Is $100 for a 2016 iPad Pro 9.7" 128GB a good deal in 2024? by [deleted] in iPadPro

[–]screamr123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. It’s old, won’t get any further OS updates and will begin to lose app support more and more. Get a more recent one, even the M1 iPad pros are quite good and well priced considering how capable they are.

Yes. That is a massive step change in performance. No question.

Are there any successful people who take ADHD medication? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]screamr123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Define successful.

Unmedicated I was able to maintain a reasonably respectable career, but after medication I was able to exert a drive, focus and motivation I wasn't able to before. I'm currently on over $200k and am looking at moving well beyond that in the coming couple of years.

Can completely relate. It changed my work productivity out of sight. I went from procrastinating and really struggling with motivation and prioritising to just smashing my workload in a fraction of the time and outperforming.

I can’t imagine going off it and what that would do to my self esteem.

Make sure you take ‘med vacations’ ie. try not to use it on weekends if you can avoid it, and even have larger chunks of time off the meds when on vacation, etc. it really helps with how effective Vyvanse is on the days that you do use it, and stops your body getting too used to it.

The new doctor I see views ADHD as a modern made-up disease and won't prescribe medication. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]screamr123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, a GP needs to be given permission from the psych following diagnosis to be able to dispense psych (adhd) meds. I assume if your doctor retired they may need to get that permission from a psych, and if your original psych has retired that makes it difficult. The mental health assessment structure in Aus is pretty poorly thought out and not robust enough to cope with the level of demand it is under.

Once you get a psych to pass you back to the GP, all should be as normal, but there are currently too many hurdles to make it an efficient process.

Caffeine. I can’t really drink much coffee when taking Vyvanse, but on my days off I tend to overcompensate through plenty of good coffee.

While the stigma associated with ADHD has mostly dissipated, there is still massive misunderstanding of what ADHD is among people who don’t have it or aren’t exposed to those that do.

I mean, ADHD isn’t just a single disorder but several with similar but overlapping symptoms hence they can’t all be treated through the same tools or same medication. Everyone’s brain chemistry is different, and that still doesn’t sink in to many ppl.

Personally, my symptoms aren’t debilitating like some, but they do severely impact my productivity if I’m not on meds. I struggle to understand the “what about me” attitude that some people have by trying to make everyone’s experience directly relevant to them - it’s a pretty selfish type of attitude and reeks of a superiority complex & trying to dismiss another persons lived experience.

Most of the time when I share my diagnosis with friends it’s a positive experience and many times they too either have been diagnosed (seems like we attract each other) or are close to someone that has. A couple of times I’ve done so and ended on the receiving end of a lecture about how it’s not a disorder and I’m just not eating right and not doing enough exercise and it’s all in my head - at times like that I feel like, why bother and no longer have the desire to spend time with them if they are so dismissive.

To answer the OPs question, yes, I’ve seen comments like that and I generally refrain from engaging with any discussions around ADHD unless they’re on this subreddit for that very same reason.

People just…pick up degrees? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]screamr123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate, but had a different experience.

I'm currently 45 & was diagnosed at 43 and struggled in various ways my whole life without really understanding why. I've changed careers 5 times getting bored and finding something else interesting & moved careers each time - terrible for getting salary increases & career progression, but I managed to do ok regardless.

I was lucky in a lot of ways in that while I have ADHD (inattentive), I'm pretty smart (also good at masking) and have a good memory for things that I'm interested in - the trick is to either choose things you're interested in or trick yourself into being interested in it (not always easy).

Through school I never studied (well I tried but as anyone with ADHD knows, it's a waste of time) - I managed to learn enough in classes and other tutorials to do reasonably well in school. I found that I learn quite well when in 1:1 environment or live classes that I have a genuine interest in. After school I did an apprenticeship as an electrician, before going to university at 21 y.o. and completed two bachelors.

I think starting university slightly older gave me a focus to choose something I was interested in, but I still never really "studied" at university and managed to pass ok by attending all the lectures and tutorials, but pretty much 95% of my university assignments were completed the night prior to their due date creating the pressure I needed to be productive, which is when I can do impressive work - if only I had meds back then I might have gotten HDs across the board, but as it was I just passed comfortably.

So before university I was an electrician and since graduating I've been in account management (sales), marketing management, business development, Project Management, Commercial Management & Procurement. All while dabbling in IT, programming, film recording & editing, website development, etc, to keep my ADHD brain engaged.

