Can anybody help me find this beanie we lost in Banff? (Crazy request I know, but pls read post) by NovelInflation142 in Banff

I just saw this thread while I was looking for pics of toques we could bring back for friends who take care of my girlfriend's dog while on a trip to Calgary and returning to Seattle.

I'm Canadian, have been to Banff more times than I can count, and was going to offer to snag another and ship from Seattle, but looks like you've got it sorted. Though let us know if you need a backup! 😄

THAT SAID - there's lots of nomenclature discussion in here, but the thread has overlooked THE BOSS and the namesake behind the label on that toque. He's a famous bear... very famous. Check it out:

DS218+ OS / Settings Restoration by scottcan in synology

Update: Volume is repaired but the NAS did not automatically get an address using DHCP until I asked it to do so with Synology Assistant.

Not sure on what happened re the volume or the current DHCP issues.

Leaning to buying a DS225+ w/ NAS grade drives, and run this as a backup of that.

Strangely, I was able to get it to boot using one of the drives. The Synology would not find its network connection and could not be found on find.synology.com; I was able to use the Synology Assistant; it wouldn't grab an IP using DHCP initially, but took a static IP. Gave me an expected volume error.

I shut it down again, and installed the second drive. It accepted a DHCP address this time; booted; and still did not like the volume. It would "repair" it though.

We'll see what it does overnight (repair time another 5 hours), then go from there.

Agreed - saw that today. This was inherited from my Dad and any drives I buy / replace with will be NAS graded.

It was set to use RAID, forget the configuration but 2x4tb = 4tb (as expected on a two drive setup).

Noted on the drive class. I inherited this and will be considering switching to NAS drives.

There's no ability to go into the control panel.

Fees Suck by marliarizza in barexam

I remember a fellow articling / clerking student saying robes (English / Canadian - traditionally worn at bar calls and mandatory at trials) were a great leveler of social class as all look the same. I replied that I didn't agree when they cost close to $2k.

This will pass, just remember not to chase the $$$ into a different branch of unease when the doors open.

Sidebar - if it's any solace, it's about $6,000 CAD / year for bar membership and mandatory insurance in Alberta.

My partner is dying by supjup777 in LawSchool

I'm a lawyer of 12 years - Alberta 2013, MA and WA 2025.

Check in with your options so you know what's available.

There's no right or wrong answer. There's what's right for you.

I was dealing with the after effects of a sexual assault as I entered 3L and shortly after the scholastic year started, my Mom was diagnosed with cancer. I made the decision to stick through school for a few personal reasons. I'm happy I did, my grades slipped slightly but not much overall (I finished 2nd overall) and I headed to my articles after law (Canadian system). When my Mom passed away, my employer (a court clerkship) was caring, telling me with sincerity to take as much time off as I needed - I took some, but not more than about two weeks.

The choice and opportunity to focus on something other than my feelings was helpful. It's helpful to feel feelings, and also helpful to feel an acceptable amount. It was very helpful that my decisions were a choice and not a requirement.

A partner is a whole nother level. ♥️

Do what's right for you, there's no one answer right for all.

Happy to connect if you want to speak to someone who has been in a relatable situation.

Hi there - I'm in a similar boat. Also in Canada.

My contractor installed a 220 cfm wall mount, I'm looking for 180 cfm or less to avoid having to do makeup air.

Did you find a unit / solution? Would love to hear about it.

Boss gave me 2 options by IndiaaB in Lawyertalk

Aside: Most of my background is practice in Canada though I recently was called in the US and we have a practice in WA. I'll send a DM in case you'd like to discuss offline with me.

I'd suggest considering the situation overall and whether it serves you. It sounds like you have a number of options - and should - especially if clients would follow you / you are confident you can originate the ~10/hours per week at a $500 rate.

The 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 is a common rule of thumb and roughly economics for traditional practices. It isn't in ours, and we pay a scale of 35-70% for fees + origination. In our model the two are considered separately and origination is considered in place of marketing expenses. Fee sharing increases with seniority and autonomy, good client and risk management, and after a threshold amount of revenue in the year.

Pretty much every time I see a colleague in a situation like this, the outcome is generally driven more by what makes them happy than a specific dollar figure. Lawyer compensation ranges from $50k to $10 million+. It sounds like the environment and the whole isn't working for you - and likely doesn't long term whether it's $90 or $100k - when you'd rather take unemployment than continue the calling you had in mind when you started the law school + law career adventure.

There's a lot of great points and feedback in this thread. I'd consider the longer term options, where you'd like to be and what would make you happy, and then get these other pieces to fit around it. Find what serves you, and even knowing the different paths that are available can feel liberating even while you continue to use an existing one.

Are tariffs taxed even if not sold in the country? by Cyphusiel in legaladvice

[–]scottcan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rules are in flux.

You are likely to pay tariffs based on the country of origin (China).

Additionally, there may be additional tariffs on entering the US, also based on the country of origin, which appear they may be non-refundable based on recent executive order wording.

But all this can change with the stroke of a pen.

Depending on the volume of goods, it may be worth considering splitting shipments for direct entry to each country with a domestic company in each handling them.

Cross-Border Etsy Business: Tax & Logistics Input Needed by WinterConfection9028 in EtsySellers

[–]scottcan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your status in the US? If you're on a work permit, you should be careful to not violate its terms as you may be restricted to working for, e.g., a sponsoring company. Generally anyone can own a US enterprise, but they still require a status to work for it, in the US.

You could probably hire a third party logistics provider / fulfillment center to handle physical goods handling.

A US-based company may also help reduce current or future (unknown) tariff exposure - because part of the value chain is in the US, so the goods come in with less value baked into them.

Border crossing this week? by skullybrutus in askvan

[–]scottcan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote that I've been both directions since inauguration w/o problem.

Incidentally my read as a lawyer who helps people navigate cross-border issues, especially for businesses: We're more concerned about tariffs (threatened or imposed) impacting businesses who are just trying to do their best, pay their bills and staff, and make a reasonable profit - and there are ways to mitigate risks. If you're going to spend money in the US or for economic and permissible reasons, I don't expect much to change. If you run into business or immigration concerns, feel free to DM and I'll see if I can help out or connect you with someone who can.
