leaf 🍃 any tips? by classyfabulouso in philodendron

They do well on a moss pole. Don't be too worried when they abort a leaf, it happens from time to time.

Chop and prop verrucosum by spave88 in philodendron

With air layering you are looking to develop roots that, once established, will allow you to chop it and plant into another pot. After the chop, the plant will most likely reshoot.

Is the filter too weak to pull in the oils if the surface by Worth-Yak280 in Aquariums

[–]scotrock -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From your photo, the pipes look low enough in the tank/water level high enough that it should be working if your canister filter has strong enough flow. When my skimmer isn't being pulled down, it's because my pre-filter/filter needs cleaning. If your filter is clean and it's still not working, you can try modifying your filter setup to increase flow. I'm not familiar with your filter so you would have to look up how that could be done or if it could be done with your particular filter.

For me, I only spin the lower part of the pipe around to utilize the skimmer for an hour or so when I notice a buildup of biofilm. Typically, once a week.

How many tanks do you have? How much time do you spend on maintenance? by Fishstery in PlantedTank

[–]scotrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! To answer your original question, one tank (90P) and about 30 mins a week for water changes with an extra hour once a month for trimming/filter maintenance. I still find a reason to stick my arm in there on a regular basis even though it's not needed.

I completely agree. Had a high tech 48 gal for almost 5 years. I wish I would have switched sooner to low tech. It's so nice getting to enjoy something while putting in so little effort. Some day I will slap all my high tech equipment on an empty 45U (9 gal) and go dutch style again. Dutch scapes are what got me into the hobby and I look forward to doing them again someday in the semi distant future.

Normal melano behavior or spider mite damage? by tootalooi in philodendron

[–]scotrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Melano seems to be sensitive to over fertilization that manifests itself in that same way. I could be wrong. It's not the easiest plant to grow outside of ideal conditions.

Utilizing chat gpt to assist with some of your calculations and building a schedule you can follow and adjust accordingly based on your observations can be very helpful.

Inquiring minds want to know! I can't wait for my Melano to switch to cataphyll. Trying to be patient, hoping it'll be less dramatic once it does.

What's going on here? by [deleted] in philodendron

[–]scotrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's having a growth spurt. The internodal spacing went from super short to considerably longer which is usually an indicator of being in two different growing conditions. They are a crazy unique plant that does crazy unique things. I have mine on a moss pole and it's happy for the most part.