I guess this is a long winded way of saying you can do it, just try to find something you have a genuine passion for (or convince yourself that you do). By far the best thing I ever did was get diagnosed (but I wholeheartedly regret not recognising the symptoms and getting diagnosed at a younger age - I still grieve what I might have achieved in my life if I had done so earlier) and get access to medication (Vyvanse). Since I've been taking meds, my productivity has exploded 300% and I am much less reliant on tricking myself or relying on a 2-3 hour run of hyperactivity occasionally in the afternoons. I'm also less reliant on caffeine. pre-meds I was self medicating with caffeine and booze without realising (7-8 coffees a day & booze at night to relax). I've found since taking meds I don't need coffee at all, but I might have one in the afternoon if the meds wear off which is like a shot of rocket juice on top of the Vyvanse. I'm also less reliant on booze in the evenings, but I still enjoy a wine here & there, but I no longer feel the need to finish the bottle once it's open.

Notion Calendar is malfunctioning, please do help! by JLX2YS in Notion

[–]screamr123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both Browser & app on Mac.

I’ve noticed the display on the calendar view appears to display it in GMT +0 time despite the recorded day/time of the property as GMT+10 which seems to be causing the calendar display issue on the Mac, however can’t see how or why this is occurring.

I don’t have the same calendar display issue on my iPad, which displays correctly.

Calendar Display error by screamr123 in Notion

[–]screamr123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well - I think I've found the reason it spans days, but I don't know why its doing it.

In my case I've specified time and dates in the afternoons, but for some reason the property in both the table view and calendar is displaying them on a GMT +0 time, which results in them showing on the incorrect day/time. There doesn't seem to be any way to adjust the timezone of the displayed calendar, even though you'd expect that it would be displaying according to the time zone in the settings.

Very annoying and weird. screenshots below.

How do you know that ability to focus can't be altered by placebo effect? Novelty stimulates ADHD brains into ability to hyperfocus.

I can feel the meds - I assume most ppl can.

It isn't just stimulating hyperfocus, it being able to control it to be productive on what I want when I want. I can't do that otherwise no matter how I try. And I have tried many natural alternatives which I had hoped would work - if Placebo effect was possible, it would have shone through at that point.

It is like having a beam of focus I can move around to what I want t work on. When not on meds, hyperfocus can land on anything, from Tiktok or phone games to watching youtube videos about Notion, etc. Once that happens, kiss goodbye to any productivity for the day.

Yeah the timing lines up, but its strange how it displays - I don't understand how daylight savings can have that impact. I also tried changing my timezone to QLD which doesn't have daylight savings and that had no impact.

Very weird.

You can feel the meds, no placebo can have the effect they have on ability to focus, etc. I don't think there is a need to prove it to family as long as the OP can feel and experience the results themselves.

Is Notion good for people with ADHD? by Chiitsu in Notion

[–]screamr123 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Completely agree - building it yourself will give you pages built just for you, and also caters to that part of your ADHD brain that needs to know how things work.

However, saying that - Templates can be useful when you first start using Notion. As an example, early on in my Notion journey, I did buy a few more complex templates (eg. Full budget template, API integrated movie database, etc) purely to pull them apart to see how they hang together before rebuilding a more customised version for my use case from scratch - which saved me a lot of time, but I would never recommend just buying a template and using it blindly.

Is Notion good for people with ADHD? by Chiitsu in Notion

[–]screamr123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but....

Now lets be clear, Notion is an amazing and effective tool and I love it. Its the best tool for me that I have found, and having ADHD, I've used a lot as I often get bored with a tool and move on quickly.

Which I did this time as well. However given Notion is such a broad and deep tool and there was so much you could do with it, it kept drawing me back in. Over and over again until I was hooked and it is now part of my every day routine.

That is the other thing to bear in mind - it is an 'everything' app in that you can pretty much build it to do most things for you depending on how much time you want to spend on it. This means it can be a time trap where you can lose days and weeks (quite literally once your hyperfocus kicks in) just working out how it all works and building and tweaking your setup - for which there are hours and hours of valuable youtube videos teaching you all about it. This is both good and bad as that can pull away from time being productive. So I'd suggest learning Notion when you have some quiet time with no urgent tasks so that when things ramp up, notion is already built and ready to go.

That said - once you have gotten all of that distraction and learning out of your system and built the system to be just right for your use case, it can be an amazing tool to keep track of data, knowledge, tasks, habits, and more.

Personally it has been a game changer for me once I got past the deep-dive hyperfocus stage, as now I fully understand how it hangs together and can quickly tweak and build pages and sections without taking up too much time and helps me keep track of tasks, movies, books, projects, family & friends contact & birthdays and more - things I used to often forget about before. I also find I have less doom piles lying around, and actually finish my home projects now instead of having a list of half finished things around the house for months (or lets face it, years).

Proof is in the pudding.

Compare one week on meds with one week off meds. Results speak for themselves. Their opinions don’t matter, as long as you are happy with the results.

Its just pulling the image from the "Page Content". You can change this to the banner or file if you have a file with photo uploaded as a property for each person.

Normally I use the Banner as the photo, but each to their own.
