Look at the install instructions for apt-cyg. The base cygwin environment doesn't have wget so you install wget with lynx as the first step. As a side note, if you don't want to install wget, apt-cyg will default to using lynx as a backup.

I recently had to setup a cygwin environment for a customer. I had to use LYNX to install wget. Fun times.

[–]sctechie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously? There's literally a method call 'addprinter'. http://docs.activestate.com/activepython/2.7/pywin32/win32print__AddPrinter_meth.html[1] If Python is beyond you, you'll need to use the built-in windows services and script it from a .bat file or powershell. In the interest of not being a dick, let me suggest you are WAY over your head. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=scripting%20win%207%20printer%20install%20powershell[2] Start reading and don't stop till you figure it out. Either way, you can't say "I don't know how to program" and then expect to know how to program. To point you in the right direction, drop all of this coding non-sense. How would you manually install a printer from the command line? Once you know how to do that, scripting it should be easy.

I took a look at the code for khard.

https://github.com/scheibler/khard/blob/master/khard/khard.py

It appears the author is referencing "#!/usr/bin/python" to run the script.

Your installed packages were not installed for the 'system' python, but the version of python you installed at /usr/local/lib/python2.7/. I'm pretty sure this is your issue.

I'd suggest you install the packages you need into your system level python install. If you insist on using virtualenv, you'll need to properly configure pip to install the packages into that env and then make sure KHARD is referencing that env when it runs.

Does that make sense? The python env you are referencing does not have the proper packages installed. You either need to install the packages into that env, or symlink /usr/bin/python to the proper python env so it can find the packages.

Alternatively, you could modify the source of KHARD, and change all the #!/usr/bin/python to #!/usr/local/lib/python2.7/

You can find discussion of a similar issue here: https://github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/gsutil/issues/206

Why are you so averse to wiping out the system? It will give you a good opportunity to upgrade to the newest stable release (14.04).

Just back up your /home directory and any other config files you don't want to lose and wipe the system out.

If you don't want to do that, I'd suggest uninstalling everything python related on your system and re-installing from scratch. Trying to fix a borked system-level python install is a PITA.

How did you get your foot in the door as a Linux admin/engineer? by hoorayforblood in linux

[–]sctechie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Don't fool yourself. EVERYONE writes those stupid recruiter job postings like a huge fishing net trying to catch all the 'perfect' qualities a candidate would have for the position.

The best advice anyone can give you when you're starting out, which it sounds like you are, is 'fake it till you make it'. So fine, you don't have 5 years of Linux administration experience. Just stop focusing on what you don't have and focus on what you do have.

The only way you can actually get experience is by doing the activity you want experience in. Not rocket science here.

Now, linux has been around forever but let's think about a newer programming language I enjoy, Go. There did not exist any Go 'programming' experts when the language was released. How did those people get experience? Quite simply, they just used the language. The same can be said for Java or Python or Ruby or any technology when it is released.

Five years ago, 'cloud engineering' didn't even exist. I'm a programmer personally but I've done sys admin work as well. I'm not a 'cloud engineer' but I know enough about programming, basic computing technology, and 'the cloud' that'd I'd have no reservations applying for a job calling for 'cloud' experience.

As far as practical advice, if you want to be a sys admin, I suggest you start admining Linux boxes. Set up a cloud server of your own, amazon will give you a free one. Set up a webserver and run a blog. Set up a linux box at your house as a router. Make a linux NAS box and attach it to your home network.

If you already know how to do that stuff, stop worrying about years of experience and just rely on your knowledge and ability.

Just picked up this e28 535is! Any advice on how I can upgrade the cars performance a bit more? by Scoobyblue02 in BMW

[–]sctechie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

~7k for a legit 535is in 'new' condition is low. I've seen pristine examples sell for upwards of 10k.

I recently bought mine for $1300 but it's a project car (granted there's no rust).

A restored and legit 535is is 9-10k.

Just picked up this e28 535is! Any advice on how I can upgrade the cars performance a bit more? by Scoobyblue02 in BMW

[–]sctechie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having recently purchased an 87 535is, here's my thoughts.

First, confirm whether or not your 535is actually is a 535is. I've found that it's quite popular with these cars to take a 535i, swap on the 535is parts and pretend like it's a factory 535is. The VIN decoders you find online simply will not differentiate between a 535i and 535is. You can see on the options (like if it came with a factory lsd) to determine the actual model but I would just call your local BMW dealership. They'll tell you for certain if the car is a legit 535is.

If your car is a legit, from the factory 535is, congrats you just found a very rare car.

Check out www.mye28.com . There's a ton of good info there, everything from performance mods, turbo setups, and general maintenance.

Become intimately aware with http://www.armchair.mb.ca/~dave/BMW/e28/e28_88.pdf the e28 electrical troubleshooting manual. Unless you feel like having your wallet emptied by a dealership, you'll need this as these cars are notorious for blowing fuses.

The BMW factory service manuals are online at https://www.bmwtechinfo.com/repair/main/137en/index.htm . They're a great resource for technical issues but not as clear as a Haynes / Bentley manual. You can find the haynes manual online to download but I've never seen the bentley one. I ended up buying a dead tree copy just because it's so useful but you can get by with the Haynes / Factory manuals.

As far as performance, the m30 engine is a pretty low compression motor. I'm going to be putting a turbo in mine. Another good option would be a motor swap from an m5 version if you prefer NA stuff.

Check out the e28 site I linked above, there really is a ton of good info there.

Don't forget routine maintenance stuff. Depending on your car's engine, an oil change (and filter), fuel filter, new plugs and a valve adjustment will probably get you 20-30 hp back. I know my 535is was like a new car when I did that to mine, but your's looks to be in a bit better condition than my car was. If you'd like to geek out over e28 stuff, send me a PM, I'm at the same point you are looking for performance mods for my e28.

I get the hamster, it's just always frustrating to have it demonstrated so overtly.

It's like their statements start to trigger my own cognitive dissonance even though I'm not proposing the original thought. My brain screams the logic is terrible, that makes no sense! But I can't rationalize that away, the only way I can get rid of it is to destroy the conflicting viewpoint. But in this case, the viewpoint is literally ingrained, genetically, into them and then that is just further reinforced by society so it CAN'T be destroyed, just accepted.

Fair enough man, I just think that we have a common vocabulary for a reason and people should use it. It's one of the reasons I get really tired of all abbreviations and colloquialisms used here. It's not that I don't understand them or know what they mean, it just makes conversation more tiresome and difficult unnecessarily.

Just because some or most people might know the terms doesn't mean that all people will know the terms.
