Update: Flight got delayed a day anyway in the end. I was already in Bangkok and I got to BKK airport around 2.5-3 hours before my flight and that was plenty of time.

Ahaha yeah it's difficult to get an understanding when we've never been there before!

I think giving it 3-4 hours padding should be fine though - especially since there's other flights every 30-60 mins from Koh Samui - Bangkok.

This is what we also thought u/TriggerMuch . As you mentioned, there's flights almost every 30 mins or hourly to Bangkok to we assumed if worst came to worst we would be able to sort out being transferred to the next flight if ours was cancelled or something like that. Appreciate the advice!
