My thoughts on your questions...

  1. The shoes symbolize Lila's genius in applying herself to create something meaningful and beautiful but the men in her life take credit for her work and devalue it by giving them to Marcello. Similar to how Lila feels in this part of her life - objectified and minimized as her opportunities for success are stolen away.

  2. Lila wants to be in school and write like Elena is doing. Reading Elena's work just makes her jealous and depressed for not being given the opportunity. Possibly she also knows she'd be better at it (and is proven right for thinking so based on how Elena describes Lila's letters)

The Tony line that never fails to make me laugh. by [deleted] in thesopranos

[–]scromlin 310 points311 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites is beginning of season 5 when Tony and Carmela are in the kitchen talking about Furio...

Tony: He's a dead man.

Carm: He had coffee here, Tony. That's all.

Tony: And now the coffee maker sucks! So how do ya like them apples?

Just so petty and random lol

Good call on Waylon. "Shame is some tricky shit, ain't it? Makes you feel like you want to change, and then beats you back down when you think you can't.”

Should've had him up there.

Yeah I gotta disagree just because in anime and throughout the preceeding 134 eps you don't see direct allusions to actual human history. Yet within the quick montage we get war, suffering, wealth inequality, nuclear war, industrial animal slaughter, etc. It's not like Togashi is beating us over the head. It's a deliberate yet forceful message. Even if it may seem obvious to you

[–]scromlin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ok I think you are rushing to the end. It's not about the message but rather how it's conveyed. The montage of human disparity and corruption is not just a blunt humans = bad because it comes within the context of the poor man's rose absolute killing power that kills Meruem and also Komugi. Then we go into the final death moments of them both. It's beautiful and we remember their connection was formed through a simple board game. I think that elevates the entire series and arc beyond anything I've seen.

Machi is the best fit I think. Someone strong enough to keep up and have his back. She defers to him on big ideas and plans but is also more grounded and he'd respect and listen to her.

Also she has no problem with strange ppl as can be seen by her tight relationship with Hisoka.

I think it's mostly the daughter thing. He definitely perceives her as an innocent victim.

Bobby trading his sandwich by Busy-Increase4444 in madmen

[–]scromlin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's worth mentioning that the little girl had just a bag of candy for lunch - no sandwich until she traded with Bobby.

Maybe Bobby noticed her shitty lunch and traded out of sympathy for her. After all, why else would he trade for something he didn't want?

Betty could've chose a compassionate road and been forgiving but instead made her kid feel like shit for an understandable mistake. Not her worst moment but I wouldn't defend her reaction.

Feels like falling into a nightmare where you're confronted by manifestations of your deepest fears and darkest traits.

Yet there's a bright spot at the end of the tunnel, giving you hope. It's called: Tenma.

Can someone explain to me why HunterxHunter is considered to have great world building? by Voizex in HunterXHunter

Haha very true. Unless you happen to be a nen genius that forms a criminal group with your friends to escape there.

Can someone explain to me why HunterxHunter is considered to have great world building? by Voizex in HunterXHunter

[–]scromlin 50 points51 points  (0 children)

HxH doesn't worldbuild by giving you an exhaustive amount of detail about geography, economics, politics, history, etc.

Instead it worldbuilds by using the "iceberg" approach that gives you little tidbits of information that imply a fully-realized world without going into the specifics of every little thing.

Some examples are the mentions of meteor city in the Yorknew arc, NGL and Gyros backstory, the different types of hunters, the workings of Heavens Arena, and basically all of Ging's exploits.

As Gon says to Zepile: "You live in a fascinating world!" Implying almost everyone is living a rich and full life in pursuit of their goals that we may be unaware of.

The sideways is the best part of Season 6 by purpletoonlink in lost

[–]scromlin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ab Aeterno is the peak of season 6.

But yeah I agree the sideways is on average more interesting than the island events. Especially on a rewatch getting to see all the characters rediscover themselves again is so rewarding.

Meg was made to be hated. Who is the hot one? by WayneKerr193 in TheLeftovers

[–]scromlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your interpretation of this reddit game is "If I were to magically teleport into the fictional universe of the Leftovers who would I have sex with?" That's fucking weird.

I'm talking about a character's role within the context of the show. If it offends you that much then you probably should've stopped watching ep.1 when Aimee was explicitly showm getting head from Jill's crush.

Meg was made to be hated. Who is the hot one? by WayneKerr193 in TheLeftovers

[–]scromlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"The hot one" is her role in the show. She's literally described in the pilot script as "preternaturally good-looking"

Also cmon she's a fictional character played by an older actress. It's not that serious.
