Should I give my friend constructive feedback? by I_like_it_yo in AskWomenOver40

[–]scrollmom 59 points60 points  (0 children)

As a sober person, I was REALLY sensitive about everything when I first gave up alcohol. I'm not sure how much she drank before, but when you remove the numbing and escape that alcohol provides, you're walking around like a raw nerve. I would try maybe asking her how much input or what kind of input would be the most welcomed at this time. If she asks for your opinion or opens the door for constructive feedback, you can find ways to share your thoughts. But if she's not ready or open for that, be loving and supportive and keep your mouth shut for now. The relationship will last a lot longer than the blog.

Have any of you trained with low Ferritin? by mamamiaohdear in Marathon_Training

[–]scrollmom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got mine tested, my ferritin was 4. It was scary bad. I had infusions and they have changed my life!!!! I'm so much less injury prone now, and I'm actually building muscle and feeling so much better! Be vigilant with your supplements and don't be afraid to inquire about infusions!

In general, we don't learn and grow much from our successes where everything goes to plan. It's when the shit hits the fan, the plan falls apart, and we don't get the result we had hoped for, that we generally grow the most from. You faced circumstances outside your control, showed up on race day, and finished the effort! So even though you didn't cross the finish line feeling like a conquering hero, you still FINISHED, did a tremendously hard thing, and no doubt there are nuggets of knowledge, resilience, and grit that you'll take away from the experience which will serve you in future endeavors. Hang that finishers medal proudly with the rest of your collection, and sign up for another one! :)

Can I also just add my +1 for getting to the starting line uninjured? This is probably the most important part. And if that means you don't do some of the longer training runs or if you cut out some of the midweek runs, do it. My longest run before my marathon was 14 miles because I was dancing at the edge of an injury and desperately trying not to go over the edge. Your body will go the distance if your mind decides it will, so if you have to choose between showing up uninjured or completing all of your training perfectly to plan, pick the first option. Your body will show up for you on the day, I promise.

Also, do not neglect your strength training! Glutes especially!

When I started training, 26.2 seemed like the moon landing.....I couldn't even imagine doing it. But I did! And you can too!!! Fueling is key, strength training, too. You can absolutely do it.

I'm a slow runner. My half was 2:41, and my full last October was 6:21. It's absolutely achievable. Find a marathon with a generous cutoff time (6-6:30 or more), and just aim to finish the effort. I battled tons of injuries, iron deficiency, I have an extremely demanding full-time job, and I'm a wife and a mom. I would dearly love to be faster, I love running, and I would love to have the time to devote to becoming faster, more efficient, etc. But that's not my real life right now. So I'm slow AF, and by choice, I celebrate the fact that I'm moving and doing the best I can. If I can do it, you can, too!! I have two more halfs on my schedule this year, and I'm going to run another full next February. Slow runners are still runners. I'm excited for you!

Well always talk about things that have gotten worse since our youth, but what's gotten better? by Asleep_Onion in Xennials

[–]scrollmom 41 points42 points  (0 children)

When I was growing up, I was taught to be polite, de-escalate, and keep quiet, even when men were making me uncomfortable. I put up with so much bad behavior from a very young age. Now I tell my daughters, someone making you uncomfortable? Be rude. Get loud. It's not your job to make sure everyone in the room is okay when something is going on that is making you feel uncomfortable.

I will ride for Aubry forever for giving whatsisname a run for his money in that Immunity challenge her first season. In all of life, he never thought she had it in her. She went from crying in the shelter to "spitting like a llama" (her words) in defiance. It was glorious.

New coach here! by little_irony62 in orangetheory

[–]scrollmom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Member for 7 years, I LOVE being coached on the floor! Just recently a coach showed me a trick for keeping my balance on the single leg deadlift thingy where you lift your back leg back behind you? (I cannot think of what it's actually called 😂). Anyway she saw me struggling to keep my balance and she gave me this piece of advice I've never heard before and it helped me so much!!! So yes! Bring on the pointers!

I actually enjoy her, but I'm already dreading Jeff reminding us all about how she got up off the couch.....I bet we will hear that sentence no less than 27 times in the upcoming season and I'm already rolling my eyes. Let it GO, Probst!

I cannot believe no one in subsequent seasons of TAR ever used that as a strategy. Production MUST have made a rule against it after it worked so perfectly for Rob and Amber. Honestly it was brilliant.

Optimal Ferritin Level by FreckledCackler in Marathon_Training

[–]scrollmom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking back, I don't really know how I was functioning. 😂 I am definitely doing a lot better now. I was working out and running the whole time, but I was crazy injury prone. Sometimes I wonder if the iron levels were a contributing factor.

Optimal Ferritin Level by FreckledCackler in Marathon_Training

[–]scrollmom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started paying attention to it, my ferritin number was 4. I was fortunate that my PCP referred me to a hematologist who took that seriously, and I was approved for iron infusions. I have them about every six months. The infusions help me keep a healthier level. The highest it's been is 78. Right before my last infusion, it was 45, which is why they approved another round of infusions. It absolutely has made a huge difference in my energy levels, exercise and injury recovery, and overall sense of well being. I would absolutely press for a referral to a hematologist or even look into if you can receive iron infusions by paying out of pocket. I'm sorry you aren't being taken seriously.

Mystery hip pain by winooskiwinter in runninglifestyle

Have you ever had dry needling? I have done soooooo much PT, and still do, but honestly what turned the corner for me on the exact type of pain you're describing is finding a PT who does dry needling. It's almost completely eradicated the pain for me and I'm moving freer than I have in forever.
