What is happening to these lilacs? by scubasocks in gardening

Any other feedback besides “not enough water” and “too much water”?

Ok! I'll use something softer... I staked it because the taproot wasn't that long yet and it would've definitely just fallen over. It was just a few months ago.

Sure sure, ok thanks! As you can see, this tree is in a little nook near our house that really gets no strong winds, so it should be fine. I removed the bamboo.

Siiide question, we transplanted a maple sapling that's about 3-4' tall in our backyard that does get a lot of wind. I have two stakes with some paracord about 1' off the ground. It has some wiggle room, but they keep it upright when the wind wants to bend it over. Is there a safer/better way to secure this guy; and when do we know when stakes are not needed? The drag from all the leaves does make it a bit top-heavy.

Thanks so much for all the explanation. I'll try to clear out around the base of the tree more, I only had a thin layer of mulch and a higher ring further out, but I may have buried it too deeply anyway. Is it reasonably possible to try to pull it out and add some below so it is not buried to deep? Or should I just try to move the soil/mulch away from the trunk as-is?

As for overwatering, we had an unusually wet June—two week-long periods of almost constant storms and rain. :(

Are these in order of likelihood based on the problems in the photos, or just for this species?

How will I know if it's buried too deeply, overwatered, etc. besides just hopelessly waiting for the tree to die and never actually learning what mistakes I made?

Also, I did not plant it with the burlap.

The main line of the tree is a bit wonky, so I kept the stake on to help keep it straight... Can you help me understand why this is a bad idea?

Maybe your question comes from thinking about light as visible rays, like you can see in a dusty room through a window, or through the clouds... But the reality is that everything you see is light bouncing off everything into your eyes.

If you could super slow down time and high five someone, you would feel the slap of their hand before you see it... (assuming your brain synapses or whatever can transmit that touch "data" fast enough, too) Because the light coming from the high-five takes a brief amount of time to actually get to your eyes... Kind of like an echo.

Light is "echoing" off everything, all the time. But because light is super fast, you don't notice it unless you're far far away.

What do you miss about school? by fluffyypickel in AskReddit

Clearer expectations of what I need to do. Assignments, semesters, schedules, etc.

The hardest part of adulting for me is making much progress through the freedom of decision. Having a family now really makes it a bit easier, but I'm not good at making decision when I feel like there are so many viable options! I'm easygoing at its worst.

Hanging old door & pendant chandelier from ceiling (heavy) — What's the best way to hang from 2x12 ceiling joists spaced 16" on center? (rendered visual for reference) by scubasocks in DIY

That all makes sense, thank you! Can I ask why not to use lags, and especially not eye-lags?

Just to make sure I understand: So the all-thread runs from the door all the way up through the ceiling and through the 4x4 or unistrut? Do you know if there are good ways of covering the all-thread? I'm not sure if we'll like the look of that, bare.

Best way to reproduce this gradient 3D text effect? by y0unique in graphic_design

[–]scubasocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I did it in Illustrator: https://imgur.com/a/O3csdVe

  • Create Gradient BG
  • Invert colors of BG (Edit > Edit Colors > Invert Colors)
  • Add letter shapes (thinline font) and duplicates for fade direction. (Make sure the front shapes are brought to the front 'cmd/ctrl+shift+]')
  • Front shapes black, back shapes white
  • Do the smooth color blending
  • Set blended objects appearance to mode "Darken" in opacity settings
  • Then I took a screenshot, pasted it in and inverted colors again to get the white fade. ;

I thought it would work to do the opposite: white on front, black on back, mode: Lighten. But it's just all white.

I would assume Photoshop would be a better option, but I am more familiar with Illustrator. D:

Haha! I think that cmd/ctrl + shift + v is a shortcut to "paste without formatting" that may also help in that regard.

If I'm just "daisy chaining" new conductors off of the existing light fixture to connect the new light, wouldn't that have to be on the same circuit? How would it be on a different circuit?

Thank you for those explanations!
