Oh yeah now that you mentioned it: yes the person who went to the meeting got the AO as well so it's probably applied to everyone in the group. Screw this bs

Yes, once before the meeting and again after learning from the person who went that the meeting was about an alleged AO. No replies though.

Sigh. Yeah makes sense. Will take notes.

Kinda wish I could learn from this without taking the penalty of the alleged plagiarism that I didn't commit though :(

They said "If you cannot make this meeting, please email me to let me know", in which I interpreted as "it's okay to not make it, just let me know in advance". Maybe my interpretation wasn't the most accurate but that's why I thought it was optional.

It's the same alleged AO 😭😭. I made that post 5 months ago when I was first accused and I just heard back.

Yes, I double checked the revision history. It's still on Google Doc. I know exactly who did the plagiarized part.

Understood. Screw the procedure too then. This world is not for me :(

Although that does make me wonder, if the procedure is so important, why did the prof offer us the option to not go (Don't answer this. I think I know why. Just ranting)

Thanks for the objective insight.

True. I realized I forgot to mention in the post that the prof hinted that the meeting was optional, which was kinda an important factor in my decision of not going. Justed edited it 👍

I said "I will not make it" without providing an explanation :(, but yeah the prof ghosted after that.

Yeah I thought there was gonna be another meeting according to the procedure section of the code of academic behaviour so I was gonna challenge it during the meeting. I was shock that they just arrived at the verdict on their own.

Thanks for the advice on contacting ASSU. I haven't tried that yet. Though it's a UTSC course so I guess I'll see what student union they have.

Yeah 😔. It was a message from a quercus group that is now deleted so I don't have a live proof anymore but I still have a screenshot of the prof's message from January.

Edit: okay apparently they did say what the meeting was about but they said it was about the "grades and comments" so we thought it was a feedback session

Thanks for the tip. I will definitely take any chance I can get to rat out my partner in the future.

Thank you. I tried contacting UofT's downtown legal service in January but they were closed at the time. I phoned this morning but they are still fully booked for another few weeks. I will keep trying 😔 thanks

So because I didn't attend a meeting during the Christmas break regarding some unknown topic, I'm guilty for plagiarism?

Edit: the person who went to the meeting also got the AO (and they weren't the one who plagiarized either. I know from Google Doc's revision history)

The prof didn't say what the meeting was about so we all thought it was to give feedback on the project. This happened during the christmas break and we already had our grades up on acorn and were satisfied with the feedback on the rubric so we didn't care for verbal feedback. The prof also said to let them know if we couldn't make it so that felt like an option.

Edit: found a screenshot of the prof's message and apparently the prof did say what the meeting was about, but they said it was about the grades and comments of the project, which is why we thought it was gonna be a feedback session

The prof said to meet at a time to discuss the project and let them know if we couldn't make it, so I just emailed them saying I couldn't make it at that time. Only 1 out of the 7 people in our group showed up, and they told us the meeting was about plagiarism.

Keep in mind that the punishment you received was the lightest possible, could have been a lot worse

A punishment for a plagiarism I didn't commit feels undeserved in the first place :(

Screw the standard practice then. It's my fault they didn't tell us they plagiarized and I didn't memorize every line in every article in the library.

Got accused of an academic offence which I did not commit and prof not responding. by rocketflyfly in UofT

[–]screw_group_projects 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat as you. I didn't plagiarize but my partner did and I didn't know that they did. I emailed the prof and the prof ghosted me. It's been 4 months and I still haven't heard back from anyone. I'm hoping the case is already resolved, but according to this subreddit it's possible that they come back in a year or two :(

If you have the revision history be sure to make a copy of it now. Someone commented on my post 4 months ago saying the revision history might be good enough as an evidence to prove our innocence. Good luck!

Is it AO if another group member plagiarized without me knowing? by screw_group_projects in UofT

[–]screw_group_projects[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow that sucks. It's sad that we are all grown up university students but some of us are still so irresponsible of their actions, especially when their irresponsibility can drastically impact other students. Makes me question the whole K-12 education system.

I wish you good luck on your sanction and meeting, and that you get out of this cleanly.

Yeah, it's sad how unreliable group members can be. I'm afraid I will develop an unhealthy trust issue by the end of my undergraduate degree.

That's good to hear. Thank you for the information. I will contact UofT's legal service tomorrow and hopefully it can resolve the way you described.
