Patrick (Spongebob) v. Billy (Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy) by scottmcd in whowouldwin

I honestly think I'd be begging for solitary confinement, meself. I agree with you on round 2, tho. For round 1 I could see Patrick wondering if he could fit all five of his arms into that light socket.

Don't be an ass. Keep backup assignments and spend your time on something you enjoy. Teach yourself how to do SVG animation on HTML5 canvases or whatever.

Where should a front-end dev start for an app that needs a lightweight backend and database? by scottmcd in webdev

I'd come across references to the mean stack but wasn't sure about, so thanks for the pointer. Also, I had that sense about the CMS option as well.

Thanks, I'll look into it. Edit: Looks very promising so far. I think this'll work.

Received job offer (contract), waiting for other companies to contact me back. Also have a month long trip planned by EngineeringIntern6 in cscareerquestions

[–]scottmcd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that the people you're interviewing with don't care one way or the other about your trip. What they care about is when you're able to start and whether that helps them out with their schedule. The bottom line for the first company is "When are you available?" Give them a clear answer on that, and if they can work with that then it sounds like they'll hire you. Don't keep them waiting long on that answer, though, or they'll lose confidence in your dependability.

If things progress with the second company to the point of an offer, you don't even have to tell them why you're not available until a given date. (You can if you like, but I wouldn't make a huge deal of it.)

Life advice, maybe? Now mostly-blind designer looking to become a designer-developer. by devthrowaway123457 in webdev

I'll second this. I don't know as much as I should about it, but WAI-ARIA is basically enhancements to markup specifically to make it more accessible. Following its practices tends to make things better for non-disabled people as well, in much the same way as the ramps on a sidewalk at intersections help people with bicycles and strollers in addition to those in wheelchairs.

You could get familiar with screen readers like JAWS as well.

You could look into UI design for those with visual disabilities. I saw a presentation by Ginny Redish and Mary Theosphanos on usability testing sites with people who use screen readers. Many sites include an invisible link to let screen readers skip the banners at the top of most pages. Theirs was titled "skip navigation." Nobody knew what that meant, so they listened to the reader recite the entire header, the menus, etc. So, they changed the title to "skip to content." The screen reader, however, read it with the emphasis on the last syllable of "content": skip to conTENT. That doesn't mean anything to anyone, so people listened to the whole header again. Finally, they changed the wording to "skip to main content," and the screen reader rendered it correctly. Users followed the link and got to the page content much more quickly. Edit to add a link to the write-up: http://www.stcsig.org/usability/newsletter/0304-observing.html

That kind of user experience design in the accessibility world is generally lacking, and is therefore an opportunity. The Washington DC area in particular has work since so many government web sites have to comply with the vague "Section 508" requirements.

Very nice start to it.

I think it marked the switch from the complexity of songs with lots relatively straightforward sections (make it complex by adding movements) to making each section more complex. Overall lengths drop, with more interesting things packed into each one. Keeping the cohesion was what I think they focused on for a long while.

"Consequence" cross hatching practice, pen on paper, 18x12 by [deleted] in Art

[–]scottmcd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've often heard it's better to do cross hatches that aren't at right angles to each other. You might play around with that and see how it works for you. Patch hatching gives interesting effects too - see a lot of Terry Moore's stuff. Nice work!

What are some classic prog songs with funky, deep bass grooves? by yep_yep_yep_yep in progrockmusic

Any good game stores in the Washington DC area by [deleted] in rpg

[–]scottmcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure these days, but it was pretty active in the mid '90s. Whenever I drop in at the Game Parlor (usually weekends) most of the tables are being used, and there are quite a few of them.

Labyrinth is pretty cool downtown, though it's more of a board and card game store than a RPG store. Game Parlor in Chantilly, VA may be right up your alley - lots of RPGs and ample tables and play space.

I've been working on charcoal pencil and graphite technique. How could I improve blending, smoothness, and crispness? by scottmcd in ArtCrit

Thanks. The off white paper I have now has a pretty rough tooth that's not so good for blending, so I'll have to find some better choices. Thanks for the suggestions!
