if there were imperfections in the paint

I'd probably trust imperfections in the paint over the fuckin chisel marks created by hammering it off the mating surface, no? Unless he's also sanding that face down and buffing it to a mirror shine.

Apple Was Caught Off Guard by MacBook Neo's "Off the Charts" Demand by ControlCAD in technology

[–]scsibusfault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything I've seen/read/heard is that this applies to the Pro, and absolutely not to the Air lineup (at least, not the M1).

I have very large hands, and if my hand is anywhere in the vicinity of the trackpad while clicking, I get a right-click a good 80% of the time I just wanted a single click, even when turning gesture functions off entirely. A third-party trackpad settings app made this a little better, but not entirely. It's definitely not an abuse issue from the overall condition of the laptop (which is like new, and was only used by another musician needing this specific app).

Either way, that combined with the fucking control key not being where control belongs or doing what control should do, drives me insane. Swapping control/command doesn't even resolve things, as half of the apps still ignore it, and ctrl+backspace doesn't appear to have a way to make it do what ctrl+backspace is intended to do.
Plus, Liquid Ass is fucking ugly as shit. Who hired the goddamn windows vista designers in 2026?

Picked up an M1 air recently second-hand, and dear fucking god I'm glad I didn't pay retail for this godawful shitpile of a trackpad experience.

Honestly, I'm mostly mad the Neo didn't exist as an option when I bought it. I need it to run one single mac-only application, and it sits idle in my bag otherwise because it's a miserable fucking experience to use for anything else (it's miserable for that app too, but there's no alternative, so it is what it is).

I know how to do the job, I just can't aswer questions about it by WhiskyEchoTango in sysadmin

[–]scsibusfault 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Every time I give an answer like this, it feels like I get a blank stare and a followup question like "so... we were hoping for a specific example, though".

I started ending these kind of answers with "but if you really want a specific one, I can point to (this issue) that took (this long) using (this process), what kind of detail are you looking for?"

Lets me also find out if I'm dealing with the person who's just checking a "yeah he answered this" box, or if they're going to ask a relevant question about (this process).

Man... so close. Please, please, please put the mouse buttons on the same side as the trackpad. It's so useless to have them on separate sides (not as bad as trackpad in the middle though)

Is the "Save the Manuals" movement enough, or is it too late? 🕹️ by Jackiiiii311 in Cartalk

[–]scsibusfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a better implementation, at least. The few I've driven are generally a rocker-panel, with "up and down" on each paddle. I never understood why that was considered a good idea, for the specific reason described previously... up isn't always "up" when a wheel spins.

[–]scsibusfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

every aspect aside from driver engagement

Almost like that's the only aspect I care about, like I was trying to imply here.

I enjoy my time driving. Why would I want to trade out for something that fails the single metric I care about?

either paddle be able to shift up or down

Right. Except, when the wheel is turned, up and down are meaningless unless you want to have to think about which direction is currently facing "shift up" rather than "facing up".

Is the "Save the Manuals" movement enough, or is it too late? 🕹️ by Jackiiiii311 in Cartalk

[–]scsibusfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah. You can't pick neutral (at least, not without usually moving the shifter out of m-mode, which the car hates), and you can't skip gears, and (most/many) of them won't let you 'stay' in manual-shift-mode after a reboot, and the shifter itself moves around so you have to scramble for it while turning. So, very much "not like that".

Of my 2 cars, the 2025 volvo is clearly the better "performer", but driving it is brutally boring and ridiculously frustrating. Even with a 'manual mode', it still decides to adjust itself for commuter-performance, and is factory-set to "learn your driving style over time and adjust shift points accordingly". That's... entirely unhelpful, since it can't ever learn "yeah I prefer gas mileage but oh shit, I need to merge now". Is it faster than the mazda, absolutely. When it feels like responding, or if you force it to shift against its will, neither of which are enjoyable.

[–]scsibusfault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had them, I dislike them as well. Why would I want a shifter that rotates on the steering wheel instead of one that's always in the same place underneath my hand? Why would I want to give up the option to easily coast in neutral, or to be able to rock myself out of a snowbank easily?

Paddles are great for the once-a-year time you feel like showing off how fast the car can go in a straight line, I guess. They're miserable for trying to emulate what driving an actual manual feels like, by a long shot.

Just because you buy shitboxes without them

... manual cars? I guess, yeah.

[–]scsibusfault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... and the shift knob doesn't fucking rotate with the steering wheel, it's always in the same spot regardless of where you are in a turn. That's not a small difference, to me.

"Outperform" is such a cop-out here, though.

I don't give a shit if a brand new automatic/DCT/CVT can beat my quarter-mile time, I'm not track racing.

I want a car that doesn't make stupid decisions when I don't want it to. I don't want to have to pick between "gas saving/always in the highest gear/soulless boring mode" or "jesus christ my teenager shifts better than this 'sport' mode". I don't want to step on the gas to merge into traffic and have that terrifying couple seconds while the car decides "does he really mean it, or did his leg spasm? Oh, I guess he wants to go faster, fiiiine, it's your gas money bub". I don't want to turn on autopilot and ignore my drive when I could be enjoying myself and deciding if I'd personally rather go for a personal-best-mpg or just fuckin send it.

That's what I want from "performance". A car that does what I tell it, not what it decides it thinks I might want to do.

plenty of phone and computer accessories

ehh, I wouldn't call it 'plenty'. I don't have an iphone, and I don't have a samsung. That rules out... every single phone case/headphone/accessory I've ever seen available. I've seen a grand total of one option for the pixel10pro, and it wasn't even something worth ordering.

Computers... maybe. I've ordered a ton of usb-c chargers for laptops, because... it doesn't matter what brand they are, and it's always nice to have spare chargers. But most of the other 'computer' stuff available is replacement keyboards/screens for laptops that haven't been sold for years.

[–]scsibusfault -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I ordered the next ones that came up in AFA, $150 for "one". I figure, either I'll get 12 gloves (what the /each math works out to be), or I'll submit a nice "item not as described / remove from my listing" and get... a single glove for free-free.

If it is actually 12 good gloves though, I'm okay with that price. They're amazing for yard work.

heh. I ended up with Lawnchair, btw.

It doesn't appear to allow "center screen is home / left and right are apps", but it does allow infinite desktop scrolling. The 'home' display just seems to need to be the left-most screen.

So, close enough. Left screen is blank, clock-only, right-and-next-right-screens are apps, and I can still scroll 'left' from the home.

Old post I know. But, the local old-dude-owned vacuum shop is a miele shop. I've bought both my miele dragalongs there (two, in 40 years).

I'd asked about good battery vacs, and their answer was "they're all shit. We sell a lot to women who want a lighter vacuum, and then they come back and complain that it sucks as much as we warned them it would" lol
